Ecritures Ancienne Volume 1 of the Oeuvres De Jean Midolle
This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding of brown marbled paper boards with an all-over green design. There is a large printed paper label with the title inset in an elaborately lithographed Gothic style frame. Tan paper covered spine of dark green cloth. The edges of the covers have a little wear. Inside there is an elaborately detailed title-page followed by 32 of 40 numbered plates. No evidence of plates being removed, as binding still very tight, but normally with 40 plates. All plates are black & white lithographs showing an amazing variety of typefaces and alphabets. Many are composed out of very imaginatively worked animals, plants, people or inventions forming the letters. A classic of this genre, here an incomplete copy with various faults, such as browning, tiny foxing, and 2 instances of later careful coloring of initials on different plates. Sale code: PF1126 "DOMINIQUE". Text in English and French. The sale consisted of a single family private collection of French furniture designed by Michel Roux-Spitz (1888- 1957) in the 1930's. The family originally moved into the famous building at 115 Avenue Henri Martin, itself an art deco masterpiece also designed by Michel Roux-Spitz in 1929- 31. The furniture in the collection was originally designed for this residence by the architect and designer, and also Domnique who probably supervised the interior decoration. Several vintage photographs of the original residence. Also color photographs of the second residence the family moved to in 1970. The French designer Patrick Naggar supervised this move and installation. 63 lots in the sale. All illustrated in color. Color photographs of the collection in situ at the second residence. Completely clean inside. This catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Philadelphia College of Art following Brodovitch's death in 1971. George Bunker, Director of the College, tracked Brodovitch down in the south of France during his last few years and engaged him in this last project.
