"He improved Laplace's work by relating it explicitly to Jacob Sernoulli's fundamental theorem and by showing that the invariance in the prior probabilities of mutually exclusive events is not a necessary condition for calculating the approximate probabilities. The book was in large part a treatise on probability theory after the manner of Laplace with an emphasis on the behavior of means of large numbers of measurements. ‎Paris J. L. Boilly 1821. Engraved broadsheet 36.3 x 27.3 cm. = A rarely-seen portrait of the French mathematician Siméon Denis Poisson 1781-1840. Poisson '.worked on statistics complex analysis partial differential equations the calculus of variations analytical mechanics electricity and magnetism thermodynamics elasticity and fluid mechanics. Moreover he predicted the Poisson spot in his attempt to disprove the wave theory of Augustin-Jean Fresnel which was later confirmed. As a teacher of mathematics Poisson is said to have been extraordinarily successful as might have been expected from his early promise as a répétiteur at the École Polytechnique. As a scientific worker his productivity has rarely if ever been equalled. Notwithstanding his many official duties he found time to publish more than three hundred works several of them extensive treatises and many of them memoirs dealing with the most abstruse branches of pure mathematics applied mathematics mathematical physics and rational mechanics. Arago attributed to him the quote "Life is good for only two things: doing mathematics and teaching it"' Wikipedia. The artist Julien-Léopold Boilly 1796-1874 was noted for his album of lithographs Iconographie de l'Institut royal de France ou collection des portraits des Membres composant les quatre académies depuis 1814 jusqu'en 1825 1820-1825. His portraits are much less stiff and formal than many by his contemporaries. Signed by the artist in the lower margin of the portrait and dated 1821. The caption states the date of Poisson's birth and the year 1812 in which he was elected as a member of the Institut. Uncut. With in the lower right corner a small oval blind-stamp "Galerie Vivienne Bénard". Scattered very mild foxing; a few weak marginal creases; otherwise very good. unknown‎

'The M1 Garand was the battle rifle issued to American forces during World War II and the Korean War. It was the first semiautomatic rifle design to be used by combat forces in any army of the world. It was standardized in 1936 and saw its first combat in the Philippines in December 1941. Few other rifles have developed such a distinguished record as both a battle rifle and a match target rifle. General George Patton called the M1 Garand the greatest battle implement ever devised. The semiautomatic M1 Garand gave the American soldier a distinct firepower advantage over enemy soldiers armed with bolt action rifles that had to be cocked before each shot. During World War II nearly four million M1 Garands were built at the Springfield National Armory and Winchester Repeating Firearms factories. They were issued in every theater of the war. And hundreds of thousands were issued to French Belgian Greek Italian and Philippine allies as well. During the Cold War years until the early 1960s the M1 Garand was the mainstay of our small arms support programs to allied and friendly nations. In the last days of World War II special variations of the M1 Garand designated the M1C were developed and produced as sniper rifles. More were built during and after the Korean War as the M1D. Also during the Korean War the M1 Garand was put back into production at Springfield and in the factories of two private concerns bringing the total production to almost 6000000. Hundreds of thousands of M1 Garands were issued to soldiers of the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam. ‎Tall narrow folio 150 pages in ink; the first 6 leaves with overpasted newspaper clippings; some pages loose cut or missing; some pencil doodlings; some toning and occasional offsetting; contemporary and likely original calf-backed marbled boards spine partially perished and joints cracked. Detailed accounts of the work of a largely unknown itinerant Massachusetts housewright and general builder Simeon P. Pullen. Housewrights were somewhat different than simple carpenters in that they could make plans organize other workers and bring a building project to completion. Little is known about Simeon P. Pullen personally although his marriage to Mary L. Bradford appears in the Fall River Mass. records in 1829. His work detailed here was for jobs in Fairhaven Dartmouth New Bedford Mansfield and Providence R.I. and he boarded his family on location. For a job in Dartmouth in April 1 1834: "Simeon P. Pullen moved into David Crosby house the last day of march 1834 hired the hole consern for one year and to pay him forty dollars rent". His crew at the time included David Cardy who began work May 12 1834 for $5 a month Crapo probably Isaac Crapo and Sparrows whose first name is not given. The next job was in Fairhaven with Mr. Pearce "to finish a part of Mr. Abernathy hous for $225. and find more new stuff ". In 1833: "Mr. William and Charles Mason to Pearce & Pullen for work on Andrew Rodman house witch thay agree to pay and on Miss rodman hous". In Dartmouth in 1834 Pullen did a major job building a bridge for Joseph Gifford at $1.17 per worker per day. In Providence in 1836 & 1837 Pullen was in partnership with one Isaac G. Brown. They worked on projects for Mr. Baker Elisha Durfee's wharf and D. Vincent. "Providence August 1837. D. Vincint to Brown & Pullen for one door frame $1.00 to one window fraim .50 for putting the pediment a crost the north end $12 for a pot closet under the garet stairs $2.00 to cobboards in the chimney $6.00 for repairing the well drum .50 to buildin the fence at .33 per foot $13.33." In August of 1838 Pullen built a jeweller's shop in Providence for Benjamin B. Brownell for $450. He and his crew worked on the steamboat John W. Richmond as well as for "Dr. Arminton". The steamboat John W. Richmond plied the waters between New York and Providence and was named for a successful physician who was also known for holding much of the State of Rhode Island's Revolutionary Debt in bonds and stocks. The last jobs in the book are back in the Fairhaven and New Bedford area. unknown‎
