Written by Rainer Maria Rilke 1875-1926 "The Sonnets to Orpheus" were penned as a funeral monument to Vera the daughter of a friend. Though he had only met the girl a few times he was shocked by the untimely death of the gifted young dancer and used the address to Orpheus as a symbol for artistic expression demonstrating how it's possible to view death as a continuation of life rather than a termination point. Rilke's original German is presented on facing pages to the English translations and accompanied by two illustrations created in tribute to his childhood friend by Balthus. Michael and Winifred Bixler planned the format at their plant in Skaneateles N.Y. and the Balthus watercolour drawings have been metamorphosed into multi-colour woodcuts by Keiji Shinohara a master Japanese blockmaker who resides in Malden Massachusetts where he printed the entire edition of the illustrations n. b. above info from the LEC Newsletter. An absolutely stunning copy the aesthetic choices made by Shinohara divine the perfect home for both Rilke's poetry and the two illustrations by Balthus. ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter goatskin with linen boards letterpress-printed title label affixed to the front board fore- and bottom edges uncut two woodcuts frontispiece and at the beginning of the second section title page in aubergine and black each poem presented with the German on the left and the English translation facing it on the right; set in Monotype Bembo handmade Kozo Uwazen paper elephant folio size 16.5" by 13" approximately 116 unnumbered pages signed by Balthus on the colophon. The Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter is loosely laid in. Housed in a matching suede-lined linen clamshell box with a brown leather spine label with black lettering. ___CONDITION: Volume is fine with clean boards straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings. The clamshell box is fine strong and sturdy clean without wear. Warum gibt es so wenig Literatur zu Balthus? Warum wird er in der Kunstgeschichte so oft stillschweigend übergangen? Claude Roy versucht, diese Fragen zu beantworten. Für das konservative Publikum waren Balthus? erotische Suggestionen eine unerträgliche Provokation. Den Theoretikern der Avantgarde war sein Festhalten an der gegenständlichen Malerei ein Dorn im Auge. Künstlerkollegen legten sein distanziertes, einzelgängerisches Wesen als Arroganz aus. Allein an den anderen aber kann es nicht gelegen haben, daß Balthus im Kunstgeschehen ein Außenseiter geblieben ist. Roy, der Biograph, Bewunderer und jahrzehntelanger, enger Freund des Malers, läßt keinen Zweifel daran, daß dessen Isolation selbstgewählt, die Irritationen im Umgang mit Kollegen und Gönnern oft mit Vorbedacht provoziert waren. Das Buch zeigt das Bild eines eigenwilligen Mannes, der, früh von seinem Wert überzeugt, in allen Lebenssituationen gerne Herr der Lage war: ?Seinem Vergnügen gesellt sich ein Anflug von Bosheit hinzu? -- das führt zwangsläufig zu Brüchen. Roy vermittelt ein detailreiches Lebensbild, gibt kenntnisreiche Hinweise zur Interpretation der oft hermetischen Bilder und läßt den Künstler an vielen Stellen selbst zu Wort kommen. Der großformatige, hochwertig gedruckte, mit zahlreichen, teils ganzseitigen Farbreproduktionen ausgestattete Hardcover-Band zeigt einen repräsentativen Querschnitt der Balthusschen Figurenwelt -- von den 20ern bis Mitte der 90er Jahre. Dabei wird deutlich, daß die Bandbreite seines künstlerischen Schaffens weit über die gespenstischen Jungmädchenakte, die ihn bekannt gemacht haben, hinaus geht. Vor allem seine Porträts und Landschaften sind bemerkenswert.
