Publisher's original dark grey cloth with gilt titles to the spine and upper board and a detailed gilt stamped ouroboros-like design featuring two snakes to the upper board. Illustrated with black and white woodcut illustrations throughout. A very good copy the binding firm with some fading to the spine and board edges and light wear and scuffing to the upper and lower board. The contents with some faint pencil marks to the endpapers and prelims are otherwise clean throughout. Hans Holbein's stunning woodcuts for the Alphabet of Death which ties in with his original Dance of Death accompanied by Latin quotations shows a different person for every letter of the alphabet from a musician to a child in a crib and serves as a dark memento mori. Though he wrote prolifically and held many positions of authority as a theater director Holbein never achieved the same fame and acclaim as his conetemporaries. Geneve - Fred Boissonnas 1939 Book. VERY. Hardcover. A collection of the artistic works of Hans Holbein the younger. With the contents and descriptions in French. Each plate is numbered with its corresponding title and artistic details of the mediums used to the contents page. Set has nine volumes the original volumes 1-8 and an additional volume 8. Collated. Volume I appears to only contain the first ten plates listed on the contents. However it has four of each of the first tenplates and the portfolio has three of the same contents pages present. It is possible that a prior owner has collected these together. Volume II is lacking plate VI6. Volumes I IV VIII are lacking the title pages. Volume V is complete. Volume VI is lacking plates XXVI8 and XXVI9. XXVI10 is disbound/separated from mountboard though present. The first of the volume VIIIs is lacking plates XL8 XL10 XXXVI7 and XXXVI1. The second volume VIII is lacking plates XXVI1 XXXVI2 XXXVI7 XXXVII2 XXXVII4 and XXXVII9. Printed on Van Gelder paper watermark is most visible to contents pages. One of fifty copies printed to this paper as stated to the verso of the title page to each volume. Hans Holbein was a German and Swiss artist and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style. He was one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. This collection of plates of his workare mainlyportraits of noble figures and royalty of theTudor era. Condition: In hardcover portfolios. Externally generally smart. Handling marks to one of the volume VIIIs. Some bumping to the extremities particularly tothe top right corner of the front of volume IV. All portfolios are structurallysound. Volumes I IV and one of thevolume VIII's are lacking the outer wraps of the contents/index with the decorative title page and publisher's information. There are several plates missing as is discussed in the details. The image from plate number XXVI10 from volume VI has separated from the mountboard and the mountboard is not present. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot which tend tobe to the rear of the plates. There is a small tidemark to plate VII4 of volume II does not affect image. Plate XVIII4 from volume IV has offset to therear of the priorplate. Overall: VERYGOOD though incomplete. Geneve - Fred Boissonnas hardcover
