‎FINLEY, GERALD.‎

‎George Heriot: Postmaster-Painter of the Canadas.‎

‎Toronto, University of Toronto Press. 1983, First Edition. (ISBN: 0802055842) Hard Cover. Ill.: George Heriot. 310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. "George Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, is best known as a skilled landscape watercolourist and as the contentious deputy postmaster general of British North America from 1800 to 1816. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." Minor wrinkling at top of spine, three small faint stains on rear board. Very Good.‎

‎JOURDAIN, MARGARET & JENYNS, R. SOAME‎

‎Chinese Export Art: In the Eighteenth Century‎

‎Spring Books, Middlesex. 1967. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25.7 x 19 cm; 0.600 Kg; 152 pages with black-and-white illustrations; Used book with signs of wear, namely some yellowing on the outside text block and on the front and rear free endpaper. Minor signs of wear in the interior. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Chinese fine arts found a "sellers market" in eighteenth-century Europe. Fashionable caprice demanded that the great houses of the day should boast, if not a Chinese Room, then at least a collection of Chinese porcelains, lacquer goods, ivories, silks, and wall papers. This fascinating book gives a detailed and very well documented account of the China trade, in which Britain and the merchants of her East India Company eclipsed all other European nations. The authors, both expert authorities on antiques and ceramics, discuss changing European tastes in Chinese goods and show how the Chinese production of goods especially for the European market had a profound influence on design and decoration, particularly in England and France. Much of the book is the result of original research, the authors having studied the diaries, journals, letters, bills and export orders of many merchants and travellers. The comprehensive collection of black and white illustrations shows examples of Chinese fine arts in many private collections in England as well as in the priceless collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.; "A handsome volume dealing with a subject that has suffered from a strange neglect. Admirably illustrated." review from The Literary Supplement. Good/Dust Jacket Included.‎

‎(No pl.), A. Suntach, 1804.Engraving depicting the capture of the two sons of Tipoo Sultan after Henry Singleton by F. dal Pedro. Ca. 29,5 x 41 cm.Following his defeat in the Third Mysore War (1790-1792) the British made Tipu Sultan cede part of his dominions, pay a substantial financial settlement and surrender two of his 16 sons as hostages. Princes Mohin-ud-din (or Moiz-ud-din) (aged eight) and Abdul Khalik (aged ten) were accordingly delivered to Lord Cornwallis, the Governor-General of India, at Seringapatam on 26 February 1792. In February 1794, after the fulfilment of the treaty, the princes returned to Seringapatam. They enjoyed a few years of peace but the conflict between Mysore and the British resumed in 1799. On 4 May that year Mysore's capital was captured and Tipu Sultan was killed alongside 10,000 of his subjects. The princes were captured by Major-General David Baird, who treated them with great respect and arranged for their safe passage out of the devastated city. After laying their dead father to rest they were then sent to Vellore. In 1806, following a mutiny at Vellore among the soldiers of the Madras Army, the princes were exiled to Calcutta along with the rest of Tipu's family, lest they become a figurehead for opposition to British rule in southern India. - Fine.‎
