The plates are all finely engraved and are composed with a central part dedicated to the illustration of the story and a larger one, framing the previous, inhabited with details inspired to the central plate. For the whole book see Booknr. 50936 [LIII, p. 138-139] Iphis was a shepherd who fell in love with the cold hearted Anaxarete. She did not return his love, and treated him so badly that out of desperation the man hung himself in front of her house door. Signed on the lower left corner: 'B. Picart sculp dir.' For the whole book see Booknr. 50936 [XX, p. 47-48] According to Ovid, Pygmalion was a sculptor who once made a statue of a woman, so beautiful that he fell in love with it. He thus went to ask to Venus to turn the statue into a real woman, so that so he could marry her. Picart represents the statue in the central foreground, on a pedestal, naked, who is about to be turned into a woman and climbing down the pedestal. In the background Pygmalion is kneeling in front of the statue of Venus, in a temple, within a garden. For the whole book see Booknr. 50936 [L, p. 131-133] Penelope waited twenty years for the return of her husband Odysseus, during which she devises various strategies to delay marrying one of the many suitors. She has devised tricks to delay her suitors, one of which was pretending to be weaving a burial shroud for Laertes, Odysseus's father and claiming that she will choose a suitor when she has finished. Picart represents Penelope in the act of destroying the work she had been doing during the day. Signed on the lower left corner: 'B. Picart dir.' For the whole book see Booknr. 50936 [IX, p. 23-24] Phaeton died for having ridden the chariot of the sun, usually driven by his father Helios. His sisters, the Heliades, were crying for his death for days and they were turned into poplars and their tears into amber. Phaeton's friend Cygnus was also desperately looking for the body of his dead friend that had felt into the Eridanos river. The gods turned him into a swan for this. He fell in love with the nymph and began chasing her. She asked for protection to Artemis who turned her into a stream. For Alpheus became so miserable, Zeus made his river flow into the same sea Arethusa ends.
