‎Proof sheets with the COMPLETE COLLECTION of the 80 chromolithograph trading cards by Jose SEGRELLES (issued by Chocolates Amatller in 1935) depicting scenes from Don Quijote (Quixote)‎

‎In 1935, Chocolates Amatller, a Catalan company based in San Sadurni d'Anoia, issued 80 different trading cards depicting scenes from Don Quixote by Jose Segrelles. One of these brightly-colored chromolithograph cards was included in each box of chocolates sold by the company. I offer two proof sheets, ENTIRELY UNCUT, JUST AS THEY CAME OFF THE PRESS, with the complete collection of these 80 cards. The first sheet comprises 81 cards representing scenes from the first part of Don Quijote, the second sheet has 81 cards with scenes from the second part (so 162 scenes in all). 79 of the cards are in duplicate, and two are in triplicate, so TWO COMPLETE SETS COULD BE FORMED BY CUTTING THE SHEETS. Each sheet measures 100 x 70 cm. In excellent condition, with the colors very bright. An extraordinarily rare survival.‎

‎1905. Approximately 1100 pieces both loose and in four albums. Most pieces pasted into albums. Albums are quarto and folio in size. Largest album lacking spine and front board; spine deteriorated on second album leaves loose in both. Some light wear to leaves in all four albums some heavier than others. Overall the individual pieces are in very good condition. A large collection of American chromolithographic ephemera. Large group of primarily American trade cards advertisements and other ephemeral printed items most printed in chromolithographic full color. The collection spans a variety of printing firms in various locales including Boston New York New Bedford Philadelphia Buffalo and others. In addition to chromos of flowers and other ornamental scenes there are trade cards advertising a wide variety of products: corsets soap thread medicines and remedies early appliances and household goods shoes furniture dry goods cigars and many more. Most of the advertisements and trade cards are aimed at a female audience relying on the desires of the burgeoning Victorian middle class. ‎London. 1850. Each plate 10 x 7 inches. Plates have overall light foxing; the peach has discoloration at the top left of the sheet. Loosely laid into the original elaborately embossed leather binding which has been mended with a soft brown leather spine. Sold as a group of plates. This is a group of 11 of the 12 plates that were published in Fruits from the Garden and Field. As one would expect with a work associated with Owen Jones the chromolithography is of an extremely high quality including the use of gold lettering. These are naturalistic treatments of plants as opposed to the decorative design of much of Jones work but pattern is an important part of the image. Each plant is associated with a quality or sentiment which is elegantly but lightly lettered in gold and sometimes a little hard to read. The fruits and flowers are: apple utility; pomegranate hard to make out - amb.; wheat and hops strength & wealth; blackberries and other red berries charity; strawberries kisses; grapes hospitality; hazelnuts and grain retrospection; cherries smiles; mulberries tears; peach sensibility; apricots independence. . hardcover‎
