A small stamp to verso of titlepage. � First printing of probably the first work to discover and correct for the errors of the compass caused by the iron in ships by the first circumnavigator of Australia.<br><br>"Captain Matthew Flinders RN 16 March 1774 - 19 July 1814 was one of the most successful navigators and cartographers of his age. In a career that spanned just over twenty years he sailed with Captain William Bligh circumnavigated Australia and encouraged the use of that name for the continent which had previously been known as New Holland. He survived shipwreck and disaster only to be imprisoned for violating the terms of his scientific passport by changing ships and carrying prohibited papers. In 4to, mm. 1675x235, 1 carta bianca, con ex libris e nota manoscritta di vecchio proprietario + 12 carte non numerate + 551 pagine + 1 carta bianca finale. Written for the use of junior officers of the Royal Engineers and those of the Honourable East India Company's Service, Frome's extensive treatise was first published from REE Chatham in 1839. Its value as a standard text was swiftly recognised in both military and civilian sectors and the third edition was exhausted by 1862. This is the fourth (first Warren) edition, considerably expanded as well as revised. A lovely copy.

Single sheet folded into 9 panels colour maps 38 x 53cm small tears to the edges little holes along folds not affecting text text largely in Chinese with the map titles some tourist sites and hotels also provided in English. One side of sheet includes: a brief introduction to the historical city of Lanzhou capital of Gansu Province pictures detailed maps of scenic attractions and their brief overviews. The author in his preface discusses how the first edition was for surveyors in India in the 1830s who were operating under less than ideal conditions and that this new edition has been revised and reset. "Gibson's Surveying was a dominant American text for a half century, and the standard against which others were compared. It appeared on the American scene when there was a need for what it offered, particularly in regard to calculating land areas from metes and bounds surveys. Despite several additions and changes by American editors, it never included descriptions or instructions on newer instruments such as the vernier compass, solar compass, or surveyors transit. Its heyday came and went, and it nobly served the needs of many pioneer American surveyors. In 8 (cm 14,5 x 23), pp. 47 + (1b) con 1 tavola ripiegata in fine incisa all'acquaforte raff. la bilancia idrostatica. Fitte annotazioni manoscritte con grafia coeva nella parte superiore del contropiatto anteriore. Brossura muta coeva. "Questo libretto, come l'autore confessa, e' in gran parte fabbricato sulla teoria del sig. Fabbroni nel suo scritto intorno alle stime dei terreni. Comunque il mezzo piu' eccellente per misurare le superficie sia il goniometro munito di micrometro, il sig. Rensi per la pratica universale dei periti consiglia la Tavola pretoriana. Non approva pero' l'uso dell'ago magnetico per orientarla, ma invece vorrebbe s'adoperasse il cosi' detto punto sovrapposto... Misurata l'estensione orizzontale, conviene esaminare la profondita' del terreno adoperando percio' la trivella gallica, e consiglia il nostro autore di limitarsi in questa indagine al punto dal quale per la sua profondita' piu' non tornasse conto l'estraerla, a meno di una spesa esorbitante non ordinaria" (Biblioteca italiana ossia giornale di letteratura, scienze ed arti, p. 401 e ss.).
