A Guide to English and French Furniture of the Eighteenth Century.
Holland Michigan.: Baker Furniture Inc. Sixth Edition. 1943. Booklet black and white photo illustrations 48pp 10 1/2 x 7 inches gilt decorative paper wrappers. A couple of soiled spots to cover; very good clean condition. A statement on the title page printed in a potpourri of fonts describes the illustrated volume as "A New and Unusual Treatise Regarding the Use Manufacture and Care of Choice Reproductions; intended for Pleasure and the Interest of All who enjoy Fine Things." An insert cautions "As most of our production is now devoted to the war effort some of the furniture shown in these pages cannot be obtained. However your dealer has or can obtain for you full information concerning the Baker furniture still available." The volume aims to address the question: "What constitutes a truly fine reproduction" The question is answered in a chapter which describes the firm's owner trolling France and England looking for a unique piece of furniture then employing a master cabinet-maker to create in situ a reproduction that captures every detail of the original. This copy is then shipped to Michigan to serve as a master model for further reproductions. On other occasions however the original is sent direct to Michigan to serve as the master model. Regarding the intricacies of reproduction we are informed of the demands imposed in choosing fine wood in creating a lustrous finish in selecting the finest materials where upholstery is required. A capsule history of English and French furniture styles of the 18th century is next provided and a final chapter provides opaque attributions regarding the provenance of the original pieces used as models for the knock-offs pictured throughout; for example: "The black and gold Regency chair . was copied from a model purchased in High Wycombe England. . The Art of Overstuffed Furniture and Proper Placement.
Portland OR.: Roy Mason for Mayson Overstuffed Inc. 1925. Illustrated catalogue 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches 24 pp. featuring the Overstuffed Line of furniture. Cover illustration depicts an overstuffed sofa in front of a stylishly draped window at least 16 feet tall. Adjacent to the sofa is a banner containing the admonition: "By Your Home You Will Be Judged" i.e. Watch Out! Three holes along spine for convenient placement in a ring binder. Glassine tissue protects first and last page. Page after page both picture and describe the styles in the Mayson overstuffed furniture line for 1925. These are given titles as for example: "Semi-Conservative" "Artistic" "One-Piece Back" and with understatement "Massive." A helpful illustration employing a cutaway overstuffed sofa shows all the features of Mayson construction. Other illustrations depict "mortise and tenon joint" construction of the frame and the "8-way angle" tying of the spring. Chaque numéro de cette collection inventorie l'oeuvre construit d'un des grands ateliers de création architecturale du XXème siècle : Frank LLoyd Wright, Frank O. Gehry, Ricardo Bofill, etc. Le présent n°8 est consacré à Tadao Ando et ses associés, et couvre la période 1972-1987. Les projets sont présentés chronologiquement, au moyen de photographies, vues en plan, dessins et textes en deux langues : anglais et japonais. Quelques photographies sont en couleurs, mais la plupart sont en noir & blanc. Ce parti esthétique est au service du style Ando qui privilégie les jeux de lumière, de ligne, surface, pleins et vides et rapports de taille. En cela, ses projets s'inscrivent pleinement dans le mouvement moderne de l'architecture du XXème siècle. L'oeuvre d'Ando se singularise par la matière béton brut dont les caractéristiques visuelles sont valorisées. Par ailleurs, les bâtiments d'Ando sont toujours pensés dans un rapport conscient et soigné du dedans/dehors.
