‎Présentation de la réédition:"le 18 février 2001 disparaissait Balthus, l'un des plus grands peintres du XXe siècle. Né Balthasar Klossowski de Rola à Paris en 1908, dans une famille aristocratique polonaise devenue allemande à la suite des partitions de la Pologne, il grandit au sein de milieux intellectuels et artistiques des plus raffinés entre Paris, Genève et Berlin. Etonnamment précoce, il développa très tôt une fascination à la fois pour l'Orient et pour les grands maîtres européens - influences qui transparaissent dans le calme émanant de ses peintures et dans leur étrange intemporalité. Mais l'érotisme et le mystère qui se dégagent de son uvre trahissent une inspiration révolutionnaire qui lui est toute particulière. Balthus était un artiste d'une intégrité inébranlable. En marge de toutes les tendances à la mode, ses uvres furent longtemps collectionnées exclusivement par un petit cercle de connaisseurs, dont Pablo Picasso. Il resta presque inconnu du grand public jusqu'en 1961, date à laquelle sa nomination, par André Malraux, à la direction de la Villa Médicis fit beaucoup de bruit. Devenu célèbre à partir du milieu des années quatre-vingt, il ne cessa de se défier de toute publicité, intimement persuadé qu'il était inutile que l'on connaisse les détails de sa vie privée pour regarder sa peinture. Ainsi, l'aura énigmatique de son uvre entoure toujours le peintre, malgré le fait qu'au cours des dernières années de sa vie, il accepta de recevoir un grand nombre de journalistes et fut le sujet de plusieurs documentaires télévisés. Son fils aîné, Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, a écrit une nouvelle introduction à cette importante sélection d'uvres de son père comprenant son tout dernier tableau inachevé, L'Attente, et la très controversée Leçon de guitare de 1934. Olivier Messiaen 1908-1992 was the pre-eminent French composer of the second half of the 20th century. From a total edition of 100 numbered copies this is ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES WITH A LOOSE COLOR LITHOGRAPH BY BALTHUS. The lithograph in soft colors depicts a bay with a smoking volcano in the background. Balthus Balthazar Klossowski de Rola 1908-2001 was one of the great French artists of the 20th century. In theory the book is supposed to be signed by Messiaen and the lithograph by Balthus but in fact neither is signed. The publication of this book was carried out in the most chaotic possible way: Messiaen ended up signing only presentation copies and Balthus ended up signing only a few impressions of the lithograph.
