One side of the handbill includes an 11 x 6 cm. pictorial inset of a brutally caricatured African American field worker and an emaciated mule rigged to a setup that attempts to pull apart a shoe about the size of the mule captioned "I'se bound to rip dat Cable Screw Wire or bust a flue un dat thousand dollar muel." Wortman 1887-1958 worked as a staff cartoonist for the New York World from 1924-1952 establishing himself as one of the pre-eminent documentors of urban working-class life of the period comparable in quality to John Sloan and William Glackens Guy Pène du Bois actually compared Wortman to the likes of Daumier and Hogarth. The current collection was drawn from Wortman's first two years of published cartoons in the World and comprises a kaleidoscopic view of 1920s Manhattan from high-life to low but with a decided preference and sympathy for the low. A worn copy but a book that is decidedly uncommon in jacket. Quarto 29cm. Gray textured paper boards printed in dark gray on front cover; dustjacket; 46 leaves. Inscribed by the author on front endpaper: "To Cousin Tom Flagler / Denys Wortman" dated Christmas 1929. Volume slightly worn with 1/2" loss at crown of and paper rubbed through at tips of corners and bottom board edges thin cracks to hinges. In the original illustrated dustwrapper heavily rubbed and worn with losses and closed tears but with pictorial portions intact and no loss to titling; Good only. F.T. Kolars hardcover

Letterpress satirical broadside with an anonymous hand-coloured engraving the title and imprint in red 2 woodcut decorated initials and a band of typographic ornaments separating the two columns of text.
Rare and popular Dutch Calvinist satirical poem illustrated at the head with an engraving showing the humble Christ riding a donkey facing the luxuriously dressed pope riding a luxuriously caparisoned horse. The engraving has its own title and text in the foot margin of the plate: “Vergelycking van Christus en de Paus” with a poem in two columns of 5 and 4 lines each line with a rhyming couplet comparing the “Heer” the Lord meaning Jesus with the “Knegt” the servant meaning the Pope who is supposed to serve Christ but acts as though he is higher and is therefore the anti-Christ as noted in the final couplet. The Dutch printer author and engraver Hieronymus Sweerts wrote this poem. The letterpress text below the engraving is a poem in a similar vein also in two columns but reading across rather than down the columns. The left column has 50 numbered lines each with a short biblical text each preceded by the biblical reference presented as Christ telling the reader what he says or does though some in fact come from the Old Testament. The right column presented as the words of the Pope and rhyming with the words of Christ says he does just the opposite. A final unnumbered rhymed couplet printed in red below the 50th say “The reader sees from this sample whether it’s an error that people call the Pope the anti-Christ”. 24 A-E; 25-50 A-C; 12; 6 2 engraved leaves.An extremely rare and marvellous series of satirical dwarf caricatures in its most complete edition. This famous satirical "Theatre of Dwarves" is a wholly engraved book of caricatures of a wide variety of types of men and women: nobelman intellectual official alchemist doctor soldier pilgrim milkmaid etc. all depicted as grotesque dwarves. Dutchmen Spaniards Turks blacks and jews all feel the barbs of the artist's pen and engraver's burin.The present quarto issue seems to be even rarer than the folio issue which has decorative frames printed from separate plates around each print.At least most of the four Amsterdam editions were published in two issues one in folio with decorative borders and one in 4to or possibly sometimes even 8vo without borders. Muller first knew only parts 1 to 3 3695b but later acquired a copy in the 4to issue with all 4 parts and described its part 4 in his supplement 3695d.The four parts were no doubt printed together probably in the 1720s. We have seen a copy of the folio issue with all four parts on this same paper so the two issues were no doubt published simultaneously. In very good condition. A Favourite Poodle Hatching Poultry!! or A present of Feather Breeches from the Sandwich Isles
London: J. Fairburn June 1824. A very bright copy. Handcoloured engraving 240 x 340 mm. mounted. A wonderful and very rare British satirical print from the time of the royal visit to London by King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu in 1824. The print was published in June of the same year: that is at the very moment when enthusiasm for the Hawaiian visitors was at its peak and before their melancholy death from measles in July. Cruikshank depicts three of the Royal party bedecked in feathered outfits which is all the more ironic given that British society was agog at their sophistication 'wearing coats by a London tailor and stays and gowns by a Parisian modiste' Byron Voyage of H.M.S. Blonde. Here each of the three is muttering gibberish no doubt fondly imagined by Cruikshank to be a droll imitation of the Hawaiian language. The joke is made at the expense of the Honourable Frederick Gerald "Poodle" Byng 1784-1871 a close friend of Beau Brummel and a dandy known for his gaming debts. Byng was appointed to escort the Hawaiian party during their unexpected visit to London in 1824. He had light curly hair and was never seen in public without a poodle at his side earning his nickname from Brummel: espying Byng and his poodle in a curricle he is said to have greeted him 'how d'ye do Byng A family vehicle I see'. As the Hawaiian king's other name "Liholiho" was thought to mean "dog of dog" Byng's appointment was considered most diverting to Regency wits. Byng who has adopted a feathered skirt of his own is pictured exclaiming: 'Egad these breeches are a valuable present - I'll turn 'em to account. Dash my Wig if I don't open a concern in opposition to the Steam & hatch Chickens by the Grose in the Natural way I shall then be able to supply your Sandwich Majesties and other Majesties Tables with the Real Poodle Poultry of the finest flavour in the Universe'. A note lying discarded at his feet hints at his taste for gaming. It reads: 'Lost £500 at B-ks's. NB saw them all out started at 5 in ye Morning'. Robeing Royalty a treat for the Sandwichers at the sign of the Hog in Armour
London: S. W. Fores June 16 1824. In fine condition. Etching with original handcolour 235 x 330 mm.; in a recent archival mount. Very rare caricature of the Hawaiian royal family published during their visit to London in 1824. Kamehameha II as the name has since become standardised or Liholiho Iolani as he was also known was the son of the famous Kamehameha the Great and reigned in Hawaii from 1819. From the earliest days of his reign there was enormous change in the traditional ways of life and he is generally seen as having personally begun the unravelling of the kapu system. On 27 November 1823 five years after taking his throne Kamehameha and Queen Kamamalu set sail for London aboard the English whaler L'Aigle. After arriving almost unnoticed news of the Royal visitors quickly spread and they were lavishly entertained and attracted great attention in London helped by the regal bearing of the Queen who was six foot seven inches tall. They visited Westminster Abbey and attended the theatre in Drury Lane where by royal command they occupied the royal box. Tragically everyone in Kamehameha's party came down with measles for which the Hawaiians had no immunity. Queen Kamamalu died in London on 8 July 1824 a heartbroken Kamehameha a few days later. Their bodies were returned to Hawai'i for burial by HMS Blonde whose captain George Byron was a cousin of the poet. Although many contemporary depictions of the visit dwelt on the elegant deportment and sophistication of the Hawaiian entourage there was another side to London's fascination with the Hawaiian royals as this rare caricature attests. On the one hand there were the graceful portraits; on the other a ruthless satire of their adoption of western dress. Both styles of course tend towards caricature but such cartoons are a distinctive part of the rich visual history of their visit and testament to the depth of public fascination with Hawaii and the South Seas. Trimmed quite closely light creasing from original folds a few spots of light foxing otherwise fairly bright and clean. Caricature by Cruikshank originally published in February 1795 by S.W. Spot at upper right corner outside image area and smaller spot at upper right; overall light toning good color to the image. Good condition overall. No. 9 printed at upper right corner so likely from a series of caricatures. An image of a woman with playing cards. The title has overtones of occult prediction: "Heavens! the ten of spades! My mariage is broken!" The ten of spades is associated in Tarot readings with bringing sorrow and pain. "In the nineteenth century Paris like London and Berlin experienced an influx of people who spoke different dialects and languages making communication difficult. In addition only half of the Parisian population could read. What better way to convey ideas than through images Caricature became hugely popular because it bridged both the language and the illiteracy gap better than the written word. Due to technological advances caricature was also well suited to effect a rapid response to topical themes and events of the day. With the invention of lithography just before the turn of the nineteenth century images were drawn directly on the lithography stone rather than given to an engraver. The elimination of this extra step plus the increasingly mechanized printing press resulted in a visual form that could be published quickly."
