The second edition of William Henry Bartlett's work on his travels around Jerusalem illustrated profusely with his engravings. The second edition of this work. Unusually clean and bright. Undated dated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. A lovely topographical travel work on Jerusalem in the mid nineteenth century. The work discusses ancient Jerusalem and takes the reader of three walks around the city. Illustrated with a frontispiece vignette title page two folding plates twenty-two plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett a British artist known for his steel engravings. Label to the front pastedown 'Miss L. Wild from W. S. Binns. . in a slight degree his sense of her uniformly good . which a pupil at Highfield Academy Oldman 10 June 1878'. Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Crack to the head of the spine and head of the front joint. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light markings to the boards. A little discolouration to the spine. Prior owner's label to the front pastedown. Bookseller label to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Bound with: Canadian Scenery Illustrated. Original quarter roan gilt-lettered in decorated publisher's boards; occassional spotting to edges of plates. A rare set of the two works issued together and assembled from the original parts. A most appealing set of an illustrated classic here in extended form with both the separate American and Canadian publications issued in this form as one continuous work numbered as a coherent series on the bindings. The series in this form includes over 200 steel-engraved images. The publisher's charming binding is in particularly good condition. "The New World of Columbus.its sudden rise to independence wealth and power" Author's preface is captured in this Victorian publication on the United States and "British America" Canada with fine engravings after the noted British landscape painter William Henry Bartlett. This is a wonderful illustrated romp published at a time to illustrate the last days of relative freedom of the North American native peoples Willis cites Blumenbach in analysing the "real character of the aboriginal inhabitant" and the development of the cities on the West coast of America and unusually Lower Canada. William Bartlett "made four voyages to the United States and Canada.the fruits of which appeared in American Scenery and Canadian Scenery" DNB. The famous plates depict North American cities New York Philadelphia Boston Washington; important buildings such as the U.S. Bank the Capitol and Yale College; bridges parks falls ferries rivers; as well as fine views of Canada through Quebec Montreal Toronto and including Niagara Falls and Thousand Isles. Also included is an engraved portrait of Bartlett a map of the north-eastern United States and Lower Canada. Sabin calls Canadian Scenery "the finest of Mr. Bartlett's works." Willis's "The Literary Department" accompanying letterpress lyrically opines on the picturesque quoting Byron's Childe Harold on sighting Niagara Falls and noting that in America the traveller may imagine "an Eden newly-sprung from the ocean". ‎London: Virtue/NY: Virtue Emmins 1840. This is four of five divisions of American Scenery; Division IV is lacking. In addition to being issued in parts the work was issued in clothbound divisions containing part of the text and 24 plates apiece. Binding is the original plum blind-stamped cloth spines designed and lettered in gilt both covers designed in gilt with an image of a native archer. Pale yellow coated end papers. Some mild chipping at the spine ends some foxing to margins but plates are clean. The first few leaves of Division I are loose. Divisions I and V contain the decorative title pages for the work; at the end of Division V are bound the preface the printed title pages the contents and lists of engravings and two leaves of ads which include an ad for American Scenery: "Now publishing to be completed in Thirty Parts at One Shilling or in Divisions 7s. 6d. cloth gilt". A little wear to the fore-edges of cloth on a couple of divisions but in general they are bright and attractive. Not often seen in this form.
