‎London Jackson Fisher 1836. Original single-sheet steel engraving of a very fine quality. Overall size ca. 215 x 270 mm. Image size ca. 130 x 190 mm. The print is in its original state trimmed and gilded on three sides. It is printed with warmer ink somewhat more dramatic in mood with fine crisp detail subtlety and elegance. In overall fine condition. Preserved in pH-balanced acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine Syria and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett born London 1809 was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain the Americas and the Middle East producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights" as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" London 1849. His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson Late Fisher Son & Co. of London it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne. London, Jackson, Fisher, (1836). unknown‎

‎Tales of Kankakee Land‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1904. Original green pictorial cloth. Spine lettering faded - nearly illegible. Title and illustration on front cover flaking off as usual. Moderate wear to spine ends. A couple of pages opened roughly. Still a good solid reading copy of the scarce 1904 First Printing. Illustrated. Tissue-guarded frontispiece and 5 other plates from drawings by Will Vawter. Map of Kankakee Land and the region of the Great Lakes. This book contains a collection of early Kankakee tales and legends before the pioneers and settlers tamed the area. The Kankakee River or Sau-wau-see-be as it was known to the Indians attracted French traders and trappers as well as many Indians tribes. Among them were the Miami then the Wyandottes. The Illinois followed and then the Potawatomi or Potawatomie who became the predominant tribe in the region. It was in the latter part of the 17th century that the Potawatomi migrated from Wisconsin and replaced the Illinois tribe. Related to the Ojibwas and Ottawas the Potawatomi spoke the Algonquin language. Among the tales recounted here are: Hickory-Nuts and Potash; Eagle Point; The Flaming Sea; Wild Honey; Legends of the Lost Lake; The First Citizen of Parkovash; The Rescue; The Story of the First Wagon; etc. An sample from the book: "More than a million acres of swaying reeds fluttering flags clumps of wild rice thick growing lily pads soft beds of cool green mosses shimmering ponds and black mire and trembling bogs - such is Kankakee Land." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Good solid reading copy. Illus. by Vawter Will. 8vo. 232pp. Charles Scribner's Sons Hardcover‎
