Gavarni 1804-1866; nom-de-plume of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier began his career taking drawing classes while working as a mechanic in a machine factory turning to his vocation as an artist in his early thirties. "His sharp and witty pencil gave to generally commonplace and unartistic figures a life-likeness and an expression which soon won for him a name in fashionable circles for his lithographed sketches portraying the most striking characteristics foibles and vices of the various classes of French society" Wikipedia. A popular series of mid-nineteenth century lithographs picturing costume ball guests issued in various formats some hand-colored; this edition seems to be scarce as we could locate no complete copy i.e. both volumes on OCLC. Very good. Some creasing to the larger margins two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work which when completed included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty present and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty present duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present but not included in the count above. Ray treats the series at some length describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations" and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art." Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier, pseudonimo di Paul Gavarni (Parigi, 1804 - 1866) fu un celeberrimo illustratore, disegnatore e pittore francese. Precoce talento per il disegno, l'autore si propose, fin da giovane, di sviluppare nuove tecniche e materiali incisori, sfruttando nuovi prodotti chimici non prima utilizzati. Già a 20 anni impressionò l'editore Blaisot che gli propose alcuni lavori. Utilizzando i soldi guadagnati si trasferì nei Pirenei dove aveva idea di recarsi per realizzare una serie di ritratti di costumi popolari che uscì poi nel 1828, già firmati con il suo nome d'arte di Gavarni, ispirato da una catena montuosa vista durante il suo soggiorno pirenaico. Nel 1830 iniziò a lavorare per la rivista "La mode" che gli diede grande successo in patria ma anche in Inghilterra, ricevendo anche l'apprezzamento di diversi personaggi importanti come ad esempio Balzac. In questo periodo sperimentò nuove tecniche litografiche. E' di questi anni una delle sue più drammatiche esperienze che segnò anche la sua opera futura. Sulla scorta del successo ottenuto puntò tutti i suoi guadagni nella creazione di una rivista tutta sua che uscita con il titolo di "Journal des Gens du Monde" nel 1835 e che fallendo quasi subito, portò Gavarni, ridotto sul lastrico, in galera per un anno. Questa esperienza la ritroviamo nel 1837 nella serie uscita sulla celebre rivista Charivari, intitolata Fourberies des femmes en matière de sentiments, nella quale denunciava il mondo degli affari. La serie ebbe di nuovo un enorme successo e portò Gavarni ad esser chiamato a presentare tavole su tutti i principali giornali dell'epoca e facendo dell'artista, uno dei più celebri personaggi della sua epoca. Avvicinandosi alla metà del secolo, il suo stile cambiò e si diresse verso temi di denuncia sociale. In 4° (26,5x17,7 cm); (4), 316, (2 b.) pp.16 c. di tav. fuori testo. Legatura originale editoriale in piena tela con ricchi disegni e cornici in oro e a colori, ai piatti ed al dorso. Qualche piccolo difetto alla cerniera anteriore ed al margine alto del dorso con piccolissime mancanze di tela. Tagli dorati. Qualche lievissima macchiolina di foxing in poche pagine, come tipico di tutti gli esemplari, a causa della qualità della carta e per il resto esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima non comune edizione, ancor più rara a reperirsi completa della sua legatura editoriale, di questa importante opera di illustrazione, opera di uno dei più grandi illustratori francesi dell'ottocento. Le tavole impresse "sur velin", inquadrate entro cornici traforate, e acquarellate con colori delicati, recano le veline originali sul retro di ogni tavola in carte a diversi colori per fare da sfondo alle dentelles. Legatura coeva in tre volumi (il quarto volume presenta una legatura omogenea alle precedenti ma realizzata fra la fine dell'ottocento e l'inizio del novecento) in mezza-pelle chiara con titolo e numero del volume impressi in oro al dorso e piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata coeva. Qualche lieve difetto alle cerniere di sue volumi e per il resto, all'interno esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. La versione più estesa delle opere di Gavarni. Esistono diverse versioni di quest'opera con una differenza nel numero di tavole. Il nostro esemplare, con 354 tavole, è quello che presenta un numero maggiore di tavole rispetto alle altre conosciute. Contemporary half black hard-grain morocco ruled in gilt over black morocco-grain paper over boards. Smooth spines decoratively tooled in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt. Marbled edges and endpapers. Minor rubbing to extremities head of spine of Volume II expertly and almost invisibly repaired front hinge of Volume I cracked but sound. Minimal foxing and soiling. Small area of surface abrasion to upper blank margin of plate Artistes —6 facing page 160 in Volume II where it was once adhered to the facing page. Bookplate Bibliothèque de A. Vautrain on front pastedown of each volume. Collating 4 xxxii 380; 4 lxxx 364. Overall an excellent copy.<br/><br/>"The book appeared in part-issues at the rate of one or two a week between April of 1843 and December of 1845. The major attraction of Le diable à Paris resides in Gavarni's plates which are of even greater interest than the 320 wood engravings of his Oeuvres choisies 207. The engraving is superior for the most part and they are new conceptions not versions of his lithographs. He limits himself almost entirely to single figures or pairs evoked with his usual concentration and psychological subtlety. He had a free hand with his subjects since his designs are quite unrelated to Hetzel's text. As usual he arranged them as series some of which those devoted to writers and politicians for example are largely unprecedented in his previous repertory. Les 12 mois de l'ann�e illustr�s d'un beau croquis en noir hors-texte par Paul Gavarni. Reliure �diteur en percaline verte orn�e de l'�diteur plats avec titre dor� toutes tranches dor�es. Premi�re �dition de cette oeuvre graphique de Gavarni. Le 24 novembre 1866 Paul Gavarni meurt d'une crise cardiaque. Outre les diverses compositions de commande qu'il a en cours au moment de sa disparition Gavarni travaille sur "Les Douze mois" projet dont il a d�j� fix� l'id�e premi�re par un croquis et qu'il est rehausse selon son caprice. Presque trois ann�es apr�s la disparition de l'artiste l'Illustration qui a fait transporter et graver sur bois cette s�rie de figures fait imprimer ce travail inachev� respectant l'�tat ou se trouvait chaque dessin. Gavarni ne va pas chercher dans la mythologie des dieux des personnages all�goriques ou des d�esses pour repr�senter les douze mois de notre calendrier r�publicain. Ces figures ont une suret� de construction qui ne n�cessite aucune des l�gendes habituelles de Gavarni. L'artiste a cette fois laiss� le dessin parler tout seul et le dessin bien que muet raconte fort bien ce qu'il a � dire - Quelques lettres du titre dor� sur le premier plat effac�es rares rousseurs une d�chirure sur la page de garde de couleur scotch�e Bon exemplaire. chez Aug.
