Specimen of George Cruikshank's signature to front free endpaper xvi including hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and title with vignette 376 pp. with 35 fine hand-coloured aquatints 3 folding leaves of music; bound without half-title advertisements or very rare 'to the subscribers' leaf as usual light offsetting to text. Full polished calf gilt by Rivière & Son covers with triple gilt border spine in 6 compartments brown morocco lettering pieces to second and third others richly gilt raised bands all edges gilt; neatly rebacked preserving spine. Scarce first edition first issue. There was a translation into French. At least six plays were based on Egan's characters contributing to yet more sales. One of these was exported to America launching the Tom and Jerry craze there. The version created by William Thomas Moncrieff was praised as The Beggar's Opera of its day. Moncrieff's production of Tom and Jerry or Life in London ran continuously at the Adelphi Theatre for two seasons and it was the dramatist's work as much as the author's that did so much to popularise the book's trademark use of fashionable slang. In 1821 Egan announced the publication of a regular journal: Life in London appearing monthly at a shilling a time. It was to be illustrated by George Cruikshank 1792 – 1878 and was dedicated to the King George IV who at one time had received Egan at court. The first edition of Life in London appeared on 15 July 1821. Egan's creation was an instant success. Pirate versions appeared featuring such figures as 'Bob Tallyho' 'Dick Wildfire' and the like. Printmakers speedily knocked off cuts featuring the various 'stars' and the real-life public flocked to the 'sporting' addresses that Egan had his heroes frequent. Gilt edging lettering and 3 bands not raised. AEG. No text. 20 pp each with an individual bw etching / engraving. With bookplates by prominent people. The title page is hand-lettered and there is no printed publication information. This is a unique and important item of Cruikshankiana. Ex-library copy with minimally offensive marks given the importance of each one. This volume contains ONLY the 20 engravings used as illustrations for Eccentric Tales. The original sketches were by Alfred Henry Forrester under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill. The actual book illustrations then were done by George Cruikshank. This particular book contains Forrester's personal book plate. Another book plate is of Albert M. Cohn who wrote a catalogue raisonne of Cruikshank's works in 1924 a small label on the fep makes reference to this catalogue #471. And a third book plate is of William Hartman Woodin Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. The final bookplate present is that of the Brooklyn Public Library. Plates No. 8 and 15 have remarques. The Cruikshank illustrations in Eccentric Tales were apparently hand-tinted but these images are in b/w with no tinting and appear to be etching proofs for the final illustrations. Il succède à René Giffey pour la bande dessinée L’espiègle Lili dans la revue Fillette, en 1916. Il participera à la création des personnages Ninette et Clolo, avec Joseph Valle. Il contribue également à deux autres revues pour enfants, L'Épatant et L'Intrépide. Lorsque les progrès de la photographie retirèrent aux dessinateurs-reporters leur gagne-pain, il resta l'un des derniers à concurrencer victorieusement l'appareil, notamment dans les colonnes de L'Illustration. Après la guerre il conserva, par goût plus que par nécessité, le reportage judiciaire. Il se passionnait pour les grands procès et crayonna des centaines de croquis d'audience. Certains de ces "clichés" passaient à la une du Parisien. Il travailla aussi pour d'autres journaux, comme illustrateur ou dessinateur, tels que Le Dimanche Illustré, Les Belles Images, Le Petit Journal, Le Journal, Le Matin ou encore Le Charivari.
