Ragged right margin but no content lost. Previous folds with weakness at folds. Good Condition.<br /> <br /> Manuscript letter addressed to "Honoured Sir" from the clergyman Simeon Howard of Boston Massachusetts. Sadly we do not know to whom the letter was written but Simeon Howard defends himself against several apparent accusations. To wit--Howard refutes the accusation of having targeted a specific individual in his sermons stating that his preaching was general and not directed at anyone in particular. Furthermore he dismisses the criticism regarding his "wit" and the reference to a sermon on the duty of mothers noting that he simply borrowed the ideas from a published work by a Dr. Tillotson. <br /> <br /> Howard goes on to strongly challenge the recipient's "extraordinary conduct" accusing him of repeatedly speaking ill of him in public misrepresenting his sermons attempting to ridicule him and trying to damage his reputation among his parishioners. He concludes by implying the recipient's actions are an attempt to undermine his ability to serve his congregation and potentially deprive him of his livelihood.<br /> <br /> Simeon Howard was born in Bridgewater Maine May 1733 and died in Boston Aug. 1804. He graduated from Harvard in 1758 and after teaching and at the same time studying the- ology became pastor of a church in Cumberland Nova Scotia. In 1765 he returned to Harvard as a resident graduate-student and was appointed a tutor the following year. In 1767 he became pastor of the West Church Boston where he ministered till his death with the exception of a sojourn of a year and a half in Nova Scotia where he and many of his congregation had gone to avoid the dangers of the Revolution. He published various sermons including a famous 1773 sermon to Boston soldiers where he defines Liberty as the "external force and constraint†by other men."<br /> <br /> A full transcript of the letter will be provided. Several highlights include the following:<br /> <br /> " In general I would observe that the charge you bring against me in the first paragraph is entirely groundless. I did not in either of the discourses with which you pretend to be so much offended point out any particular person as having been guilty of the crime I was preaching against. I did not say or even insinuate that I thout any one of the congregation was guilty."<br /> <br /> "Have you not repeatedly and from time to time for many weeks past spoken of me in the most unkind and injurious terms.Have you not endeavoured to render me ridiculous and contemptible by reflections on my person and manner of life in my youth"<br /> <br /> Unfortunate that we have no record with whom Howard was fighting. Closed tear in inner portion of front flyleaf. Very good. A presentation copy inscribed by Simeon Ide to the editor of THE EVENING BULLETIN on a front fly leaf: "This volume is respectfully inscribed in "Vindication" of a beloved Brother." Also includes a brief pencil correction on page 93 likely in Ide's hand. <br> <br> William Ide emigrated to California in 1845. In 1846 after rumors that the Mexican Republic was going to expel all non-citizens he led a group of settlers in what became known as the Bear Flag Revolt after the California Bear Flag raised as they took control of the Sonoma pueblo. Ide was named Commander of the California Republic. Afterwards most of the party joined Lieut. Col. John C. Fremont in seizing California from Mexico. Uriel Crocker was a founder of leading Boston publishers Crocker & Brewster and later sat on the board of several railroad companies including the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad South Pacific Railroad and St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad. <br> <br> "This SKETCH contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845 and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849 and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which as Ide died in 1852 must have been written within a few years of the event. An interesting account of the overland journey of 1845 and important source on the beginnings of American rule in California in 1846." - Streeter. The work is also important in that it is one of the few overland journals written from the point of view of a woman Ide's daughter who in 1845 at age eighteen accompanied her father west and is unique in its exclusive treatment of the Bear Flag Revolt. Howes speculates that this first edition printed by the author at the age of eighty-six on a handpress "was probably small." William Brown Ide 1796-1852 was a California pioneer that was part of the June 1846 Bear Flag revolt that seized the Sonoma and captured the Mexican Northern California commander Mariano Vallejo. In July 1846 the short lived California Republic supporters joined with Fremont forces to capture California from the Mexican Republic in the U. S. war with Mexico. After the war Ide returned to his home and in 1849 participated in the Gold Rush. Ide dated 1904 on the half-title.<br> <br> No other copy of this variant with the wrappers and additional text has sold at auction aside from present copy and the Larson copy of 1995 since 1962.<br> <br> This copy gifted to the New Hampshire historical society the state of publication is bound with the original printed wrappers for "Scraps of California" still intact and bound in along with the text. Additionally it has the preliminary leaves of Ide's follow-up work entitled Who Conquered California Back cover has at top a caption reading: "More Testimony in Favor of the Efficiency of the 'Bear Flag Party' in Bringing about the Conquest of California" followed by reference to and quotations from Tinkham's History of Stockton 1880. The preliminary 10 pages in this variant has favorable reviews and a criticism of the Upham Life of Fremont and of T. W. Higginson's account of the events in California of 1846. All of this is the exact same as the Streeter 2992 copy. It is believed that this variant was was assembled with the various extra parts in addition to the first edition of the text for presentation.<br> <br> Bound in full speckled polished calf. Boards double-ruled in gilt. Spine stamped in in gilt. Red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Boards edges tooled in gilt. Newer endpapers. Wrappers with some minor discoloration. Some very slight dampstains on bottom edge of first few pages. N.H. Historical Society stamp blindstamped almost invisibly on first leaf. Overall an about fine copy.<br> <br> "William Ide was the leader of the Bear Flag movement at Sonoma and has often been referred to as the "President" of California. He was a man of high ideals and integrity. This little book is source material and the only volume published thus far that deals exclusively with this incident of California history. Ide died in California in 1852. The book was set in type by hand by Simeon Ide William's brother when he was 86 years old. The edition was small and copies are now extremely rare. J. G. L. J. Gregg Layne historian and editor of the Quarterly of the Historical Society of Southern California." ‎London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press 1908. A proud Jewish father publishes for his children First and only edition. A truly sumptuous piece of private publishing produced as a gift for the author's children and grandchildren handsomely printed at the Chiswick Press and finely bound by an unnamed binder of real quality. Among the varied pieces is "A Dream by One who Dreamt It" a prose fantasy conceived at the time of the Dreyfus case of a Jewish state "a beautiful land of very vast extent" where Jews driven out from the civilized countries of Europe by "hatred and envy of the race" live in paradisal self-government. The volume carries the bookplate of Bernard Alexander Isaac 1871-1938. If he is one of the children for whom the book was printed then "Pater" was Frederick Simeon Isaac c.1829-1915. With his siblings Benjamin and Alexander Frederick was a partner in Isaac & Samuel a City of London firm with worldwide interests. He was also a director of several South American utility and finance companies. In the 1871 Census he was described as a "South American merchant" and in the 1901 Census as a "financial merchant". He left £630000 including a range of legacies to Jewish charities. The book is likely to have been printed in small numbers and is unsurprisingly rare. There are no copies listed on Library Hub and Library Hub lists only the Toronto Public Library copy. We were unable to trace any other copy in libraries or auction records. Tall octavo 247 x 184 mm. Photographic portrait of the author as frontispiece with tissue guard title printed in red and black decorative opening initials headpieces and culs-de-lampe. Finely bound in contemporary dark blue crushed morocco titles in gilt direct to spine gilt-ruled raised bands compartments and turn-ins ruled and richly decorated with foliate and circlet motifs in gilt boards panelled in single gilt rules with floral and repeat foliate motifs to corners green silk endpapers edges gilt unsigned but evidently quality work. Pictorial bookplate of Bernard A. Isaac to front pastedown. A few minor marks to covers else a fine copy printed on thick paper and handsomely bound.
