‎Pearl Jam and Philosophy‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. The first scholarly discussion on the band <i>Pearl Jam and Philosophy</i> examines both the songs music and lyrics and the activities live performances political commitments of one of the most celebrated and charismatic rock bands of the last 30 years. The book investigates the philosophical aspects of their music at various levels: existential spiritual ethical political metaphysical and aesthetic. This philosophical interpretation is also dependent on the application of textual and poetic analysis: the interdisciplinary volume puts philosophical aspects of the band’s lyrics in close dialogue with 19th- and 20th-century European and American poetry. Through this widespread philosophical examination the book further looks into the band’s immense popularity and commercial success their deeply loyal fanbase and genuine sense of community surrounding their music and the pivotal place the band holds within popular music and contemporary culture. paperback‎

‎Re-storying Mediterranean Worlds: New Narratives from Italian Cultures to Global Citizenship‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. This book invites readers to think of Mediterranean cultures as interconnected worlds seen in light of how they evolve disappear are reborn and perpetually transform. This perspective intends to build bridges between the Northern and Southern coasts of the sea in order to broaden and deepen our understanding of current evolutions in Mediterranean worlds at the cultural literary artistic and geopolitical levels. As Paul Valéry suggested we can consider this plural space from the perspective of the intense cultural economic and human exchanges which have always characterized the <i>Mare Nostrum</i>. We can also consider Mediterranean worlds within an open enactive process deeply exploring their evolution between nature and culture examining the natural environment and the transforming relationships between humans and non-humans. The writers and researchers in <i>Re-storying Mediterranean Worlds</i> call for a dialog between the two coasts in order to connect what has been broken. In this volume they highlight an intercultural and creolized conscience traversing the Mediterranean worlds – including Italian French and Tunisian cultures but also migrations from to and within the region – and transcending any idea of communitarian withdrawal. These essays express the urgent need to shift from an understanding of migration as suffering to the notion that mobility is an unalienable right building foundations for a new idea of global citizenship. paperback‎

‎Realism: Aesthetics Experiments Politics‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. Realism seems to be everywhere both as a trending critical term and as a revitalized aesthetic practice. This volume brings together for the first time three aspects that are pertinent for a proper understanding of realism: its 19th-century aesthetics committed to making reality into an object of serious art; the experiments with and against realism by 20th-century modernist postmodernist or magical realist writing; and the politics of realism especially its ambitions to map the complex realities produced by global capitalism and climate catastrophe. This juxtaposition of aesthetics experiments and politics unsettles the entrenched opposition between realism and experimental literature that tends to ignore the fact that realism by virtue of its commitment to a changing material and social world cannot be but continuously experimenting. The innovative chapters of this book address some of the pressing questions of literary and cultural studies today like the complex relation between historical materialism and new materialisms between science and art or the different aesthetic and political affordances of making systemic analyses against depicting the specificity of the local. Some of the chapters deal with classically realist authors such as George Eliot Émile Zola and Joseph Conrad to gauge the aesthetic radicalism of their diverse realist projects. Others investigate the experimental engagements with realism by authors such as B.S. Johnson J.M. Coetzee or Rachel Cusk. Yet others analyze the politics of realism found in contemporary anglophone novels by writers like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie David Mitchell or Rohinton Mistry. The readings assembled here are a testament to the diversity of literary realisms from the 19th 20th and 21st centuries and to the ongoing controversies surrounding definitions and deployments of “realism.†paperback‎

‎Realism: Aesthetics Experiments Politics‎

‎Hardback. New. Realism is everywhere both as a trending critical term and as a revitalized aesthetic practice. This volume brings together for the first time three aspects that are pertinent for a proper understanding of realism: its origins as a radical 19th-century aesthetic practice committed to making reality into an object of serious art; the challenges to realism taken up by experimental forms of processing reality in 20th-century literature; and the politics of contemporary realism especially its ambitions to map the complex realities produced by global capital. This juxtaposition of origins challenges and politics unsettles the routine division between realism and experimental literature that tends to ignore the fact that realism by virtue of its commitment to a changing material and social world cannot be but continuously experimenting. The innovative chapters of this book deal with classically realist authors such as George Eliot Emile Zola and Joseph Conrad to gauge the original radicalism of their realist projects. The contributions further investigate the experimental engagements with realism by authors such as B.S. Johnson J.M. Coetzee or Rachel Cusk. Finally contributions analyse the politics of realism found in contemporary global novels by writers like Chimamanda Adichie David Mitchell or Rohinton Mistry. While the chapters of the volume have a story to tell about the development and uses of realism from the 19th 20th and 21st centuries the material and the readings assembled here are also testament to the ongoing controversies surrounding definitions and deployments of the genre. hardcover‎

‎Rereading Empathy‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. Over the last few decades and from across a spectrum of centrist political thought a variety of academic disciplines and numerous public intellectuals the claim has been that we need to empathize more with marginalized people as a way to alleviate social inequalities. If we all had more skill with empathy so the claim goes we would all be better citizens. But what does it mean to empathize with others How do we develop this skill And what does it offer that older models of solidarity don’t Why empathy—and why now <i>Rereading Empathy</i> takes up these questions examining the uses to which calls for empathy are put in the face of ever expanding economic and social precarity. ‎Sonic Identity at the Margins‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. <i>Sonic Identity at the Margins</i> convenes the interdisciplinary work of 17 academics composers and performers to examine sonic identity from the 19th century to the present. Recognizing the myriad aspects of identity formation the authors in this volume adopt methodological approaches that range from personal accounts and embodied expression to archival research and hermeneutic interpretation. They examine real and imagined spaces—from video games and monument sites to films and depictions of outer space—by focusing on sonic creation performance and reception. Drawing broadly from artistic and performance disciplines the authors reimagine the roles played by music and sound in constructing notions of identity in a broad array of musical experiences from anti-slavery songsters to Indigenous tunes and soundscapes noise and multimedia to popular music and symphonic works. Exploring relationships between sound and various markers of identity—including race gender ability and nationality—the authors explore challenging timely topics including the legacies of slavery indigeneity immigration and colonial expansion. In heeding recent calls to decolonize music studies and confront its hegemonic methods the authors interrogate privileged perspectives embedded in creating performing and listening to sound as well as the approaches used to analyze these experiences. paperback‎

‎The Cognitive Continuum of Electronic Music‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. The electronic medium allows any audible sound to be contextualized as music. This creates unique structural possibilities as spectrum dynamics space and time become continuous dimensions of musical articulation. What we hear in electronic music ventures beyond what we traditionally characterize as musical sound and challenges our auditory perception on the one hand and our imagination on the other. Based on an extensive listening study conducted over four years this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the cognitive processes involved in the experience of electronic music. It pairs artistic practice with theories from a range of disciplines to communicate how this music operates on perceptual conceptual and affective levels. Looking at the common and divergent ways in which our minds respond to electronic sound it investigates how we build narratives from our experience of electronic music and situate ourselves in them. paperback‎

‎The Emprise of Poetry: Durs Grünbein America Antisemitism and the Pursuit of Liberty‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. <p><b><i>The Emprise of Poetry </i>analyzes </b><b>the insidious entwinement of anti-Americanism and antisemitism in modern and contemporary German culture through the writings of one of its most acclaimed literary figures: Dresden native Durs Grünbein 1962-.</b><br /><br />Michael Eskin offers an unprecedented view of the American-<i>cum</i>-Jewish discontents at the heart of modern and present-day German culture through the exemplary lens of the work of Durs Grünbein the most widely translated and globally honored living German poet and the only one to have been hailed as the Berlin Republic’s “most qualified contemporary candidate for the office of German national poet.â€<br /><br />Yet as Eskin outlines Grünbein’s work contains a paradoxical and tension-filled twofold self-construction: as an idiosyncratically ‘<i>American</i>’ poet and Ezra Pound’s vociferously philosemitic heir who merely happens to be writing in German as it were conjoined with an avidly anti-American <i>German </i>poet who writes emphatically and not always savorily <i>as a German</i> and a self-proclaimed heir to the legacies of Celan and Kafka – most notably on matters American and Jewish. Against the foil of these tensions Eskin traces and documents postwar German high culture’s persisting inability to purge itself of ideological toxins that leach into the mainstream from centuries-old prejudices and antagonisms revolving around Germany’s love-hate bond with America as well as its ostensibly enduring suspicion and antipathy toward Jews.<br /><br /> Eskin’s deep dive into the ‘<i>American</i>’ Grünbein’s apparent philosemitism coupled with the <i>German</i> Grünbein’s antisemitically-inflected anti-Americanism reveals the fault lines underlying the complex and contradictory legacies and contexts of postwar German culture.</p> paperback‎

‎The Presidents of American Fiction: Fashioning the U.S. Political Imagination‎

‎Hardback. New. <i>The Presidents of American Fiction</i> brings together American literature history and political science to explore the most influential fictionalized accounts of the presidency from the early 19th century to the time of Trump. Of late popular understandings of the presidency are being radically re-written—consider for example the distinctive myths that accompanied the ascent of the Obama and Trump administrations—and many readers of all stripes are radically reimagining the office and its holder. Placing these changes within a broader cultural context Michael J. Blouin investigates narratives involving fictional presidents from the supposedly factual to the outright fantastical within their distinct literary and historical moments. The author considers representative texts including works penned by James Fenimore Cooper from the Jacksonian moment Gore Vidal in the age of Nixon and Vietnam and Philip Roth in the neoliberal period. Through detailed readings that question how American presidents function as characters within the popular imagination this book examines the presidency as a complex ever-evolving trope and in so doing enhances our appreciation of American literature’s inextricable link with American politics. hardcover‎

‎The Sounds of Spectators at Football‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. The sounds of spectators at football soccer are often highlighted – by spectators tourists commentators journalists scholars media producers etc. – as crucial for the experience of football. These sounds are often said to contribute significantly to the production at the stadium and conveyance in televised broadcast of ‘atmosphere.’ This book addresses why and how spectator sounds contribute to the experience of watching in these environments and what characterizes spectator sounds in terms of their structure distribution and significance. Based on an examination of empirical materials – including the sounds of football matches from the English Premier League as they emerge both at the stadium and in the televised broadcast – this book systematically dissects the sounds of football watching. paperback‎

‎Theodor Fontane: Irony and Avowal in a Post-Truth Age‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. What happens when fashionable forms of unserious speech prove to be contagious when they adulterate and weaken communicative spheres that rely on honesty trust and sincerity Demonstrating how the tension between irony and avowal constitutes a central conflict in Fontane’s works this book argues that his best-known society novels play out a struggle between the incompatible demands of these two modes of speaking. Read in this light the novels identify an irreconcilable discrepancy between word and deed as both the root of emotional discord and the proximate cause of historical and political upheaval. Given the alarm since 2016 over unreliability falsehood and indifference to truth it is now easier to perceive in Fontane’s novels a profound concern about language that is not sincere and not meant to be taken literally. For Fontane irony exemplifies a discrepancy between language and meaning a loosening of the ethical bond between words and the things to which they refer. His novels investigate the extent to which human relationships can continue to function in the face of pervasive irony and the erosion of language’s credibility. Although Fontane is widely regarded as an ironic writer Tucker’s analyses reveal a critical distance between his works and the prospect of irony as a dominant idiom. Revisiting Fontane’s novels in a post-truth age brings the conflict between irony and avowal into sharper relief and makes legible the stakes and contours of our own post-truth condition. paperback‎

His novels investigate the extent to which human relationships can continue to function in the face of pervasive irony and the erosion of language's credibility. Although Fontane is widely regarded as an ironic writer Tucker's analyses reveal a critical distance between his works and the prospect of irony as a dominant idiom. Revisiting Fontane's novels in a post-truth age brings the conflict between irony and avowal into sharper relief and makes legible the stakes and contours of our own post-truth condition. hardcover‎

‎Truth and Metafiction: Plasticity and Renewal in American Narrative‎

‎Hardback. New. Metafiction has long been associated with the heyday of literary postmodernism—with a certain sense of irresponsibility political apathy or outright nihilism. Yet if as is now widely assumed postmodernism has finally run its course how might we account for the proliferation of metafictional devices in contemporary narrative media Does this persistence undermine the claim that postmodernism has passed or has the function of metafiction somehow changed To answer these questions Josh Toth considers a broad range of recent metafictional texts—bywriters such as George Saunders and Jennifer Egan and directors such as Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino. At the same time he traverses a diffuse theoretical landscape: from the rise of various new materialisms in philosophy and the turn to affect in literary criticism to the seemingly endless efforts to name postmodernism’s ostensible successor. Ultimately Toth argues that much contemporary metafiction moves beyond postmodern skepticism to reassert the possibility of making true claims about real things. Capable of combating a “post-truth†crisis such forms assert or assume a kind of Hegelian plasticity; they actively and persistently confront the trauma of what is infinitely mutable or perpetually other. What is outside or before a given representation is confirmed and endured as that which exceeds the instance of its capture. The truth is thereby renewed; neither denied nor simply assumed it is approached as ethically as possible. Its plasticity is <i>grasped</i> because the grasp the form of its narrative apprehension lets slip. hardcover‎

‎Vernaculars in an Age of World Literatures‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. This open access book complicates and develops the notion of the vernacular. Understood in the linguistic sense as well as an element of the local the vernacular facilitates the exploration of local and global dynamics. Through exploring the unexamined active role of the local the indigenous and the periphery in international literary exchanges this volume argues that a coherent theorization of the vernacular will enable us to do so. The essays in <i>Vernaculars in an Age of World Literatures </i>present new critical approaches in the debate on world literature which has given priority to cosmopolitan movements global circulation of literatures and metropolitan centers. In nine case studies approaching narratives from the long 20th century from more or less marginal contexts—such as the Francophone Chinese diaspora multilingual regions in Spain West Africa and the Caribbean—the volume offers theoretical and methodological ways of putting the concept of the vernacular in practice and demonstrates how vernaculars operate within different literary critical cultural and political circumstances. <i>The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. </i> paperback‎
