Membre de la société zoologique de Londres en 1906. An outstanding British etcher and illustrator of animal subjects, Leonard Robert Brightwell studied at the Lambeth School of Art, London. Countless visits to the Zoological Gardens, however, provided his most important artistic education. Brightwell became a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London in 1906 and a member of the Marine Biological Association in 1922. During the first half of the twentieth century he was commissioned by these associations and other museums to make scientific drawings of various forms of life, including extinct animals. Leonard Brightwell's first illustrated book (A British Dog in France) was published in 1913. During the First World War (1914-1918) he served in the British Army. After 1920 Brightwell established himself as a major illustrator and as an author.‎

Le succès de ses éditions le fit commissionner pour illustrer Rabelais et Anatole France. Il tombe dans l'oubli dans les années 1940, mais plusieurs de ses aquarelles sont conservées à Stanford University.‎

‎Coins du cartonnage usés et quelques discrètes traces de doigts sur certains feuillets.Kate (Catherine) Greenaway (17 mars 1846 Londres – 6 novembre 1901) écrivain et illustratrice anglais de livres pour enfants. Ses illustrations et ses livres étaient très populaires dans les années 1880 et 1890. Les nouvelles techniques de photolithographie lui permettaient de reproduire ses délicates aquarelles. Ses seuls rivaux étaient Walter Crane et Randolph Caldecott. Elle travailla avec John Ruskin et elle fut une amie très proche de la peintre Helen Allingham. Ses personnages étaient des petits enfants habillés à la mode du début du XIXe siècle : sarrau et justaucorps pour les garçons, robe et bonnet de tissu ou chapeau de paille pour les petites filles. Une génération entière de mères des cercles artistiques éclairés britanniques habilla ses filles avec les pantalons et les bonnets qu'elles voyaient dessinés par Kate Greenaway. Elle vivait dans une maison de style Arts & Crafts qu'elle fit dessiner par Richard Norman Shaw à Frognal, Londres, et passait ses étés dans le petit village du Nottinghamshire, Rolleston, près de Southwell.‎
