Weimar: London und Paris Magazine Monochrome engraved caricature approximately 160mm x 220mm in size n.d. c.1806. Trimmed quite closely light creasing from original folds lightly browned otherwise fairly bright and clean. Caricature by Gillray originally published in February 1806 by H.annah Humphrey this was reproduced by Carl Starcke for the 'London und Paris' magazine which appeared eight times a year in octavo between 1798 and 1815 with each issue consisting of three parts opening with articles from London then Paris and a third satirical part comprising English and French political caricatures See Deuling 'Aesthetics and Politics in the Journal London und Paris 1798-1815' in Oergel Ed 'Re- Writing the Radical - Enlightenment Revolution and Cultural Transfer in 1790s Germany Britain and France' pages 102-118. The caricature shows Charles James Fox wearing the red cap of liberty soaring through the air with Sidmouth under his left wing and Grenville under his right with John Bull clinging to his coat-tails. Caricature depicting the Chancellor riding a money sack on wheels on which are the names of the new taxes New Mall Tax New Tobacco Tax Coffee Tax Tea Tax are written and kicking John Bull in the mouth. Bull exclaims "What the Devil the fellow at- are you going to cram all this Down my Throat Zounds you will choak sic me". The Chancellor replies "Take care John I don't rightly know how to manage my new Hobby it is rather a heavy machine if you don't go out of the road to Bottany Bay or America I can't answer for the consequence." They all were created at someplace called The Surf Club possibly in Florida. Each one is on stiff board measuring 7 3/4" wide x 9 3/4" tall. All but one of them is SIGNED "Zito" All in very good condition. A few are a bit smudged. Zito 1900-1966 was a well-known caricaturist who worked throughout Europe and in Palm Beach Florida. Exhibition March 24 - May 10 1970 at the Whitney Museum New York City and subsequently at the National Collection of Fine Arts Washington DC and national tour. In 1867 Nast painted a series of 33 large canvases on "historical" I.e. recent political themes for public display with musical and narrative accompaniment. They went on display first in New York and then in Boston in 1867 and 1868 to generally favorable reaction.
