Nine volumes bound as five, complete. One of the great early attempts at a universal catalogue raisonnÈ of prints. Includes an important introduction and extensive bibliographical notes on hundreds of artists. Volumes 1-2, German school; volumes 3-4, Italian school; volumes 5-6, Dutch and Flemish school; volumes 7-8, French school; volume 9, English school. Complete with the rare 38-page index to the first six volumes, published later and often missing (indexes to volumes 7 to 9 are included in the regular pagination of those volumes, and are of course present). Additional manuscript index to volumes 1-2, surely done years before printed index was published. The first 40 pages of volume I supply the earliest critical bibliography of general works on prints, with many works described in exhaustive detail. The ninth volume, present here, is very rare: even Cicognara didn't have it, and apparently didn't know about it. 8vo. Bound in contemporary tree calf (first volume bound in matching, but slightly darker, calf). Light wear to bindings, but very attractive. Various indexes added in manuscript on flyleaves and inserted leaves in a contemporary hand. Internally clean. A very good set. Published over the course of eleven years by three publishers in three countries, complete sets are very rare. Brunet III, 357; Bourcard 81: "Nous estimons trËs particuliËrement cet ouvrage.... Il y a beaucoup de renseignements et une longue introduction de 80 pages qu'on ne saurait lire sans en tirer profit. Il est assez difficile de trouver l'ouvrage complet. L'Ecole Anglaise, tome IX, paru beaucoup plus tard manque souvent." Cicognara 262, citing only the first 8 volumes. Condition of this 1st edition is good antiquarian. The black cloth covers are a little worn some corner rubbing spine a bit faded with some pulling at the top interior clean and unmarked. This unusual book is a very early example of a graphic novel told entirely in engraved woodcut illustrations without text except for an introduction and a postscript �A review of Block Books and Stories in Woodcuts. � It shows/tells the fictionalized story of Bikini Island in the South Seas and the devastation that came to its inhabitants at the end of WWII with the advent of the nuclear age. The woodcuts are striking and graphic sharp and clear in a recognizably mid-century style quite reminiscent of Rockwell Kent who lends his name and introduction to the book. Toutes les planches sont à grandes marges, en bel état, sans rousseurs. Les pages de texte imprimées sur papier plus fin présentent des rousseurs éparses. Henri Hymans, né à Anvers, décédé à Bruxelles, lithographe, dirigea le Cabinet des Estampes de la Bibliothèque Royale Belge, puis Conservateur en chef de la même bibliothèque. Reliure modeste, ouvrage peu courant.

Original plate in good condition). LES MAITRES DE L'AFFICHE, prestigieuse publication d'art, éditée par l'atelier de lithographie Chaix, dont la parution s'étala de décembre 1895 à novembre 1900. Chaque livraison comportait 4 planches de reproduction en chromolithographie d'une remarquable qualité d'impression des plus belles affiches illustrées des grands artistes français et étrangers (auxquelles il faut ajouter 16 planches de lithographies originales offertes en prime aux abonnés). Lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, fut organisée la première exposition rétrospective dévolue à l'affiche, celle-ci devait valider la reconnaissance officielle d'appartenance de l'affiche au monde de l'art. Jules Chéret (1836-1932) y sera sacré '' Maître de l'affiche '', c'est aussi à cette date que Seurat commencera à collectionner les affiches de Chéret.
