About Picasso : Pablo Diego Jos� Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Mar�a de los Remedios Cipriano de la Sant�sima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruiz y Picasso ; October 25 1881 to April 8 1973 ; was a Andalusian Spanish painter draughtsman and sculptor. As one of the most recognized figures in twentieth century art he is best known for co founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Picasso was baptized Pablo Diego Jos� Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Mar�a de los Remedios Cipriano de la Sant�sima Trinidad Clito a series of names honouring various saints and relatives. Added to these were Ruiz and Picasso for his father and mother respectively as per Spanish custom. Born in the city of M�laga in the Andalusian region of Spain he was the first child of Don Jos� Ruiz y Blasco ; 1838 to 1913 ; and Mar�a Picasso y L�pez. Picasso�s family was middle to class; his father was also a painter who specialized in naturalistic depictions of birds and other game. For most of his life Ruiz was a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum. Ruiz�s ancestors were minor aristocrats. The young Picasso showed a passion and a skill for drawing from an early age; according to his mother his first words were �piz piz� a shortening of l�piz the Spanish word for �pencil�. From the age of seven Picasso received formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. Ruiz was a traditional academic artist and instructor who believed that proper training required disciplined copying of the masters and drawing the human body from plaster casts and live models. His son became preoccupied with art to the detriment of his classwork. The family moved to La Coru�a in 1891 so his father could become a professor at the School of Fine Arts. They stayed almost four years. On one occasion the father found his son painting over his unfinished sketch of a pigeon. Observing the precision of his son�s technique Ruiz felt that the thirteen to year to old Picasso had surpassed him and vowed to give up painting. In 1895 Picasso's seven to year old sister Conchita died of diphtheria to a traumatic event in his life. After her death the family moved to Barcelona with Ruiz transferring to its School of Fine Arts. Picasso thrived in the city regarding it in times of sadness or nostalgia as his true home Ruiz persuaded the officials at the academy to allow his son to take an entrance exam for the advanced class. This process often took students a month but Picasso completed it in a week and the impressed jury admitted Picasso who was still 13. The student lacked discipline but made friendships that would affect him in later life. His father rented him a small room close to home so Picasso could work alone yet Ruiz checked up on him numerous times a day judging his son�s drawings. The two argued frequently. Picasso�s father and uncle decided to send the young artist to Madrid�s Royal Academy of San Fernando the foremost art school in the country. In 1897 Picasso age 16 set off for the first time on his own. Yet his difficulties accepting formal instruction led him to stop attending class soon after enrollment. Madrid however held many other attractions: the Prado housed paintings by the venerable Diego Vel�zquez Francisco Goya and Francisco Zurbar�n. Picasso especially admired the works of El Greco; their elements like elongated limbs arresting colors and mystical visages are echoed in Picasso�s �uvre. Picasso�s work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period ; 1901 to 1904 ; the Rose Period ; 1905 to 1907 ; the African to influenced Period ; 1908 to 1909 ; Analytic Cubism ; 1909 to 1912 ; and Synthetic Cubism ; 1912 to 1919 . Quasi ignorato all'epoca, negli ultimi decenni il libro è stato scoperto e apprezzato dai massimi esperti di cubismo. Si tratta di un'opera eccentrica, divisa in due parti: una raccolta di riflessioni aforistiche non solo su Picasso, ma anche su estetica e sociologia dell'arte; una trattazione sulla tecnica espressiva del pittore nella sua evoluzione dal 1900 al 1914. L'autore del saggio sostiene l'eccezionalità delle soluzioni estetiche di Picasso nel contesto delle avanguardie, a differenza degli interventi dell'epoca sul cubismo (su tutti, quelli di Soffici e Apollinaire), e al tempo stesso esalta la bellezza delle sue sperimentazioni più estreme, in polemica con le pessimistiche interpretazioni metafisiche di Berdjaev. Corredata da un ampio commento, questa edizione mira a offrire per la prima volta al pubblico italiano un testo di rilievo nella critica cubista, oltre che un'opera poco nota dell'«Età d'argento» della letteratura russa.

Il sentimento della natura, la spontaneità delle emozioni, la passione amorosa, la nazionalità, l'eroismo, la libertà, la diversità divennero oggetto di rinnovata attenzione da parte degli individui più sensibili producendo, così, un nuovo modo di essere nella cultura e nell'arte. Tale tendenza che auspicava, al contempo, il recupero della tradizione e una propria identità controcorrente viene indicata con una parola carica di valenze e di significati sempre nuovi: romanticismo. Nell'età romantica - come bene emerge dalla ricostruzione globale messa a punto in questo volume - la pittura europea si manifestò come una forma d'arte plurale e perciò, di volta in volta, naturalistica, storica, simbolica, mistica. Un'arte radicata, in modo profondo, nella civiltà filosofica, letteraria e musicale del tempo, le cui espressioni costituiscono uno degli archetipi fondamentali della spiritualità dell'Occidente. La pittura del romanticismo - attraverso le poetiche di Runge e di Friedrich, di Géricault e di Delacroix, di Füssli e di Blake, di Constable e di Fontanesi, di Turner e di Goya, nonché di altri artisti - può essere legittimamente considerata come un'arte nello stesso tempo innovativa, in rapporto alla propria epoca e, quindi, allo stile neoclassico, ed inaugurale, in rapporto alla modernità successiva in un percorso che, dagli inizi dell'Ottocento, giunge fino alle avanguardie del XX secolo.

Paris; Editions Albert Skira 1934 1934 1935. Issues 5 6 and 7 bound together in one hardback volume. 4to 31cm x 25cm iv 33pp 68pp 69pp plus plates and adverts. Bound in plain brown cloth with the original cover of issue number 5 a design by F Bores pasted to the front board. The binding is defective - a substantial section of the spine is missing but the text block remains tightly bound. There are some signs of wear to the contents - the endpapers are foxsed a few of the plates have some creasing of the corners and there is a tear to one page. This book includes originals of issues 5 6 and 7 of the avant-garde surrealist magazine. Please note that the covers of issues 6 and 7 have not been bound in. Text in French.
