Wear and rubbing to covers a few white spots on front cover a 1 1/2" cut in spine cloth and small chips/tears at corners along edges and at spine ends and a little loss at spine tail. Black gilt and silver illustrations on front still very striking. Covers and end pages detached. Sewing on the inner spine looks sound just needs re-gluing and new crash before recovering. Mild age toning and light soil throughout. Gilt closed edges. Wonderful illustrations. Due to size and/or weight of the book I can only ship it domestic mail. A Little Store that's BIG on Service. Philadelphia: William T. Amies 1884. Leather bound. Quarto 30 cm 3/4 dark red leather with speckled paper covered boards and a gilt tooled spine. All edges gilt. Good only. The covers and spine are heavily rubbed and abraded. The underlying boards are exposed along the edges. There is a 1 inch deep loss from the boards and leather at the head of the spine and there is a 1 and 1/4 inch loss from the leather and boards at the foot of the spine. The edges of the endsheets are subtly stained. The pages are mildly browned and the bottom edges of the pages are occasionally moisture stained. The book is sturdy. Containing One Hundred Superb Illustrations and a Page of Explanatory Letter-Press Facing Each. Doré became famous for illustrating such books as Dante's Inferno 1861 Don Quixote 1862 and the Bible 1866. He was so prolific that at one time he had more than forty blockcutters working for him. Nice frontispiece illustra tion of Dore. Among the many illustrators are Pannemaker Bert Rand Martes and Fagman. About 200 pages.12x91/2.Less than fair condition with dark brown cloth boards and black and gold lettering and I llustrations on front. White lettering at bottom. All gold lettering worn off spine. Spine is damaged. Torn part is repairable but 11/2 inches of bottom is missing with rough edge tearing. Front hinge is only being held on by gauze. Frontispiece title page and part of preface while one piece is completely separated from book. Many edge tears. Rest of book has looseness. Rear board is barely ho lding on. Endpapers are dark tourquoise. Ffep missing. All pages are lightly browned. AEG. ; Book number is SVR35-60. . hardcover

Well illustrated with many full-page tissue-guarded plates on thicker semi-gloss stock. Good spine ends worn somewhat on 2 volumes contents are routinely in near fine to fine condition. Volumes I & II Visions of Hell have been reinforced along the interior gutters/spine areas new spine cloth and end papers as well were added in 1943 according to the still present reciept from the bookbinder in Minneapolis. quite long ago he charged $1 per book for all that repair! Original spine cloth/title strip has been laid-down on the new one hence the pealing of spine ends as mentioned in a previous statement of condition. A nice set and quite uncommon thus. . A dozen detailed engravings by the famed artist Gustave Dore reproduced from the original pictures. Each w/tissue guard and caption to adjacent page and each separated w/blank page. With an Explanatory Introduction followed by the richly detailed designs. Attractive near very good example. Scarce finely crafted volume. The Wandering Jew is a figure whose legend began to spread in Europe in the 13th century. The original legend concerns a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion and was then cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming. The exact nature of the wanderer's indiscretion varies in different versions of the tale as do aspects of his character; sometimes he is said to be a shoemaker or other tradesman while sometimes he is the doorman at Pontius Pilate's estate. Cursed because he reviled Jesus Christ in His hour of sorrow the Wandering Jew is doomed to wander restlessly over the earth until the Day of Judgment - the man who could not die. A universal symbol of guilt and redemption which has influenced such widely differing masters as Goethe Shelley Hans Christian Andersen O. Henry and Alexandre Dumas. Tall 6" x 9 5/8" design.
