London.: Zorn and Company. 1867-1869. Ex-library copy of an uncommon journal. Two volumes 141 of 143 tipped-in lithographic plates 11 x 8 inches firmly bound in red cloth boards library binding with gilt title lettering to spine but no external library markings to spine; paste-down library ID on interior front covers of both volumes with clear evidence of a removed "check-out" slip on both volumes' front free end paper. 378 pp Volume I; 366 pp Volume II. Volume I: damage to image p. 267 and image p. 153 missing. Volume II p 214: private parts of Infant Jesus Titian surgically excised. Volume II pp 43-56 missing never bound in with loss of one plate. Offset or creasing to a margin on several tipped in plates; the bulk are clean and bright. Foxing to title page and table of contents in both volumes; scattered foxing throughout. A journal offering instruction in various aspects of art flower and fruit painting figure painting the art of illumination etc. with commentaries on the work of old masters with chromolithographic reproductions of famous paintings or contemporary art work. Numerous articles of general interest on a variety of subjects. It appears a primary aim of the journal was to provide color images of great works of art to the masses. The journal evidently was suspended for several months in late February 1868 and resumed publication with the July 4 number in which the publishers write: "Messrs. Zorn & Company consider it desirable to offer a few observations to the readers of 'The Chromolithograph' on the publication of the first number that has been issued since they became its proprietors. It is intended to spare neither exertions nor expense in endeavouring to carry out the view which 'The Chromolithograph' was originally established namely: That of placing within the reach of all classes of people an Art Journal illustrated in colours and in all respects of a high order of merit." Volume II contains the issue of March 27 1869 with three plates. This the final number is not present in copies held by many of the libraries having "The Chromolithograph" in their collections. .
