The Nile Boat; Or Glimpses of the Land of Egypt
London: Arthur Hall Virtue and Co 1850. Cloth. Very Good. 10.5" by 7.5". W. H. Bartlett. A beautifully illustrated example of the second edition of William Henry Bartlett's illustrated mid-19th century study of Egypt. The second edition of this work. Collated complete.Bartlett travelled worldwide creating beautiful illustrated works on a variety of locations. Other works include 'American Scenery; or Land Lake and river' and 'Walks about the City and Environs of Jerusalem'. To the preface Bartlett notes that the illustrations in this work were drawn on the spot many of them with a Camera Lucida. 'He has endeavoured to present within small compass as much variety as possible displaying the principal monuments of the earlier or Pharaonic monuments as at Thebes; the later Ptolemaic style as at Edfou and Philae; with some of the most beautiful specimens of the Arabian at Cairo'. The accompanying text to the illustrations are from a variety of authorities whom Bartlett cites. However he also notes his gratitude to Samuel Sharpe a historian of Egypt who provided the introduction to this work but also allowed the quotation of several portions of his own work on Egypt for this volume. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally bright. Joint heads and tails starting with boards slightly tender. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with instances of spotting and handling marks to plates. Very Good Arthur Hall, Virtue, and Co hardcover
