1890s HOME FURNISHINGS CATALOG
Bartholomew & Fletcher
London.: Bartholomew & Fletcher. No date. Ca. 1890. Profusely illustrated furniture catalog from the highly regarded London firm established 1843 of Bartholomew & Fletcher; premises at 217 & 219 Tottenham Court Road London W. Paper wraps; 10 ½ x 14 ½ inches; 79 pp. On verso of page one catalog proudly states: "Established upwards of Half-a-Century" thus supporting a circa 1890 date. On page one it is stated "Amongst the following pages will be found illustrated a few examples of Genuine Old Furniture of the Jacobean Queen Anne Early Georgian Chippendale Sheraton Hepplewhite and other periods." "Other Periods" would include Art Nouveau furnishings which are well represented in the catalog. It would appear that chiefly the furnishings illustrated are manufactured by the firm and feature various period styles. Furnishings in the catalog are organized as follows: 1 "Dining Room" with pages on "Chippendale Sheridan and Old English" plus sections on fireplace surrounds and entry hall furnishings; 2 "Drawing Room" including wooden chairs desks bookcases and upholstered "Divan Chairs" tufted sofas etc; 3 Bed Room wardrobes dressing tables washstands chairs bedsteads of iron and wood and a page listing mattresses pillows and bolsters etc. Prices are given for each item. The firm also stresses their expertise in interior decorating and artistic painting. Condition: the paper wraps are loose along the text block with paper loss to the spine and to areas of along the free edge and top and bottom of front and rear covers. Top and bottom of free edge of first 30 pp bumped. More seriously. Pages 9/10 and 11/12 have major paper loss-as if a child clumsily cut out various images to paste into a scrapbook. This Bartholomew & Fletcher catalog comprises an uncommon compendium of late 19th century home furnishings with prices given for almost every item. There is no WorldCat listing for this item. Profusely illustrated the catalog might be considered for a library with particular emphasis on historical interior décor. . Bartholomew & Fletcher. paperback

1920s HOUSE PLANS
Our New Book of Summer Camps and Lodges.
Chicago.: National Plan Service Inc. . No date. Ca. 1925. Oblong illustrated catalog picturing and describing "summer cottages" 11 x 8 inches 16 pp. pictorial paper wrappers. Catalog held together with staples not as issued and REAR COVER is MISSING. Pages are dog-eared and thumbed. Black and white line drawings of the cottages plus floor plans for each model and descriptive text comprise the catalog's format. Most of the cottages lack bathrooms while others lack kitchens or offer combined kitchen/living rooms. The cottages' water supply remains a mystery. A number of cottages provide a built-in garage for the owner's vehicle suggesting the circa 1925 date of publication. Condition is best described as prodigiously used. Interestingly WorldCat provides two listings for the 16 page catalog dating one 1910 and the other 1930. Both belong to Columbia University. Lacking substantiation but acknowledging the presence of a garage for the owner's vehicle the pre-depression date 1925 seemed reasonable. Certainly the florid text does not hint of hard times: "A half hour's motoring will bring you into the fragrant-smelling countryside - the cooling breeze of the water's edge or the pungent health-giving air of the shaded woodland. Build your cottage now!" A 1932 publication put out by National Plan Service Inc. includes similar illustrations for many of the same cottages pictured in this catalog with one major difference--a flush toilet has been attached to the back of the cottages in the later publication. See "Summer Homes and Lodges." Publisher information is not present in this catalog but its correspondences to the 1932 catalog support the National Plan Service Inc. attribution. . [National Plan Service, Inc. (?)] unknown
