Sendak describes the work as "fantasy sketches stream-of-consciousness doodles dream pictures and probably most apt homework drawings" which he drew between roughly 1952-1957. "In one way or another all such drawings of this period hint at themes that later were developed in my books for children. In fact they touch all the obsessions and ideas that eventually bore fruit in what I consider my best and most personal work." We certainly see hints of "Where the Wild Things Are" and other works that were then in Sendak's future. Also included is a blank Christmas card and envelope with a lovely Sendak illustration published by the Rosenbach Foundation with a copyright date of 1971.
