Alaska Fishing and Development Company Letters
Very Good. A collection of letters from the vice president of the Alaska Fishing and Development Company written to his endearing wife. This collection includes 38 letters from Clair Cook C. E. Cook to his wife Ella Cook plus 6 letters addressed to "Ella" or "Sister" from various family members. Letters are on sheets measuring 6" x 9 ¼" or 8" x 10"; two letters are typed the rest are ALS. All are dated between 1904 and 1905. 16 on Alaska Fishing and Development Company letterhead; 18 on Hotel Donnelly Tacoma Washington letterhead; 1 on American Fish Company letterhead; 1 on St. Helena Sanitarium letterhead; the remaining letters are on plain sheets. Overall very good with light toning and foxing and a few letters have minor chipping along edges not affecting content. About 16 of the letters mention Clair's business dealings most are vague and discuss his travel plans and limited to a few lines. But 7 or 8 of these letters go into detail about the ships used in the business tonnage of fish caught and market prices and the company's stock. In a letter written from Pleasant Bay Alaska on June 2 1904 Clair writes of 10 tons of Halibut ready for market; June 19th 1905 he writes about a visit from "Mr. Stroud" the president and general manager of the company and also about the selling and buying of shares in the company stock; and on May 27th 1905 he writes of the Treadwell Mines in Alaska sending ore to a smelter likely in Tacoma WA. On June 28th 1905 Clair writes "We got up steam and pumped the water out of the ship today trimmed the ship and secured cargo so it would not slide while crossing Queen Charlotte Sound; it sometimes gets a little rough there
" All of the letters written by Clair show his incredible devotion to wife. Each letter starts with "Dearest little wife" "Darling precious wife" or "Darling loyal heart" and are filled with Clair's exclaims of ardent love the pains of separation and his wish to be home with his wife and little daughter in California. Although the letters mostly discuss love for his wife the timing of the letters is important. Written just after the Klondike Gold Rush 1896-1900 and when commercial fishing and canneries were becoming increasingly popular along the Alaskan coast these letters demonstrate an interesting perspective of the development of the last frontier. The details of daily life of an officer of a growing fishing company the attractive letterhead and the quantity of letters make this collection important to researchers and historians of American fisheries and the Alaska Territory. . unknown books

"This important work is being brought back into print for the 50th anniversary of the naval battle that broke the stalemate in the long and bloody campaign for Guadalcanal. Though little known the midnight battle off the northwest point of the island is memorable for the novel circumstances under which it was fought. It was the first real night fighting experienced by U.S. surface forces and was complicated by many factors including new radar devices not yet fully understood and inadequate communications. The author himself a participant describes the battle from both sides drawing on a number of firsthand accounts from the time late on 11 October 1942 that U.S. Task Group 64.2 opened fire on three Japanese cruisers and two destroyers. His description dramatically reflects the confusion miscalculations and remarkable string of events that took place. From the top commander trying to keep control amidst chaos to the sailors belowdecks waiting out the warning of an approaching torpedo this book gives the reader a real flavor for what war at sea was like in the South Pacific. It also offers a unique look at the leadership and tactical demands on ship and task force commanders and on the overall friction of surface warfare. First published in 1968 twenty-six years after the event the book draws on the author's interviews with participants and fills in gaps and reconciles differences encountered in many of the original action reports and Japanese sources. Clarence Cook was not only the first but also the foremost art critic of the last part of the 19th Century. While Europeans were disdainful of American art he was able to show how Whistler and Gardiner were the equals of the best of Europe's artists. He founded a Pre-Raphaelite organization and led in the "Truth in Art" movement. Besides 188 full page engravings there are hundreds of smaller ones which provide the reader with the best contemporary account of the contemporary art movement in the late 19th Century and providing for the first time examples of why America's finest artists were the equal to any others on the world stage. Rarely found complete in the six volume set. Bound in publisher's brown cloth decorated in black lettered gilt spines black and gilt silk like endpapers all edges gilt volume one with a bit of rubbed white paintmost likely from being against a white painted shelf wall. The author claims "This little book is imperfect and incomplete but it will enable the owner to speak French enough to get about Paris." The book is divided into sections on the Hotel Railway Station Public Carriages About Bread and Coffee Midday Meal Dinner About Wines Things for Men Things for Women and then general numbers and vocabulary. Sections are interspersed with helpful hints such as "Pinch your nose when you say anything ending in n in order to achieve the nasal sound desirable." Wine vocabulary includes translations for Good Red Wine St. Jullien and Good White Wine Sauterne revealing some contemporary prejudices. There is a little bit of pencil annotation to the wine page and to one other otherwise very good in printed pale green canvas wrappers with a pocket in the front. Bit of edge wear and light soiling to wrappers otherwise very good. Rare. OCLC locates four copies of the 1907 second edition only only one in the US and none of this first edition. C.S. He draws from a multitude of primary sources including personal correspondence and political memoranda to show how Britain at the height of her power but suffering from internal political strife made one mistake after another culminating in the loss of her prized colonies. In opposition to King George's American policies were such towering figures as William Pitt Edmund Burke and Charles James Fox; their speeches in the House of Commons are some of the best oratory in the English language. But despite their eloquence and forcefulness they did not have the votes to prevail. In the end the Americans rebelled as much against an English political state of mind as against the British Army. Cook takes us through the war years: King George's decision that "blows must decide" the colonies' future; Lord North's futile effort to negotiate peace after the British defeat at Saratoga which only hastened the American alliance with France; the secret letter from Washington to Lafayette that the British intercepted perhaps altering the outcome of the Battle of Yorktown; and the peace negotiations masterminded by Franklin and John Jay.
