Brown cloth boards with blindstamped decorations gilt lettering to spine yellow clay-coated endpapers frontis many in-text illustrations. Spine ends & joints repaired it is now a clean & sturdy copy. This particular copy has the ownership inscription of Joshua Fry Speed. Speed was Abraham Lincoln’s four-year roommate and close lifelong friend. The 2024 documentary film Lover of Men suggests that Lincoln and Speed had a gay relationship. For much of his life Speed was a lawyer in Louisville and from 1848-1850 he was a Representative in the Kentucky House of Representatives. Provenance: From the great-great-grandson of Edward Dorsey Hobbs who was Joshua Speed’s brother-in-law. One of Hobbs’ slaves married one of Speed’s slaves. Hobbs’ grandchild was taught to swim by one of Speed’s freed slaves.</p> Gould and Lincoln hardcover

Light bumping and scuffing to corners and spine ends strong and tight some darkening to the spine panel gilt bright hinges strong; internally clean and fresh coated yellow endpapers old ink ownership to title pages illustrated throughout. A very good solid copy.<br /> <br /> A crusading geologist and scientific thinker who suffered somewhat from his belief that the fossil and geological record bore out and confirmed the biblical account of the creation of Earth and that man was essentially separate from evolutionary theory and should be scientifically held separate from the lower animals. An uneasy man Miller committed suicide during the final release of this his last work. Gould and Lincoln unknown

The testimony of the rocks; or geology in its bearings on the two theologies natural and revealed. 8vo. xi 1 500pp. Original photographic frontispiece portrait of the author by J. G. Tunney text wood-engravings. Edinburgh: Shepherd & Elliot 1857. 197 x 122 mm. Original cloth worn hinges tender foot of spine repaired. Light browning but very good.</p> <p> First Edition and rare with the portrait which is found in only a few copies. Miller's book was the first to include a photograph of its author; the portrait shows the bearded and extremely hirsute Miller seated at a table reading. Miller a Scottish amateur geologist and popularizer of science believed that "the fossil record confirmed in broad outline the cosmic drama depicted symbolically in the Bible" DSB; he opposed evolutionary theory and argued vehemently for man's separation from the lower animals.
