SALT George
The Shira Plateau of Kilimanjaro.
London: Royal Geographical Society 1951. 17 pages including a full-page sketch map. Plus black and white plates. Original condition with blue wrappers titles to front and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue seldom found in such good and original condition. This mountaineering expedition account takes the unique perspective that Kilimanjaro is the product of not only two volcanoes but of three - Shira Mawenzi and Kobi. Focusing on the Shira Plateau the author examines Kilimanjaro's history topographical features and climate while remarking on magnificent glaciers such as the great Drygalski and the Kibo. The author observes that some habitats for instance extensive bogs or ponds which are usually not found on steep sloping ground do occur on the Shira Plateau and in them may be found animals absent elsewhere on the mountain. This expedition procured a large number of zoological and biological samples for scientific study. First Edition. Royal Geographical Society unknown

SALT Henry 1780 1827
A View near the Roode Sand Pass at the Cape of Good Hope
London: William Miller 1809. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by J. Bluck after Henry Salt on wove paper. A lyrical South African view from the 'Roode Zand' Red Sand Pass inland from the Cape of Good Hope. Henry Salt artist traveller diplomat and collector of antiquities was born at Lichfield Staffordshire England 14 June 1780. He was destined to be a portrait-painter and on leaving school was taught drawing by Glover the watercolour-painter of Lichfield. In 1797 he went to London and became a pupil of Joseph Farington R.A. and in 1800 of John Hoppner R.A. The turning point in his career was 3 June 1802 when Salt left London for an eastern tour with George viscount Valentia afterwards Lord Mountnorris whom he accompanied as secretary and draughtsman. He visited the Cape India Sri Lanka and in 1805 Abyssinia returning to England on 26 Oct. 1806. He made many drawings some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's Voyages and Travels to India published in 1809. The present image is from a work titled Twenty-four Views in St. Helena the Cape India Ceylon the Red Sea Abyssinia and Egypt published by William Miller with hand-coloured aquatints by D. Havell and J. Bluck from Salt's own drawings. The originals of all these drawings were retained by Lord Valentia who also retained the ownership of the copper plates after Salt's death. The format and style of presentation of the plates is similar to Thomas and William Daniell's great work Oriental Scenery 1795-1808 and displays great artistry by both Salt and his engravers. "On 2 March 1809 Salt sailed on a mission from the British government to Abyssinia to carry presents to the king and report on the state of the country. Owing to factious unrest he was prevented from going to the king at Gondar and was obliged to deliver the presents instead to the ras of Tigré. While in Abyssinia he made many observations on the geography the customs of the people and the flora and fauna. He brought back many specimens including a previously unknown dik-dik . In 1812 he was elected one of the very few honorary members of the African Association in acknowledgement of information he had procured in its interest. In 1814 he published A Voyage to Abyssinia which was received with some acclaim" ODNB. London: F. C. and J. Rivington 1814. Quarto 315 x 241 mm. Untrimmed in recent dark brown half morocco decorative gilt spine gilt lettered direct marbled sides endpapers renewed. With 6 folding maps one hand-coloured 28 engraved plates and 2 vignettes by Charles Heath after Salt. Ownership inscription at head of contents "Rowland Swann Holme Ashford-in-the-Water Derbyshire 15th June 1871" and at the end of the list of plates "John Sleigh Hawdry Leek Staffordshire; bequeathed by his grandfather Myles Atkinson vicar of Walton-on-the hill Lancashire". First few pages a little soiled title page and dedication leaf creased text block lightly browned a few leaves heavily so a handful of edge-splits with old repairs remains very good. First edition of this handsomely illustrated and important 19th-century account of Ethiopia. In 1802 Salt accompanied Viscount Valentia on a tour of India Ceylon and the Red Sea serving as his secretary and draughtsman and in 1805 was sent by him on a mission to the ras of Tigré "whose affection and respect he gained and with whom he left one of his party" ODNB. In 1809 his knowledge of the region led to his being selected by Canning to act as a "quasi-official envoy … marching from the Red Sea coast with an escort of 160 bearers to explore trade and diplomatic links with the Ethiopian emperor Wolde Selassie. Britain fearing a French alliance with Egypt wished to secure a port on the Red Sea" Howgego. While in the country he made detailed observations on the geography the customs of the indigenous peoples and the flora and fauna returning with numerous specimens including a previously unknown dik-dik. He also carried out "a little archaeology discovering in Aksum three large limestone tablets engraved with ancient Ethiopian inscriptions" ibid. His mission yielded little by the way of concrete results but on his return Salt "became a fellow of the Royal Society and of the Linnean Society and a correspondent of the Institut de France. In 1812 he was elected one of the very few honorary members of the African Association in acknowledgement of information he had procured in its interest" and on publication the present work was "received with some acclaim" and earned its author £1000. Salt was an accomplished draughtsman and employed Charles Heath - "a pioneer in new printmaking techniques" ODNB - to engrave his sketches. "Salt's paintings of India have acquired monumental status becoming a perpetual nostalgic reminder of the 'British Raj'. However his paintings of Abyssinia Ethiopia have not gained the consideration they merit" Eyob Derillo "Henry Salt and the Highlands of Ethiopia Abyssinia" British Library: Asian and African Studies blog 10 December 2015 retrieved 6 January 2020. 1814. London W. Bulmer & Co. for F.C. & J. Rivington 1814. Large 4to 340 x 250mm. Contemporary full tan calf spine gilt in compartments and lettered in one highly decorated in gilt all edges gilt; pp. xi 5 506 lxxv; 28 engraved plates by C. Heath after Salt 2 engraved head- and tailpieces by Heath after Salt 6 engraved maps by A. Macpherson after J. Outhett 5 folding one hand-coloured in outline illustrations in the text roman greek and arabic types retaining half-title; only minor rubbing to extremities expertly rebacked some variable light spotting and browning; Provenance: armorial bookplate Frederick Ducane Godman inside front cover. First edition large paper copy in a good Regency binding. Salt visited Africa in 1809 on a British government mission to establish contact with the King of Abyssinia and to report on the state of the country. He stayed there for two years and on his return wrote this 'very interesting work' Blackmer which includes an account of the Portuguese settlements on the east coast of Africa and an appendix giving the vocabularies of the dialects spoken by different indigenous peoples inhabiting the coast from Mozambique to the borders of Egypt. As Czech notes 'there is a description of shooting hippopotamus on the Tacazzi River with perhaps the earliest printed illustration of hippo shooting'. Provenance:Fredrick Ducane Godman 1834-1919 was a distinguished British lepidopterist entomologist ornithologist and traveller who correponded with Darwin. Maybe two plates in this work one of birds the other one of insects were enticing enough for him to purchase such a fine copy of this travel book on Abyssinia.
