br. «"Non faccio mai un quadro come opera d'arte; ognuno di essi è una ricerca. Sono sempre alla ricerca e c'è una sequenza logica in ciò che ricerco. È per questa ragione che li numero; è un esperimento nel tempo; li numero e li dato; forse un giorno qualcuno me ne sarà riconoscente". Questa osservazione di Picasso è significativa, ci indica come, secondo lui, l'elemento più rilevante nella creazione non consiste in un lavoro singolo o nella somma di tutti i lavori, ma nel processo di fluttuazione e di continua trasformazione offerto dalla sequenza dei tentativi. Secondo Picasso, tutta la sua opera creativa sembra possedere una dimensione temporale che non deve esser considerata come biografica ma come un aspetto essenziale dell'opera stessa. Ne consegue che gli schizzi per una determinata opera devono essere considerati alla stregua di una sequenza di opere compiute, e che essi, oltre a rappresentare gli stadi successivi d'un problema risolto gradualmente, debbono essere considerati come varianti sul tema di quella particolare opera. Ecco perché dobbiamo considerare come significativo il fatto che, per la prima volta nella storia, un artista abbia creato, catalogato e conservato con cura delle serie così vaste di studi preparatori. Il materiale preparatorio a "Guernica", che viene qui riprodotto nella sua interezza, consiste di disegni e pitture, oltre a numerose fotografie (prese nello studio di Picasso dalla moglie Dora Maar) di vari stadi dell'opera stessa. Dopo le descrizioni più o meno schematiche del processo creativo quali ci vengono offerte dai testi teorici, si rimane quasi stupefatti dalla complessità presentata da questi schizzi, l'ampiezza e la varietà delle invenzioni, l'avanti e indietro dei tentativi, gli scarti, l'abbondanza delle combinazioni e delle modificazioni sperimentate».

Ouvrage illustré d'une pointe-sèche originale en couleurs de Pablo Picasso tirée dans les ateliers Georges Leblanc à Paris. Signature manuscrite de Pablo Picasso à la justification du tirage. Reliure en plein box gris dos lisse titre et noms de l'auteur et de l'illustrateur frappés à l'or sur le dos plats ornés d'un décor abstrait et géométrique de filets dorés et noirs gardes et contreplats de box gris souris couvertures et dos conservés tête dorée chemise en demi box gris souris plats de papier marbré étui bordé de box gris souris plats de papier marbré reliure de l'époque signée Desmules. Reprenant un procédé utilisé l'année précédente pour l'illustration d'Autre chose de P.A. Benoit l'artiste a percé la matrice du noir faisant apparaitre un cercle vide dans la gravure. Ce cercle non pressé par la plaque forme en relief une demi-sphère blanche œil unique et vide d'un personnage aux membres désarticulés très sûrement inspiré de l'un des grands dessins d'Artaud de 1946 «L'Homme et sa douleur» conservé au musée Cantini à Marseille. Rare et très bel exemplaire parfaitement établi en reliure à décor comportant la seule taille-douce réalisée en couleurs par Picasso en illustration d'un livre.  Louis Broder unknown

Chemise et étui de l'éditeur noir et gris titré en rouge sur le dos. 1 GRAVURE ORIGINALE AU BURIN ET À LA POINTE SÈCHE EN COULEURS (150 x 120 mm). C'est la seule gravure en couleurs réalisée par Picasso pour un livre. La typographie est dûe à l'imprimerie Union et le tirage de la gravure à Georges Leblanc. Édition : 120 exemplaire sur papier ancien du Japon (100 + XX). Le n° X/XX SIGNÉ AU CRAYON PAR PICASSO au colophon. Parfait état. Référence : Cramer Picasso Les livres illustrés, n° 87, reproduit. Title, text, justification and one etching, the justification signed in pencil by Picasso, copy number X/XX, in mint condition, loose in Japan upper wrappers with author's name and title printed in red on front, within grey paper-covered boards and black paper-covered slipcase with lettering in red on spine, the boards and slipcase in perfect condition (book). overall 178 x 152mm. "The only engraving in color Picasso ever made for a book". (Artist and The Book 239 ; Bloch 824 ; Cramer/Goeppert 8 7; Geiser C79 ; Monod 539).
