Een beiaard bestaat uit ten minste 23 gegoten bronzen klokken in vaste ophanging, afgestemd in chromatische volgorde (dat wil zeggen, in halve tonen) die men samen harmonisch kan laten klinken. Gewoonlijk bevindt het instrument zich in een toren. Hij werd er getroffen door drie "prachtige" schilderijen van de hand van Henri De Braekeleer. Van Gogh noemde zijn werk "curieus mooi", en de kunstenaar "een fameus kolorist" die "niet bang is voor een franke techniek" en die "rigoureus analyseert - Manet-achtig, althans even oorspronkelijk als Manet". Van Goghs grote belangstelling voor de kunstenaar is tekenend voor de houding van de avant-garde.
