Now widely acclaimed as one of the world's greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923-2013) remained relatively unsung until he was rediscovered by curators and critics in his early 80s, and his work has been drastically re-evaluated over the last two decades. Leiter's images evoked the flow and rhythm of life on the mid-century streets of New York in luminous colour at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. His complex and impressionistic photographs are as much about evoking an atmosphere as nailing the decisive moment. Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh and moved to New York City in 1946. He pioneered a painterly approach to colour photography starting in the late 1940s and produced covers for fashion magazines such as Esquire and Harper's Bazaar before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication in 2006 of his first monograph, Early Color, inspired an avid 'rediscovery' of Leiter's work by contemporary audiences. His studio in New York's East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation. The Foundation has begun a full-scale survey and organization of his more than 80,000 works, with the aim of compiling the 'complete' archive. This volume contains works discovered through this process, specifically colour slides, never before published or seen by the public. Mariette, célèbre collectionneur d'estampes, révèle dans l'Avertissement au lecteur qu'il traite « De la manière de graver des Anciens et des Modernes dans le premier volume ». Il poursuit : « J'ai consacré tout le second Volume à la représentation des plus belles Pierres Gravées en creux du Cabinet du Roi, qui ayant d'abord été dessinées avec autant de goût que d'intelligence, & ensuite confiées à un burin léger & facile, quoique ferme & précis, ne peuvent manquer de plaire aux Connoisseurs. » Mariette confia à Bouchardon, l'un des meilleurs dessinateurs européens, le soin de dessiner les pierres gravées et il demanda à son ami le Comte de Caylus de les graver. Le premier recueil est constitué d'une histoire des graveurs et de la gravure depuis l'Antiquité et d'une « méchanique de l'art de graver sur pierres ». L'illustration est insérée dans le second volume divisé en 2 parties : « Les sujets », avec commentaire de chaque médaille représentée page par page, et « Les têtes » qui sont groupées par 2 sur une même planche. L'ensemble de l'illustration comprend 3 titres gravés a pleine page, 5 vignettes et 199 planches contenant 259 sujets. L'exemplaire très pur, imprimé sur papier fin de hollande, en maroquin bleu de l'époque est orné des armes du comte Henri de Calenberg chambellan de l'empereur d’Allemagne, général, mestre de camps, seigneur de la chambre de l'électeur de saxe (1685-1772). Celui-ci s'était constitué une splendide bibliothèque d'ouvrages très bien conditionnés, et la plupart en maroquin (Catalogue, Bruxelles, J. Ermens, 1773). Written culture surfaces only by the second half of the fourteenth century, after the foundation of state institutions. This book surveys the earliest extant documents, their issuers, and the motives that triggered the development of documentary culture in Moldavia and Wallachia. By the fifteenth century, Moldavians were already accustomed to the use of charters. In Wallachia, noblemen also appealed to written records, but at that stage mainly in extraordinary circumstances. Women could not inherit land, and noblemen requested princely charters confirming a legal fiction that turned their daughters into sons. After the mid-sixteenth century, Wallachia experiences a steep growth in the number of charters issued. In this period of economic and social upheaval, charters proved an extraordinary means for the protection of landed property. Yet neither principality held secular archives - the storage of documents for later use in private hands suggests an early stage in the development of documentary culture. The match signalled Britain's firm alignment with France against Habsburg Spain and promised well for future relations between the two countries. However, the union between a Protestant king and a Catholic princess was controversial from the start and the marriage celebrations were fraught with tensions. They were further disrupted by the sudden death of James I and an outbreak of the plague, which prevented large-scale public celebrations in London. The British weather also played its part. In fact, unlike other state occasions, the celebrations exposed weaknesses in the display of royal grandeur and national superiority. To a large extent they also failed to hide the tensions in the Stuart-Bourbon alliance. Instead they revealed the conflicting expectations of the two countries, each convinced of its own superiority and intent on furthering its own national interests. Less than two years later Britain was effectively in a state of war against France. In this volume, leading scholars from a variety of disciplines explore for the first time the marriage celebrations of 1625, with a view to uncovering the differences and misunderstandings beneath the outward celebration of union and concord.
