Three volumes complete with the noted Bartlett views of the Holy Land and with the engraved frontispieces John Carne having resolved to visit as many holy sites as possible left England in 1821 and traveled widely from Israel Palestine Greece through present day Syria and Lebanon and Egypt. The views of Alexandria Antioch Beirut Damascus Jaffa Jerusalem Rhodes and Tripoli are engraved from drawings by W. H. Bartlett. Volume III plates are after drawings by Thomas Allom who was commissioned to complete the illustrations. Large 4to. Tissue-guarded frontispiece and 5 other plates from drawings by Will Vawter. Map of Kankakee Land and the region of the Great Lakes. This book contains a collection of early Kankakee tales and legends before the pioneers and settlers tamed the area. The Kankakee River or Sau-wau-see-be as it was known to the Indians attracted French traders and trappers as well as many Indians tribes. Among them were the Miami then the Wyandottes. The Illinois followed and then the Potawatomi or Potawatomie who became the predominant tribe in the region. It was in the latter part of the 17th century that the Potawatomi migrated from Wisconsin and replaced the Illinois tribe. Related to the Ojibwas and Ottawas the Potawatomi spoke the Algonquin language. Among the tales recounted here are: Hickory-Nuts and Potash; Eagle Point; The Flaming Sea; Wild Honey; Legends of the Lost Lake; The First Citizen of Parkovash; The Rescue; The Story of the First Wagon; etc. An sample from the book: "More than a million acres of swaying reeds fluttering flags clumps of wild rice thick growing lily pads soft beds of cool green mosses shimmering ponds and black mire and trembling bogs - such is Kankakee Land." .
