Advertising poster / broadside meas. appr. 45 x 60 cm, top center the central text, below this 1 large [38 x 22 cm] and 4 smaller [19 x 9 cm] illustrations, surrounded by a decorative border. , nicely framed under glass, orange brown 'mahogany' colour frame, dating to the 1950ties. A rare and decorative advertisment / publicity poster, printed and distributed free of charge by the Société Centrale de Sauvetage des Naufragés in 1927. The text in the central top portion of the image presents a survey of the then [1927] operational strength of the Society for the preservation of 'drenkelingen': 108 boat stations, of which 24 with motor vessels [the other stations manned with large rowing boats], 422 smaller posts w. the illustrated apparatus, of which 72 equipped w. guns to launch the guide rope to the ship in need. 1781 vessels saved, 20.887 human lives saved. The equipment ilustrated on the poster is the famous 'broek'or 'wipper toestel', in French 'Bouée - Culotte', still in use to this day for instance on the coast at the Life Boat Station of Egmond aan Zee. The poster depicts two men who have set up their equipment on top of a hill and who have succeeded in getting their land line over to the ship in distress, the caption reads 'Communication d'un Batiment naufrage avec la terre au moyen du "va-et-vient"'. Now with the help of the 'Broek' men can be safely transported to land. The 4 smaller pictures illustrate the ropes, lines and pulleys, the actual 'Culotte' and the methods of fixing the ropes.‎

A lovely small format dark red mor. prayer book, gilttooled, gilt edges. Well bound, beautifully printed. Then as now a luxurious item. The printing, on fine quality paper, executed with the famous calligraphic types imitating the handwriting of P. Moreau. As far as is known some 11 publications only saw the light in the period 1643 - 1648. After having been passed down to a number of printers, in the end the 'Moreau' types were sold in 1787 to the l'Imprimerie Royale. Comp. Brunet vol. III, c. 1895 - 1896: 'Ce P. Moreau est le même qui l'on doit des poinçons et des matrices de caractères imitant l'écriture bâtarde et a la ronde ...' and Idem, Brunet, Suppl. I, c 1117: Updike, Printing types, vol. I, pp. 207 - 208: 'In 1640 a Parisian writing - Master named Pierre Moreau, says Fournier, endeavoured to make punches and matrices of some new types, in the style of handwriting. Of these he made four kinds, grosse and petite batarde, lettres rondes, and another batarde brisée. He dedicated the first proofs of them, in 1642, to Louis XIII, who encouraged the talents of this new typographer by giving him the post of Printer Ordinary to the King... and he printed several works with the aforesaid characters. ... Moreau's types are cleverly shown in J. Baudoin's 'Les Saintes Metamorphoses... 1644'. In this book [as in our 'Les Heures ... also 1644] the type ... really appears to be writing - a careful and lively copy of the agreeable calligraphy of the period. The ornaments used with it are reproductions of writing master's scrolls and whimsical figures, ... [see ill. 147 on p. 209].': PMM (1963 exh. cat.), nr. 90: Johnson, Type designs, pp. 146 - 148: Stanley Morison, Caractères de l'Ecriture, pp. 20 - 26: On Humbelot, who provided the only signed engraving in this booklet, please see Ch. LeBlanc, vol. II, p. 403 & Bénézit vol. V, p. 668, also Nagler VII, p. 188, scant information on this 17th c. engraver. Compared to the other engraved plates the Humbelot engr. seems a bit crude and it is doubtful the other engrs. are by his hand.‎

The 2 portraits and the plate of the hanging appeared in the 'Reysende Mercurius' and were used in a second state in the 'Historisch Verhael' 4 years later. The 'Historisch Verhael' was certainly not written by Lambertus van den Bosch, due to the fact that Cornelis de Witt [allegedly] took his position as Conrector of the Illustrious School of Dordrecht away from him, as a result of van den Bosch's licentious and drunken behaviour. Van den Bosch then wrote his 'Reysende Mercurius', dipping his pen in venom and attacking Cornelis de Witt. NNBW vol. VI, pp. 184 - 186:‎

‎LE BRUN, CH.- KLEINSCHMIDT, J.J.- CHAPELLE DU CHASTEAU DE SEAUX [AFTER AUDRAN]‎

‎'Pater Aeternus sedens Super pennas Angelorum, haec verba in baptismate Iesu Christi proferrens, Hic est Filius meus dilectus. & c.'‎

‎Aug. Vindel., Ieremias Wolff excudit. A very large engraving of the ceiling at the Chateau de Seaux Chapel, consisting of 5 sheets [1 central sheet, surrounded by 4] that together make up one complete circular scene of God in Heaven, surrounded by angels. Diagonal of the 5 mounted sheets is appr. 120 cm. Below the sheet the engraved text 'Pater Aeternus...'. Lower lefthand corner 2 lines of engraved text [ line 1:] 'Carolus Le Brun invenit et pinxit in Capella Castelli vulgo de Seaux [Line 2:] Iohann Iacob Kleinschmidt Sculpsit. Ieremias Wolff excudit Aug. Vindel.' [Augsburg, published by Wolff, no date (appr. 1720)]. The 5 sheets profesionally mounted on cloth over a Ph. neutral core of white paper board. Meas. appr. 130 x 130 cm. Berlin 4023, re-engraved version in 5pls. of the Le Brun / Girard Audran engr. of 1681. Thieme Becker vol. XXII, pp. 510 - 511 [Le Brun]: Charles Le Brun, painter and draughtsman specialized in a.o. ornament drawings., Paris, 1619 - 1690. Le Brun was a highly productive and extremely influential artist, co founder of the Académie Royale in 1648, close associate to Nicolas Foucquet, who commissions the decoration of the Castle 'Veaux' [paintings of ceilings and walls] and hands over the day to day running of the Gobelin manufacturing business Maincy to him, which Le Brun renews and revives. Introduced to the Court by Mazarin, Le Brun receives a wealth of commissions from various well to do and imfluential patrons. Royal painter in 1662. With the help of Colbert he becomes Director of the 'Manufacture royale des tapisseries et des meubles de la couronne'. Le Brun moves into a position of power described by Th./B. as '... sich auf diese Weise bald die Stellung eines mit unbeschrankten Machtbefugnissen ausgestatteten Kunstdiktators erobernd.' Le Brun decorates many rooms and palaces, among these Colbert's 'Capella Castelli' or Chateau 'de Seaux', 1670 - 1674? [Unfortunately destroyed]. The engraving here offered by Kleinschmidt was made after Audran's engraving of Le Brun's fresco painted ceiling of Colbert's chapel. The death of Colbert, Le Brun's benefactor, meant the end of a glorious career in which Le Brun embraced and executed all forms of art [paintings, fresco's, interior decorating, furniture, silver, gold, gobelins, ironwork, marquetterie work, etc.] Le Brun is the architect of a uniform style of art of the epoch that is today known as 'Louis XIV'.: See also Guilmard, pp. 76 - 78: Hymans, comp. pp. 190 - 194: Berlin, 4023 & comp. 4022: Thieme Becker, vol. XX, p. 462: The engraver Jakob Johann Kleinschmidt, copperengraver from Augsburg, [1687/8?] where he died September 1772, 85 years old. 'Tätig für die Verleger J.G.Hertel und Jerem. Wolff in Augsburg ...': Ch. Le Blanc, vol. II, item 1 'Dieu le Père au milieu d'une Gloire d'Anges. Plafond. 5 grandes feuilles.': Originally engraved by Girard Audran in 1681 here reengraved by Kleinschmidt, around 1720, original engr. inscription 'Le Pere eternel porté sur les aîles des Anges ... Peint a fresque dans la voûte de la Chapelle du Chasteau de Seaux, par Mr. Le Brun ... et gravé par Girard Audran 1681.': Hymans, comp. p. 70: Berlin 4023 with a variant engraved text below the plate, indicating Kleinschmidt not only as engraver, but also as designer / draughtsman and publisher. The engraving depicts God the father in Heaven, surrounded by a halo of light, in the central engraving, looking at us, surrounded by a host of winged angels, who are all sitting on or are in the vicinity of a monumental marble ballustrade that runs all round the engraving, in a few places obscured by angels or clouds. Excellent impressions of the plates, very striking dark / light contrasts. A beautifully composed scene.‎
