De manière ironique, elle précise : « C’est l’histoire au crayon des principales douceurs dont la France a joui jusqu’à présent sous le règne vraiment paternel du Juste-milieu ». La légende est elle aussi ironique et fait référence aux paroles que La Fayette aurait prononcées (mais qu’il a toujours nié avoir prononcées) : « la monarchie constitutionnelle est la meilleure des républiques », lors de son entrevue avec Louis-Philippe le 1er août 1830 au Palais-Royal au moment de lui remettre les pouvoirs de lieutenant général du royaume Sur fond de rayons de soleil, mais ternes, gris, prennent place dix vignettes de forme ronde contenant des saynètes : « les scènes les plus remarquables de cette triste farce » (in explication): 1e vignette : « Patriotes au carcan » : représente deux hommes pendus. 2e vignette : « Affaire du pont d’Arcole » : un pont. 3e vignette : « Transfert des patriotes à Bicêtre » : une charrette transporte des détenus dans une prison. 4e vignette : « Exploits des Sergents de ville » : deux policiers frappent deux citoyens dans une rue (une boutique « EPICIER » à gche). 5e vignette : « Le gérant de la Glaneuse de Lyon » : le gérant du journal lyonnais d’opposition est tenu par des chaînes par deux policiers. 6e vignette : « Mont-St-Michel » : la prison. 7e vignette : « Bonias et Raspail conduits comme des voleurs ». 8e vignette : « Bureaux de la Tribune saccagés » : des policiers détruisent le mobilier du bureau la rédaction du journal La Tribune. 9e vignette : Le Canon dans les rues de Paris. ». 10e vignette : « Assomeurs [assommeurs]. » : des hommes frappent un homme de leurs gourdins. Edition limited to 15 sets, all printed on fine wove paper. Philippon, although little known, was a very talented printmaker. The images include three female nudes, four town views, one interior, one portrait, and two depictions of the port of St-Tropez. 4to. Loose as issued in folding sheet. Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960) was an English author, poet and dramatist. He was born in India, educated in Plymouth, Devon, and worked as an insurance officer for 10 years before studying for the stage and eventually becoming a writer. Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867-1956), was an Anglo-Welsh artist, painter, water colourist, virtuoso engraver and illustrator, and progressive designer. From the blurb: ".during the 17th and 18th centuries as a result of the building of large houses all over the country there came a demand for dccorative sculpture -chimney-pieces and so on -as well as for imposing monuments in the local church. It is from this period that designs survive in relatively large numbers - the earliest in the Victoria and Alb�rt Museum date from about 1670. The Museum has been collecting the original designs by sculptors working in England for more than a century and its collection of them is now the largest in the world. Little has previously been written on these works and this book is the first to be devoted to the subject of preliminary drawings by most of the major sculptors from Pierce Xost Rysbfack Cheere Roubiliac and others of the 17th and 18th centuries as well as some ideas by architects such as William Kent/James Gibbs and Robert Adam for sculptors to work from. The book ends with designs for four controversial 19th century projects - the colossal Wellington placed on the arch at Hyde Parle Corner the Nelson monument in Trafalgar Square Wellington's monument in St. Paul's Cathedral and the memorial to Prince Albert in Kensington Gardens.
