After mentioning the ordinary edition of the work Ray proceeds to discuss this “far more appealing.special edition in which the steel engravings are printed and delicately colored on paper with borders cut to various lace patterns. Cette oeuvre est parue chez L�opold Pannier et Cie � Paris en 1842. Une fois de plus dans cet album Gavarni montre son originalit� : ses l�gendes qu�il r�digeait lui-m�me et ses dessins � la plume. Il portait un regard critique et amus� sur la soci�t� de son �poque. L'analyse sociale de Gavarni trouve son pendant litt�raire dans la Com�die Humaine de Balzac. Au cours de la premi�re moiti� du XIX�me si�cle � Paris durant un bon mois de l�Epiphanie au mercredi des Cendres le carnaval parisien �tait une v�ritable institution de r�putation europ�ene d�passant m�me le carnaval de Venise. Tous les bons vivants s'y retrouvaient et Gavarni grand amateur de femmes et de f�tes ne manquait jamais cet �v�nement. Au nombre de ses �uvres Gavarni publia en 1848 un recueil de gravures intitul�: Les D�bardeurs. Dans sa pr�face Hetzel �crit: "Le d�bardeur a un second p�re: Gavarni par qui le carnaval cette r�alit� souvent grossi�re brutale et licencieuse est devenu une folie charmante une com�die pleine de sel et parfois de raison une illusion gracieuse une image enfin et un portrait dont tout le d�faut est d'�tre sup�rieur en tout � son mod�le qui s'efforcerait en vain de l'�galer". Premi�re �dition de cette oeuvre graphique de Gavarni. Le 24 novembre 1866 Paul Gavarni meurt d'une crise cardiaque. Outre les diverses compositions de commande qu'il a en cours au moment de sa disparition Gavarni travaille sur "Les Douze mois" projet dont il a d�j� fix� l'id�e premi�re par un croquis et qu'il est rehausse selon son caprice. Presque trois ann�es apr�s la disparition de l'artiste l'Illustration qui a fait transporter et graver sur bois cette s�rie de figures fait imprimer ce travail inachev� respectant l'�tat ou se trouvait chaque dessin. Gavarni ne va pas chercher dans la mythologie des dieux des personnages all�goriques ou des d�esses pour repr�senter les douze mois de notre calendrier r�publicain. Ces figures ont une suret� de construction qui ne n�cessite aucune des l�gendes habituelles de Gavarni.
