Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's lovely silk-covered boards, sewn with threads in traditional Chinese style, upper board richly illustrated in gilt, and with gilt lettering, bit discoloured, cloth over spine rubbed off, spine heads bit worn. In a very fine internal condition. Excellent interior, exceptionally well preserved, crisp plates. ~ First edition. Copy number 65 (of 66) from the Östasiatiska Museet, Stockholm, with two stamps to that effect. Includes list of dynasties; notes on the history and technique of Chinese drawing and painting; supplement of plates illustrating Chinese bronzes, ceramic art, and jade. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Uncommon in such fine internal condition.

Sm. 4to., Second Edition, with a frontispiece and 98 fine plates [all complete], title very lightly spotted; original pictorial cloth, upper board blocked and lettered in gilt and black, backstrip blocked and lettered in gilt, bevelled boards, red edges, chocolate endpapers, joints lightly rubbed, top and fore-edge faded, upper joint just starting (but binding entirely sound) else a remarkably bright, clean copy. With the two leaves of advertisements at rear (the first for Great Eastern Railway; the second for the publisher's catalogue). Despite the title-page only 99 plates (including the frontispiece) are called for. This glorious photographic depiction of Broadland was first published in 1891; a third edition (apparently rather more common) appeared in 1897. Very scarce, especially in this condition. Darroch & Taylor 334 (recording only the third edition); not in Steward.

Suffling's famous work was first published in Norwich in 1885, with a revised London edition following in 1887. 'The demand for this volume has been so great that it was found necessary that it should undergo revision, so many changes having taken place since it was written' (Author's Preface to present edition). With 24pp catalogue of trade advertisements (a number illustrated) bound in at rear. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Darroch & Taylor 326 (recording the first and second editions).
