ISBN 9789493039261.‎ ‎Nieuwe kennismaking met een weerbarstig oeuvre In 1872 bezocht Vincent Van Gogh - toen nog een jonge medewerker van de kunsthandel Goupil & Cie - de grote driejaarlijkse zomertentoonstelling in Brussel. Hij werd er getroffen door drie "prachtige" schilderijen van de hand van Henri De Braekeleer. Van Gogh noemde zijn werk "curieus mooi", en de kunstenaar "een fameus kolorist" die "niet bang is voor een franke techniek" en die "rigoureus analyseert - Manet-achtig, althans even oorspronkelijk als Manet". Provenienz: Sammlung GW, nicht bei Lugt.‎ ‎Wie sein jüngerer Bruder Heinrich erhielt Peter Heß ersten Unterricht bei seinem Vater. 1809 besuchte er für kurze Zeit die Münchner Akademie, bevorzugte aber das Studium nach der Natur. Seit 1812 mit königlichen Aufträgen bedacht, galt sein vornehmliches Interesse dem Kriegsgeschehen seiner Zeit. Anläßlich der Feldzüge gegen Napoleon 1813-1815 fertigte er Studien für seine ersten erfolgreichen Schlachtenbilder an. Neben Schlachtendarstellungen war das Landschafts, Genre- und Jagdbild bis ins hohe Alter sein bevorzugtes Thema. 1817, 1825/26 und 1830 hielt sich Heß in Italien auf. Im März 1817 war Heß zu seinem ersten Aufenthalt in Rom eingetroffen. Mit deutschen und österreichischen Künstlerfreunden fertigte er Naturstudien in Rom und seiner Umgebung an.
