1930s HOUSE PLANS
Home Building Booster.
Jefferson City Missouri. No date. Ca. 1939. Booklet black and white illustrations of homes accompanied by floor plans unpaginated 8pp plus covers 12 x 9 1/8 inches pictorial wrappers. Black and white centrefold picturing over two dozen houses including the White House most of which have nothing to do with the booklet's small home emphasis; horizontal crease from having been folded otherwise very good condition. Text on the first page of the booklet states that the houses pictured in the booklet "are divided into two basic groups. The first offers variations of the two-story five room plan.; the second group offers variations of the one story four room house." The booklet provides a list of "tips" when buying a lot: "Neighborhood's status developing deteriorating standing still"; "Freedom from undesirable situation as nearby cemetery"; further bland considerations "Desirability of lot" etc. The publication appears to be a joint effort involving the National Small Homes Demonstration Inc. a non-profit and various advertisers including the Jefferson City Building & Loan Association and the Capital City Building & Loan Association the intention being to develop "low cost home designs without loss of efficiency." Small Homes of Today. COVER TITLE: Key Homes Through Curtis Dealers With Nationally Known Products.
Clinton Iowa. 1933. Thin card portfolio of glossy single sheets 12 x 9 inches picturing in black and white small homes together with floor plans. The plates are numbered 1 through 46 with sheets 34 36 37 38 41 and 42 not present interestingly we have received information from a collector with several copies of this that these sheets are also missing in their copies suggesting that they may not have been issued at all. On the verso of the plates are full page advertisements for nationally known manufacturers American Radiator Clinton Lock Company Glenwood Gas Ranges General Electric etc. whose goods are integral to the "Key Homes" concept that Curtis seeks to advance. Portfolio is toned and spotted with in bottom right corner imprint of a lumber company. The plates are in very good condition. A four page introduction to the plates states that plates 1 thru 4 are one bedroom houses; plates 5 to 24 are two bedroom homes and plates 25 forward are slightly larger and not easily classified. The house plans and illustrations are finely drawn giving a rather refined look to the publication. Plates 31 onward feature advertising for Curtis Companies interior and exterior woodwork. Advertising for other manufacturers is found on verso of plates 1 through 30. Limited research indicates three WorldCat listings for this item but none of the three libraries lists the number of plates in their catalogue descriptions. Definitely an uncommon item; despite its flaws certainly a worthy addition to an architecture library's collection. . unknown

1930s HOUSE PLANS / VACATION HOMES CATALOG
Summer Homes and Lodges.
Chicago.: National Plan Service Inc. 1932. Copiously illustrated catalog 11 x 8 1/2 inches 32 pp. pictorial paper wrappers featuring black and white photographs and line drawings of summer vacation homes of various sizes. The common denominator appears to be the presence of a "screened porch" on virtually all of the "summer homes and lodges" featured in the catalog although "suburban home" might be a more appropriate term for several of those depicted. At the back of the book are four pages illustrated with line drawings of "lodges" more rustic versions of those pictured and described earlier in the catalog with the early listings having up to four bedrooms. Text in the catalog doesn't mince words when it describes the designs as ranging from "the most complete summer lodge to the tiny woodland shack." Catalog overall in very good clean condition some light pencil check marks on selected pages two loose centerfold spreads. An uncommon item; WorldCat lists only two library holdings for the 1932 edition. In an earlier and much shorter iteration of the catalog "Summer Camps and Lodges" with an emphasis on "Lodges" bathrooms were conspicuously absent in floor plans for many of the structures.a deficiency corrected in this edition where a toilet has been appended to the lodge most often at the back adjacent to the kitchen. Rapturous language however continues to hold sway as was the case with the circa 1925 publication: "Why spend the long hot days and sultry sleepless nights in the tiring city when less than an hour's motoring brings you into the cool sweet-smelling air How refreshed you will be." In the earlier catalog the "cool sweet-smelling air" was but a "thirty minute drive." Times have changed with progress evident in the form of toilets and sprawl. . National Plan Service Inc. unknown

Chicago.: Crane Co. 1939. Booklet black and white illustrations 15pp 11 x 8 1/2 inches stiff paper wrappers. Faint soiling to covers and a few interior pages otherwise booklet in good condition. The pamphlet illustrated in black and white describes and pictures fixtures and accessories for bathrooms fixtures for kitchens and laundry plus heating and water systems heaters and softeners. The reader is informed "Probably all your life you have heard the name 'Crane' associated with plumbing equipment of the very highest quality. Crane equipment it is true is used in the better type of home where discriminating owners want the very finest. Yet Crane equipment is not expensive." Light wear to covers soft bump to upper right corner pencil notation on single page mid section loose; otherwise good clean condition. A profusely illustrated booklet featuring doors windows storm sash and screens closets and more manufactured from ponderosa pine. In the Preface "Welcome to Today's Idea House" we are informed the manufacturer conceives "of doors windows and woodwork in terms of what they can DO to help you realize your ambition in the home you are about to build or remodel." In depicting home interiors the booklet captures a great deal more than the extensive variety of door and window designs available for it places these items in the context of room decor. Fashionable post-war interiors are pictured throughout the booklet. However without intending to do so an oxymoron is employed that reveals a serious hazard embedded in the various pine products: "today thanks to modern scientific research wood is better more lasting than ever! For today wood can be impregnated with chemicals to give it greater resistance to decay and change-producing fungi. Such treatment known as toxic preservation adds an extra measure of durability to wood's unequaled beauty endurance utility and economy." On the rear jacket the reader is informed that "More than any other of your possessions your home should express your individuality your tastes your preferences in living." Surely a homeowner with "preferences in living" could not be faulted for giving products enhanced through "toxic preservation" a wide berth. . Ponderosa Pine Woodwork. unknown

Magazine format home design catalog 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches 72 pp. color pictorial stiff card covers featuring black and white photos of numerous homes two or three to a page together with floor plans. The catalog appears to be a compendium or potpourri of house plans that reach back a decade or more in terms of the firm's history. Several photos show 30's-era vehicles in driveways. The focus is decidedly on small homes while "traditional" is a useful term in describing the majority of their offerings. Wear and light creasing to covers light foxing to a few pages at the front and rear but overall good clean condition. "Compact" "Attractive" "Economical" are buzzwords in the catalog descriptions while text on verso of front cover states the firm has "more than 1200 designs from which you may choose." This plan was the centerfold in a house plan catalog published by National Plan Service of Chicago in 1935 although that company's name does not appear on the brochure's centerfold. 1940s KITCHEN DESIGN
Family Planned Kitchens.
Chicago.: Crane Co. No date. Ca. 1940. Booklet black and white illustrations 16pp 11 x 8 1/2 inches pictorial paper wrappers. Very good condition. The booklet clearly addressed to women features ground plans for what Crane terms a "humanized Family Planned Kitchen" emphasizing efficiency. One such plan depicts an arrangement of cabinets and appliances in a space 11½ x 13½ feet. The modest floor area is referred to as "energy conserving." Various sink designs are pictured; these are cunningly titled: the Homemaker; the Kitchen Queen; the Sunnyday etc. Two basic floor plans are suggested the "U-type" or the "L-type" named for the traffic-flow pattern between the dining room and the back door. The rear cover features a full page of accessories; these include a bread box a pan cover drawer a garbage pail with self-lifting lid and other handy items. 1940s LANDSCAPING/GARDEN PLANS Wagstaff C. D.
Your Vigoro Beauty Plans.
Chicago.: Swift and Company. H-2 Revised. No date. Ca. 1940. 2 full color double-sided landscape plans 17 x 24 inches folding as issued to 8 1/2 x 12 with small 7 x 5 1/2 inch booklet and original pictorial envelope. Moderate wear to envelope. Booklet and plans in very good clean condition. The firm of famous golf course designer C.D. Wagstaff designed three "beauty plans" for Vigoro Complete Plant Food circa 1940. The plans are undated but the homes pictured suggest the 30s in design; the plans themselves appear to be quite different from those published after World War II. The three attractive plans folded as issued are printed on two poster-sized sheets. One sheet features on either side Plans One and Two while Plan Three is featured on both sides of the second sheet. The plans depict the various garden designs from directly overhead as well as from an angular overhead perspective and advance in terms of lot size and scale of home. Plan 1 is based on a lot measuring 40 by 125 feet and is drawn to a scale of 1 inch to 10 feet. Plan 2 is based on a lot measuring 60 x 145 feet and Plan 3 is based on a lot 80 x 175 feet. The plant "keys" for the landscaping are based on three different weather zones. A small booklet accompanies the plans entitled "How to Use the Vigoro Beauty Plans"; the Preface is signed by Wagstaff who suggests involving a landscape architect or nurseryman in the planning process. These uncommon "beauty plans" and accompanying booklet are in excellent condition and come with the original envelope. . Swift and Company. unknown

Booklet with photographic full color and duo-tone illustrations of homes accompanied by floor plans 72 pp 11 x 8 1/2 inches green-tone pictorial paper wrappers. Light soiling and wear to covers previous owner's name in ink on front cover; ink "rearrangement" of printed floor plan on p. 17; several illustrations of homes are marked "OK" in pencil; interior in good condition overall. An interesting collection of homes designed to make the most of a sloping home site. There are Daylight Basement models as well as Front to Rear Split Level Models. The lower levels are generally given over to rooms designated "recreation" "hobby" "laundry" "party" or "rumpus room." One home features an open plan dining-living room with a "television corner" tucked between. Two-car garages are featured in many of the homes. Given the width of the homes a number of plans call for the extra wide lots associated with post-war suburban sprawl. Overall an interesting collection of 50s "split-level & hillside" homes. Booklet color and black and white illustrations of homes accompanied by floor plans 64 pp 10 1/4 x 7 inches in color pictorial paper wraps. A few short tears to covers; paper loss to spine; fold to rear cover. Overall good condition with useful insert "Freight Paid Price List" detailing costs. Aladdin's well illustrated catalogue of "Readi-Cut" homes also pictures Aladdin kitchens and ideas for colorful treatments of living rooms bathrooms etc. The statement on the cover of the catalog notes: "This is the 47th annual edition of the Aladdin catalog. It contains the accumulated experiences and knowledge of 47 years designing and manufacturing Aladdin Readi-Cut Houses for American Home Builders." There are a number of interesting photos many in color of home interiors. A two-page spread features photos of 40 year-old Aladdin homes which look brand new; also pictured a street scene in Birmingham England lined with 200 Aladdin homes constructed in 1917 "Austin Village" as World War I factory-worker housing. A loose folded price list shows homes ranging from $2000 the "Honeymoon House" to the pink "Flamingo" at $7300. A fascinating booklet featuring a wide variety of homes together with optional features picture windows kitchen cabinets garages etc. By the 1950s Aladdin was suffering a decline in sales; they ceased operations in the early 1980s. . A Dijon, chez Causse, 1783. (1 feuillet blanc). 3 feuillets. 255 pages. 1 planche gravée hors-texte dépliante. (21x14 Cm). Broché, couverture muette de l'époque. Étiquette de titre collée au dos. Première parution sous le titre de "Nouveaux Mémoires", des travaux de l'Académie de Dijon dont le chimiste Guyton de Morveau fut l'un des membres les plus actifs. Le présent volume contient 4 textes signés de lui: "Recherches pour perfectionner la préparation des couleurs employées dans la Peinture", "Observations sur la congélation de l'acide variolique concentré", "Examen des mines de cuivre, appelées verd de montagne, bleu de montagne, et de ce qui constitue leur différence", et "Observations minéralogiques et chimiques, sur le spat pesant et sur la manière d'en retirer le barote ou terre barotique". On y trouve par ailleurs un important mémoire de Maret intitulé: "Mémoire sur la construction d'un Hôpital, dans lequel on détermine quel est le meilleur moyen à employer pour entretenir dans les Infirmeries un air pur et salubre". Il est illustré d'une planche gravée dépliante reliée à la fin de l'ouvrage. Bel exemplaire très pur, non rogné et non coupé.

Reliure postérieure. L'un des principaux ouvrages de Karl Heinrich von Heinecken. Diplomate et protecteur avisé des arts, il fut aussi le conservateur du cabinet des estampes de Dresde et forma l'une des plus belles collections d'estampes d'Allemagne. L'ouvrage contient également d'importants renseignements sur les premiers livres illustrés. L'illustration se compose de 32 superbes planches gravées sur bois (dont 16 dépliantes) reproduisant diverses estampes, pour la plupart du 15e et 16e siècles. Exemplaire ayant appartenu au médecin bibliophile toulousain Tibulle Desbarreaux-Bernard avec son étiquette imprimée dorée. Notre exemplaire présente également une inscription manuscrite ancienne à la page de titre "Adam V. Bartsch 1717-1818" et le tampon d'un monogramme sur un feuillet de garde. Rares taches et rousseurs. Bon exemplaire.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color lithograph map. Folded. Oblong folio. (35 x 52 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). It shows Sudan and West Africa, Atlas Ocean shores, Sahra Desert, and other parts of Africa. Scale: 1:15.000.000. A very detailed and attractive map. Slightly fading. Otherwise a very good copy. Dated Hegira: 1310 = [Gregorian 1894]. Taken from his attractive atlas titled "Yeni cografya atlasi. [i.e. New Geographical Atlas]". The cartographer, Ali Seref, or Hafiz Ali Seref (or Esref) Pasha (1840-1907) was an Ottoman soldier and mapmaker who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. While in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called the Yeni atlas. Upon his return to Istanbul, he became the chief cartographer at the Matbaa-i Amire Printing Press in Beyazit. Chipping on extremities. Slight foxing. Overall a good copy. Not in OCLC.; Not in TBMM Map Collection.

Ali Seref Pasa or Hafix Ali Esref. He was a soldier, who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. Already in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called 'Yeni atlas'. Upon his return to Istanbul he became a chief cartographer at the Maatbaa-i amire Printing Press in Beyazit, which was the successor of the Muteferrika press from 1727. Among others he translated the large Kiepert map of Anatolia to Ottoman. He died in 1907, leaving his large project of a gigantic map of Anatolia in 100 sheets unfinished. Ali's name is often misunderstood or even listed as two different people: Ali Seref Pasa and Hafiz Ali Esref. Until the surname law adopted on June 21, 1934, Turks did not have surnames. They were born with one first name and were until the adulthood described only as sons or daughters of their parent's names. Later they were given titles such as Effendi (Sir), Bey (Chief) or Hanim (Madam) for higher classes, or they were given names according to their work or class. The names were not inherited by children until 1934, when the surname law was enforced. The map maker Ali received names Seref, the honourable, and Pasa, the dignitary. He was also known as Hafiz, the memorizer of Qur'an and Esref, Proud. So Ali Seref Pasa would have a meaning 'Honourable Dignitary Ali, and Hafiz Ali Esref, Memorizer of Qur'an, Proud Ali. Daruttibaa - Matbaa-I Amire Printing Press: The first press in the Muslim world, called Daruttibaa, was founded in Istanbul by Ibrahim Muteferrika in 1727, with a permission of Sultan Ahmeet III. It was located in Muteferrika's house. The first book was published in 1729 and until 1742 sixteen other works followed. After Muteferrika's death, the press was supressed for printing, as printed books were considered dangerous. In 1796 the press was purchased by the government and moved to Uskudar in Istanbul, and in 1831 finally to Beyazit, where it was renamed to Matbaa-i Amire in 1866. The press was closed in 1901 and was reopened in 1908 under the name 'Âmire' In 1927 the name changed to State Printing House. The press still exists and is known for publishing school and educational books. Extremely rare. Not in OCLC.; Not in TBMM Map Collection.
