‎CUNNINGHAM ALLAN‎

‎Cabinet Gallery of Pictures By the First Masters of the English and Foreign Schools [DATED 1836 & COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES]‎

‎George And William Nicol, U.K. 1836. First Thus, Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES. PLEASE EMAIL FOR SHIPPING RATES. In Seventy-Three Line Engravings; With Biographical And Critical Dissertations. 204, 192 pages, size 10 inches tall by 6.5 inches. The Unique design of giving specimens of almost every Painter of pre-eminent merit in a single work, is now accomplished by the production, in TWO VOLUMES, of the CABINET GALLERY, which comprises no fewer than Seventy-three Engravings, in the first branch of the Art (the line manner), from the Pictures of upwards of Fifty Masters. A wide variety of English Collections, public and private, have been resorted to, in order to form such a comprehensive display of the various Schools and it may be worthy of remark, that few Galleries present above forty names of Painters, whatever number of Pictures they may contain. It will be observed that many subjects are here also for the first time brought before the notice of the public. The determined aim of the projector of this Work has been that of producing a faithful transcript of the peculiar style and manner of each Painter, and from the great variety of talent employed, it has been so arranged that each Engraver should have an opportunity, free from the disadvantage of haste, of emulating the best examples of the genuine English School, as established by a Strange, a Woollett, and a Sharpe! It may be said that the whole is an achievement in the cause of Art of which any indidual might justly be proud. No pains or expense have been spared to enable the CABINET GALLERY boldly to claim its place in the Libraries and Collections of the first Amateurs-which it now does-though all obtrusive modes of soliciting patronage during its progress have been strictly avoided ; and it may be safely asserted that no Collection of Prints can be presented to the youth of either sex, who enjoy the advantages of a liberal and polished education, with greater propriety than this GALLERY ; it will acquaint them with the styles of the various Painters, and give them that general information on the Pictorial Art, which forms so material a topic of conversation in the elegant, and tasteful, and well informed circles of society. A cursory inspection will show that, in the selection of the Pictures, this important object of the Work has been kept steadily in mind, and the Proprietors can, with great pride, recommend the Criticism and Biographical Sketches of Mr. Cunningham to all who value strong sense and natural and moral feeling clothed in sweet and racy language, unencumbered by the mere technicalities of Art. Books - in Good Plus Plus original pale red/brown boards with blind stamped decoration and gilt lettering and decoration to the spines - irregular fading to the and light marking to the boards, heavier to volume two, some bumping to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light browning and the odd occasional mark to some pages, previous owner's name (Lady Carew Marley ?) to the front pastedowns, otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. An Attractive Set. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Art & Design; Inventory No: 001752. This is a SET of books, therefore heavier than a standard volume, and will involve extra shipping charges to some countries.‎
