Sheet of six Épinal prints military and religious subjects
France: no publisher no date early twentieth century. Striking hand-colored sheet of six "images d'Épinal." Inexpensive broadsides like these were hugely popular in France in the nineteenth century: naïve woodcuts brightly colored featuring images of Catholic saints Napoleonic battles and storybook characters. By the turn of the twentieth century lithography had emerged as the primary printing process and the range of subjects had greatly expanded but there was still a market for images printed in the old style a graphic tradition that influenced modernists from Henri Rousseau to Alfred Jarry. This group of six separate images printed from blocks on a sheet of Ingres d'Arches paper may be a publisher's proof. The military and religious subjects include uniformed soldiers on horseback the Madonna and child and Saint Hubert's encounter with Christ in the form of a stag. A bright fine example. A folding 'book' of 10 panels titled in crisp black lettering on the cover and in the same bold lettering throughout; with a short list of the material and equipment needed and small pen drawings of these items; followed by explanatory 'pages' each with a 7 1/2" x 10 1/2" tipped-on cloth with pinked edges example of the technique shown following the production of batik in the regular manner and also a special and more laborious technique wherein the wax applied to the design is scraped off by hand in order to provide yet another color: I. Reng. Rengan. "The first drawing on the white material with melted wax in a "chanting" to give the outlines of the design." II. Terusan showing reverse drawing & dyeing III. Tembokan "The spaces in the design which have to be white are covered with wax." IV. Tjelepan or Wedelan "The basic color dark blue is applied by soaking the painted material in wedel which is a vegetable color made of the leaves of the "indigo" plant."V. Kelengan or Lorodan cleaning by boiling in water also 'ngerak' the alternative process VI. Riningan or Biron covering spaces with wax or not if 'ngerak' process VII Sogan "The result after the dying process with soga the brown color made of the "bark" of various mentioned plants VIII Babara Satria Manah "The last process on the material by boiling in water and by scraping out the wax"; each example also has a numbered & typed strip of white cloth sewn-on identifying the piece with the last finished example noting "Made by Mrs. Sudirman Banjurmas"; the final panel noting "Presented by Virginia F. Cutler Djakarta"; a remarkably energetic and talented woman who overcame difficulties associated with an early widowhood childrearing duties and the Depression Dr. Virginia Farrer Cutler 1905-1993 American educator author lecturer professor and head of the Home Economics Dept at the University of Utah created the Family Home Living Center there was educational advisor for the State Dept.'s International Cooperation Admin. in Southeast Asia first in Bangkok Thailand for two years and then in Djakarta Indonesia for five years - we speculate that it was at this time that the "Batik" item was created. Eventually she returned to Utah from Djakarta and became the dean of the College of Family Living at BYU awarded the Fulbright Fellowship to the U. of Ghana in Legon and retired in 1970. Honors include: U.S. delegate to the World Forum on Women Brussels 1962; American Association of University Women Woman of the year 1966; first distinguished professor at the Brigham Young University 1967 and many more. information from the BYU site - their special collections hold a few Cutler items; item not dated and circa 1958; made in one continuous fold each panel approx. 12" x 14 1/2" size with a continuous length of over 12 feet; created on one side only of the panels; we assume that Dr. Cutler collected the work of Mrs. Sudirman in an effort to present it to other English-speakers; the colors rich and vivid on each panel as is the final design; with some of the panels bearing their content of raised wax as appropriate to that stage of the process; each panel on 'manila' cardstock; some edgewear and soiling closed tear to back panel of covers; batiks in very good condition; an impressive visual statement of the technique and the process of this ancient art form. Rome: Faro Disegni 1965. Beautiful archive of midcentury porcelain designs each an original hand-colored work of art spanning a wide variety of botanical geometric and figural styles. Some feature realistic portraits of flowers and birds while others are much more stylized: traditional folk motifs linear Art Nouveau florals bright mod blossoms. This is a working archive: many of the images are annotated and corrected in pencil and themes like the firebird are developed over multiple sheets. Of the 168 designs that survive eight are unnumbered and the others are numbered as follows: 1-47 49-67 69-138 140-144 146-155 157-165. Roman firm Faro Disegni is best known for their textile designs; this archive testifies to their participation in other aspects of the decorative arts. A remarkable survival. Collection of 168 original hand-colored designs for porcelain plates each on a separate sheet of various sizes: a group of 111 designs executed in pencil ink and watercolor on heavy paper most measuring 14.5 x 13 inches and a smaller group of 57 sketches executed primarily in pencil and crayon on onionskin measuring less than 12 inches square. 1934. JAPANESE DESIGN. Juraku Cho. 3 Volumes. Illustrated with a total of 90 colour and monochrome woodblock plates. Oblong folio 390 x 270 mm bound in publisher's silk over boards in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Unsodo 1934. A spectacular series of designs with the superb colour woodblock plates with each volume devoted to a different motif. Volume 1 is Ryu no maki the dragon. Volume 2 is Hoo no maki the phoenix and Volume 3 is Shishi no maki the lion. Both the full colour plates and the monochrome plates facing them are masterpieces of the woodblock maker's art. Unsodo is the name of a large Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Founded in 1891 this company is still in existence today. From the 1890s through the 1930s the Unsodo publishing house was involved in printing high quality pattern books for various crafts including textiles and lacquer. Some wear to the boards but otherwise a fine set. Rare. hardcover books

A letter of February 24 1887 from William Morris to 'My dear Smith' noticing his indignation that he'd been sent by Smith to visit a woman he'd thought to be a potential client who actually wanted him instead to look at her designs. Approx. 4 1/2" x 7" size; printed black in a Kelmscott-style type on quality paper stock; with the original plain paper envelope; slight wear; in very good condition. First Edition. Broadside. 1817. JAPANESE TEXTILE DESIGN. Shozoku shokumon zue. By Matsuoka Tokikata and Hinma Hyakuri. Seven volumes. Containing a total of 160 Japanese folded sheets illustrated with a profusion of colour woodcut-printed designs. 8vo. 268 x 193 mm bound in original Japanese paper wrappers stitched laid in a new Japanese folding chitsu case. Tokyo: 1817-1825. First Edition. A fine set of this important compendium of early Japanese textile design which is also a masterpiece of Japanese bookmaking. Matsuoka Tokikata began compiling the work in the late eighteenth century and it was completed by Honma Hyakuri early in the nineteenth century. The work is divided into five parts: I. Karginu: Colour designs of hunting clothing; II. Jokan: Costume design for court ladies; III. Reifuku: Ceremonial dresses; IV. Nishiki orimono: Designs on brocades; V. Gyoko: Costumes used for Imperial visits. The delicately coloured designs include many that are refined and subtle and many that are elaborate and ravishingly beautiful. The imagery is classical Japanese: a profusion of varieties fill the pages of these volumes with flowers birds bamboo rivers and flowing waters insects butterflies fish coloured patterns and blind-stamped ornaments. Of the greatest rarity. Some minor wear to wrappers but overall a fine set. hardcover books

An eclectic collection of Japanese food and drink labels from the first quarter of the twentieth century. Fruits vegetables spirits candies canned meats and fishes are all represented on colourful labels featuring combined western and Japanese design sensibilities.
