APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE MINERS' PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION DATED AT CRIPPLE CREEK COLORADO JUNE 30 1915 COMPLETED BY ERNEST GEORGE AHL AGE 19
Colorado 1915. 5-1/2" x 8-3/4". Printed form on pink paper completed in ink manuscript two holes punched at top. Very Good. <br/><br/> Ernest George Ahl age 19 born in Sweden and residing at 214 No. 4 St. Victor lists his occupation as trammer and claims eleven months' experience at Stratton's Independence Mine. He recites that he has never been a member of the Western Federation of Miners or a member of any labor organization. He states that he is "in sympathy with the objects and purposes of the Miners' Protective Association. . . and will abide by and observe the Constitution and By-Laws as may be prescribed by its Executive Committee." He signs the document. On the verso are additional notes regarding his application. <br/> The Stratton Independence Mine & Mill was located in the Cripple Creek Mining District in Victor Colorado on the south slope of Battle Mountain. Named after Winfield Scott Stratton who discovered the mine on July 4 1891 it was site of the first major strike in the Cripple Creek/Victor area. The disputes led to the formation of the Western Federation of Miners in 1893. Tensions between management and workers escalated into the Colorado Labor Wars of 1903. The Miners' Protective Association formed in Virginia City in May 1863 opposed pending wage cuts and created a benefit fund for sick and injured miners and their families. By 1912 it had established an office in Cripple Creek which was made up of both employers and employees. Mining American Volume 65 1912 p.197. <br/> Ernest George Ahl was born in Malmere Shana Sweden on June 28 1896 and died in San Diego California on June 21 1923. Not much is known about him; Swedish emigration records show him leaving for New York on June 11 1914. His Declaration of Naturalization occurred March 1917 at San Diego California; he registered for the World War I draft on June 8 1917 and listed his employer at the time as Portland Gold Mining Company; he is listed in the Roster of Men and Women Who Served in The World War From Colorado 1917-1918 Teller County as a private in the Infantry. unknown books

2 June 1892. On House of Commons letterhead. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Under Gladstone Burt served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade 1892-1895. From the papers of Arthur George Liddon Rogers 1864-1944 son of the editor of the economist Thorold Rogers and written while Rogers was Secretary of the Liberal Publication Department a sort of public relations department a position to which he was appointed in November 1891. 2pp 12mo. On bifolium. Signed 'Thos Burt'. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Begins 'Dear Mr Rogers / I see there were two divisions on the weighing clauses of the mines Act of 1887. The first on an amendment moved by Mr Fenwick to deprive the Home Secretary of the power to exempt any mine from the weighing clauses. The second moved by Mr Donald Proudford to make it imperative that the weight should be by imperial ton. The representatives of the miners in the House supported both and Mr. Herman Hodge voted against both.' He gives a reference to the 'Division List' and ends by stating that his name need not be mentioned 'in connection with this'. 2 June 1892. On House of Commons letterhead. unknown

The first two on House of Commons letterhead; the third on letterhead of the Reform Club Pall Mall; the fourth from Cromer on letterhead of the Board of Trade Whitehall London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Under Gladstone Burt served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade 1892-1895. The four items all addressed to ‘Dear Mr Rogers’ and signed ‘Thos Burt’ are all bifoliums in good condition folded for postage. ONE 2 June 1892: 2pp 12mo. With regard to an LPD publication he regrets that he ‘cannot do the leaflet’. Not only does he have ‘more work on hand than I can get through my having a member of the Royal Commission inquiring into the subject hampers me’. He does not think he could ‘with propriety write publicly on the subject at a time when I am engaged with others in preparing the Report’. TWO 2 February 1893: 4pp 12mo. A ‘rush of correspondence’ has left him without a ‘spare minute’. He is enclosing a letter from one of his constituents ‘in the hope that you may be able to forward him some leaflets bearing upon the points he mentions’. Burt’s own paper ‘on the Mines Reg Act that I wrote for you might be useful and I have no doubt you have something on Free Education and the other questions referred to’. He asks if there is ‘a cheap edition of Mr John Nohle’s book’. He ends with reference to the return of a book and the settling of an account. THREE 11 February 1893. 2pp 12mo. In thanking him for his ‘kind letter & for yr prompt attention to my request’ he is returning a cheque. FOUR 11 October 1893. 4pp 12mo. In a secretarial hand with Burt’s autograph signature. He is ‘away from the Board of Trade until Parliament re-assembles’ and is consequently ‘not in a position myself to verify all the facts contained in the enclosed pamphlet’. He believes ‘the facts given are strictly accurate except under the heading Seaman’s Wages’. As ‘chairman of the departmental Comttee that enquired into the subject’ he makes suggestions towards the way ‘the beginning of that paragraph should I think be somewhat modified’. He knows ‘that steps are now being taken to extend the system to foreign posts. If the leaflet is not issued before I return to the B of T I will make further enquiry should you so desire with a view to ensure absolute correctness.’ 2 June 1892; and 2 and 11 February, and 11 October, 1893. Declared unfair and fined: April 15 1915 handbill together with a blank form for filing complaints
Denver CO: the Union 1915. Leaflet 8.5x11 inches stating that J.A. James of the Skidoo Miners Union in California has been declared unfair and fined $25 for not paying dues and "for knocking organized labor." Ed Langdon of the Rossland Miners Union in British Columbia is on the other hand listed as having placed himself back in good standing. Also present is a form not filled out by which a union member could file a complaint to have someone declared unfair. Includes details of physical appearance and residence apparently so that someone could not easily escape by using a pseudonym. Very good. the Union unknown books
