The Year The Red Sox Won The Series A Chronicle Of The 1918 Championship Season
Boston: Northeastern University Press 1999. Second Printing. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Quarto; pp; xiv ii 293 index; profusely illustrated with black and white photographs cartoons; tan cloth lettered in gilt in a pictorial dust jacket;. When Babe Ruth pitched and slugged the Boston Red Sox to a six-game World Series victory over the Chicago Cubs in 1918 there was every expectation that the team would continue to dominate the national pastime. It would be another eighty years before fans were delivered from the Curse of the Bambino. Now they -- and baseball fans everywhere -- can relive that glory season as told by the sportswriters and cartoonists of the day. This lavishly illustrated work offers illuminating detail on the games the players and the times and it contains a treasure trove of baseball lore. Readers will find out why and when the Star Spangled Banner before it was the national anthem was played before games and they will learn why the threatened player strike over the World Series' low purse left hard feelings that reverberate today. Dancing with Strangers: a Memoir
New York: Simon & Schuster. New in Near Fine dust jacket. 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. Arresting prose and a provocative conclusion - challenging the idea that our destinies are fundamentally linked to race - distinguish this remarkable memoir of growing up black in the American Midwest in the turbulent 1950s and 1960s. Set in an Ohio steel town and an exclusive upstate New York private university Dancing with Strangers is an evocative remembrance of an American's coming of age during the decade preceding the sixties' revolutionary transformation of American society. A dramatic novelistically rendered account it is the story of an individual's triumphant struggle for personal identity during an era when conformity class race and political xenophobia dominated the American landscape. There is an approximate 1" narrow black remainder mark on the bottom of the book. 320 pages. The jacket has a tiny tear at the spine bottom. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. . Simon & Schuster hardcover

Stepin Fetchit: The Life and Times of Lincoln Perry
New York: Pantheon Books. Fine in Near Fine dj. c.2005. First Edition. Hardcover. 0-375-42382-6 . beautiful clean copy no discernible wear to book at all; jacket shows only light surface handling wear. B&W photographs The first full-scale biography of the first African-American movie star whose talents were channeled by the narrow and essentially racist world-view of the Hollywood mainstream cinema into comic portrayals of lazy shiftless black men -- stereotypical roles of the worst sort which he filled with such brilliance that his very name became a kind of shorthand for the stereotype itself. Ironically his on-screen subserviance made him an off-screen millionaire "the highest paid and most popular black comedian in America during Hollywood's Golden Age" but his off-screen behavior and extravagant lifestyle eventually drove him into bankruptcy and near-destitution. He fortunately lived long enough to have been "rediscovered" and honored for his achievements but he was a controversial and even by some reviled figure right to the end and even today it's hard for modern audiences to see through the stereotypical characters to the talented man behind them. .
