‎DRESSED TO KILL Unique Manuscript Screenplay Archive for the 1946 Universal Studios SHERLOCK HOLMES film adaptation based on Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Scandal In Bohemia" and "The Adventure of the Dancing Men."‎

‎Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1946. Doyle A. Conan. DRESSED TO KILL here bearing the initial later discarded title "Prelude To Murder". Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1946. This unique film studio screenplay archive consists of THREE original screenplays. 1. A "First Revised Draft" dated January 3rd 1946 the screenwriter's original carbon copy typescript unannotated consisting of 94pp of onion-skin paper. Brad-bound in original drab brown Universal Studios covers which are a little brittle and chipped else Very Good bearing the stamped production number 7337. 2. Complete 78pp brad-bound shooting script consisting of a mix of original ribbon-copy typescript and studio-mimeographed white pages dated January 16th 1946 with production number 7337 stamped on the cover. This remarkable writer's draft contains extensive author-revised annotations emendations revisions and additions throughout. This is accomplished via a cut-and-paste the insertion of additional leaves and new dialogue and description scrawled on the versos an exceptional artifact which boldly captures the revision process of this last entry in the Sherlock Holmes' Universal Studios film series. Among the many dialogue changes one can actually see the last minute insertion of the famous line "Elementary Dear Watson" amid overall delicious and delightful artistic tweaking. The front cover has been neatly reinforced with tape and bears the original penciled filing notation indicating that this particular script is the copy from which the final draft was produced. 3. Dated April 25th 1946 the complete original studio-mimeographed self-wrapper final post-production dialogue continuity script bound with two brads at the top. In Very Good condition. The title DRESSED TO KILL refers to the film's wily femme fatale Hilda Courtney played by Patricia Morison an homage to Irene Adler from "A Scandal In Bohemia" complete with a familiar misdirection trick which Hilda uses to fool Watson into revealing a hidden location. The plot is an amalgam of several Holmes stories but also draws from other plots in the Universal Sherlock film canon: a convicted thief in Dartmoor Prison hides stolen Bank of England printing plates inside three music boxes -- leading to the murder or attempted murder of their owners using the central device of a secret code which of course only Holmes can brilliantly break. Starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in their final film together DRESSED TO KILL opened on June 7th 1946 to excellent reviews but also to rumors that it was to be the last of the Universal Sherlock films; by October of that year Producer Roy William Neill truly the visionary of the film series died and that signaled the end of one of the most successful franchises in Universal Studios history. Unique. Please see the other Universal Sherlock scripts we have in stock. Signed. Original Wraps. Very Good. Script. Universal Studios Paperback‎

‎PURSUIT TO ALGIERS Original Heavily Annotated Screenplay for the 1945 Universal Studios SHERLOCK HOLMES Film Adaptation‎

‎Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1945. Doyle A. Conan Leonard Lee screenwriter. PURSUIT TO ALGIERS here bearing the initial title "The Fugitive." Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1945. Dated July 26th 1945 Leonard Lee's complete brad-bound studio mimeographed draft script production number #7309 stamped on the cover consists of 113pp of typescript bearing numerous penciled revisions emendations and additions - along with another 20pp of massively hand-corrected typescript which clearly had contained so many penciled changes that the pages had to be retyped. These remarkably annotated pages have been appended to the rear of the screenplay creating a 133pp comprehensive look at the evolution of the script. Given the fragile nature of WW2-era scripts this example is in excellent original condition very good indeed the pages are a little soft with some very light edge-wear and tears. As fully marked up as any script in our nearly complete Universal Studio archive. PURSUIT TO ALGIERS set almost entirely on a passenger ship required elaborate sets and thus became the series's most expensive production; it premiered at the Rialto Theatre in New York on October 26th 1945. The twelve Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Pictures during the years 1942-1946 are legend; they are surely the best known screen-adapted adventures of English Literature's most iconic character and Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are still cherished despite our current superb 21st century film and TV adaptations as the definitive Holmes and Watson. A treasure for the fan of the Universal Sherlock Series. Please see our other scripts from the same archive. Signed. Original Wraps. Very Good. Script. Universal Studios Paperback‎

‎TERROR BY NIGHT Unique Manuscript Screenplay Archive for the 1945-6 original Universal film SHERLOCK HOLMES adaptation based on Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Empty House."‎

‎Burbank California: Universal Studios 1945. Doyle A. Conan Frank Gruber screenwriter. TERROR BY NIGHT. Burbank: Universal Studios 1945-6. This unique film studio screenplay archive consists of FOUR studio scripts: two original writer's draft manuscripts the final revised shooting script and the final dialogue and continuity script. In short a treasure trove of primary material relating to one of the most endearing and enduring film series of the 1940s. The twelve Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Pictures during the years 1942-1946 are legend; they are surely the best known screen-adapted adventures of English Literature's most iconic character and Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are still cherished as the definitive Holmes and Watson. 1. Dated July 2nd 1945 Frank Gruber's complete 113pp original typed carbon copy manuscript labeled "File Copy" accomplished on onion-skin paper brad-bound and housed in original drab brown studio covers production number 7322 with each leaf rubber-stamped "Contract File Copy" in red block letters. The cover is edge-worn but the contents are Very Good indeed. This copy belonged to Tom McKnight penciled signature so stating who served as the Universal Studios Sherlock Holmes technical adviser throughout the entire run of the series. 2. Dated September 29th 1945 Frank Gruber's complete 93pp corrected carbon copy manuscript cover-titled in pencil which includes brad-bound in at the rear two studio-mimeographed sets of heavily screenwriter-corrected white revision pages dated 10/4/1945 and 10/8/1945. Overall Very Good. 3. Dated October 1st 1945 a 93pp studio-mimeographed shooting script consists of both studio-issued white pages and revised blue pages. This copy belonged to Marion Pecht penciled signature who appears to have been Universal's secretary in charge of file copies. The studio covers are in excellent condition just one small chip contents fine. 4. Dated January 14th 1946 the complete original studio-mimeographed self-wrapper final post-production dialogue continuity script bound with two brads at the top. In Very Good condition. Although this film was inspired by Conan Doyle's "Adventure of the Empty House" in its characterization of Colonel Sebastian Moran and the use of an air gun as a murder weapon screenwriter Frank Gruber created what essentially was an original story and screenplay. Gruber's prior film credits included "Northern Pursuit" 1943 with Errol Flynn and "Johnny Angel" the 1945 Crime Noir starring George Raft. He was also one of the most prolific pulp magazine short story writers of the era. The producer of TERROR BY NIGHT was Howard Benedict from RKO's Saint and Falcon series. The director and executive producer was Roy William Neill who was inarguably the guiding force behind the last nine films in the series. TERROR BY NIGHT unapologetically borrowed from both of Alfred Hitchcock's train-set thrillers "The 39 Steps" 1936 and "The Lady Vanishes" 1938 and Roy William Neill's interpretation of these classics perhaps was the reason TERROR BY NIGHT is one of the best films in the series. While some critics pan the final entries in the series claiming it was all downhill TERROR BY NIGHT was surely one of the tightest best-plotted and most atmospheric of the Universal Sherlocks. TERROR BY NIGHT opened on February 8th 1946 to excellent reviews for a change and the favorable reaction by a thrilled public as usual. A unique archive a unique opportunity for the collector. ‎THE HOUSE OF FEAR Original 1944 First Draft Script for the Universal Studios film adaptation of A. Conan Doyle's 1892 Sherlock Holmes story "The Five Orange Pips"‎

‎Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1944. Doyle A. Conan Roy Chanslor screenwriter. THE HOUSE OF FEAR here bearing the initial later discarded title "The Murder Club." Based on the short story "The Five Orange Pips" published in THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOMES in 1892. Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1944. Dated April 4th 1944 Roy Chanslor's complete first draft 111pp original typed carbon copy manuscript is accomplished on onion-skin paper brad-bound and housed in original drab brown studio covers production number 7234 with each leaf rubber-stamped "Contract File Copy" in red block letters save for a 4pp neatly inserted set of revisions pages 80-83 which boast a few penciled notations. Given the fragile nature of WW2-era scripts this example is in excellent original condition very good indeed. If not a unique survival this "Contract File Copy" would certainly never have existed in more than a few copies circulated in-house. WITH: a studio-mimeographed copy of the final continuity and dialogue script for THE HOUSE OF FEAR complete and dated July 26th 1944. THE HOUSE OF FEAR was released in New York on March 16th 1945 to positive reviews. Producer and director Roy William Neill who directed 11 of the 12 Universal Holmes movies is often praised for the moody feel of this particular movie which many consider more Victorian in feeling and tone than the first few films in the series. Screenwriter Roy Chanslor "Johnny Guitar" is occasionally given some credit for the general critical opinion that this is one of the better Universal Sherlock scripts. ‎Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1944. A. Conan Doyle Bertram Millhauser screenwriter. THE PEARL OF DEATH. Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1944. This unique film studio screenplay archive consists of THREE original manuscripts: a preliminary revised draft the final revised shooting script and the final dialogue and continuity script. In short a treasure trove of primary material relating to one of the most endearing and enduring film series of the 1940s. 1. Complete original studio-mimeographed brad-bound early draft script consisting of 108pp on studio-issued pink sheets dated March 21st 1944 and bearing production number 7189. Penciled signature on the cover of Marion Pecht a secretary at Universal who appears to have been in charge of file copies. There are no other annotations. In Near Fine condition. 2. Complete original studio-mimeographed brad-bound shooting script consisting of 112pp on studio-issued white and blue revision pages dated March 28th 1944 with production number 7189 stamped on the cover. Also with Marion Pecht's ownership signature on the cover. No other annotations. The card covers are brittle and chipped as usual but contents are fine. 3. Dated July 19th 1944 the complete original studio-mimeographed self-wrapper final post-production dialogue continuity script bound with two brads at the top. In Very Good condition. THE PEARL OF DEATH was loosely adapted from Doyle's "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" originally published in THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES in 1904 and featured the signature device of "The Borgia Pearl" hidden within one of six identical plaster busts of Napoleon but also in Universal Studios fashion it added a killer known as the "Creeper" who is probably the best-drawn villain in the series after Professor Moriarty. The film opened in New York on August 25th 1944 to both popular and critical acclaim. Screenwriter Millhauser also wrote four other Universal Sherlock screenplays: THE WOMAN IN GREEN SHERLOCK HOLMES IN WASHINGTON SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH and THE SPIDER WOMAN clearly the favored writer in the series. ‎THE WOMAN IN GREEN Unique Manuscript Screenplay Archive for the 1945 Universal Studios SHERLOCK HOLMES film adaptation based on characters by A. Conan Doyle‎

‎Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1945. Doyle A. Conan. THE WOMAN IN GREEN here bearing the initial later discarded title "Invitation To Death". Los Angeles: Universal Studios 1944. This unique film studio screenplay archive consists of THREE original scripts. 1. Bertram Millhauser's undated First Draft a complete 103pp brad-bound working script bearing Universal Studios Production Number 7290 and sporting penciled cover annotations: a remarkable original ribbon copy typescript accomplished on ordinary yellow typing paper with 44pp of annotations emendations revisions and marginal production suggestions. This appears to be Executive Producer Howard Benedict's copy with his name penciled on the cover page; Benedict had been the producer for RKO's Saint and Falcon series during the 1930s and served with a brief hiatus as Executive Producer of the Universal Sherlock Holmes series from the very first installment to the last. Our belief is that these notations are most likely in Benedict's hand as we have several other Sherlock scripts with Millhauser's hand-corrections with which to compare. In Very Good condition. 2. Dated December 21st 1944 a 105pp brad-bound mimeographed draft script on studio-supplied ordinary pink paper also stamped with production number 7290. This copy appears to have belonged to Marion Pecht penciled signature who from our experience likely served as Universal Studios secretary in charge of file copies. The first and last pages have minor tape mends else Very Good. 3. Dated February 28th 1945 the complete original studio-mimeographed self-wrapper final post-production dialogue continuity script bound with two brads at the top bearing the final chosen title of THE WOMAN IN GREEN. Generally in Very Good condition a few tiny tears and chips. THE WOMAN IN GREEN was the 9th installment in the Universal Studios Sherlock Holmes series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. It was among the most grim and gruesome of the series; this exact original first draft by Bertram Millhauser was flatly turned down by the Breen Office with a heated objection to the plot device of Moriarty murdering little girls a problem however which was an easy fix for Millhauser who simply increased the age of the victims. Because of the film's darker tone Henry Daniell was cast to play a cold and distant Moriarty and bumbling Inspector Lestrade was replaced with Inspector Gregson played by a more serious Matthew Boulton. Also in keeping with the horror elements Nigel Bruce's buffoonery was minimized and toned down. The title role went to Hillary Brooke as the seductive yet twisted Lydia Marlowe. THE WOMAN IN GREEN opened in New York on June 15th 1945. The evil duo of Hillary Brooke and Henry Daniell combined with a plot featuring paranoid hypnosis and Ripper-like victims with missing fingers made this one of the more distinctive Sherlock Holmes Universal films. Unique. Please see the other Universal Sherlock scripts we have in stock. . Signed. Original Wraps. Very Good. Script. Universal Studios paperback‎

‎The Return of Sherlock Holmes Original screenplay for the 1929 film‎

‎Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1929. Early Treatment script for the 1929 film the first Sherlock Holmes film to have been produced with sound and the first to include the Holmes utterance "Elementary my dear Watson" a phrase never used by Doyle though that statement regrettably does not appear in this draft. The first known treatment was written by Oliver P. Garrett followed by this one scripted by F. Hugh Herbert and the final writing credits went to Garrett Fort and director Basil Dean. This treatment differs substantially from the finished film and is more faithful to Doyle's source material. A rare surviving artifact from the great detective's earliest days on the screen. Tall side-stitched self wrappers noted as an "Outline Treatment" on the front wrapper rubber-stamped project No. 1491 and MASTER FILE dated May 21 1929 with a credit for screenwriter Herbert. 52 leaves mixed original and carbon typescript on yellow stock with a few holograph pencil annotations on the first leaf including "1st Rough Draft." ‎The Sentries Original screenplay for an unproduced film‎

The story of a small contingent of militant mercenaries who attempt to stir up a conflict between Cuba and the United States by piloting a hostile decoy Navy ship into enemy waters off Key West only to be thwarted by the actual Navy and a few well-meaning American citizens taken hostage. No doubt mirroring some of the public's concerns at the time given the tenuous peace established by the Cuban Missile Crisis the film remained unproduced perhaps considered too sensationalist or close to home. ‎Kuhle Wampe oder Wem gehort die Welt Who Owns the World Whither Germany Original poster for the 1932 film‎

‎Germany: Kinematrade 1933. Vintage US poster for the 1932 German communist propaganda film "Kuhle Wampe oder Wem gehort die Welt" The subtitle is seen here under the English translation "Whither Germany." Circa 1933 as identified by the name of the Philadelphia theatre on the poster. The last and arguably most important communist film of the Weimar era "Kuhle Wampe oder" is according to screenwriter Brecht a "Collective Presentation" that tells the tale of a family in early 1930s Berlin. After the son is prolongedly unemployed he commits suicide and the family is forced to relocate to a shantytown known as "Kuhle Wampe" or "Empty Stomach." Created under severely limited material conditions with filming constantly being broken up by the Weimar government's paramilitary SA agency the film attempts to depict archetypes of the times including an intellectual clash on a subway between members of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Banned first by the failing Weimar Republic and subsequently by the Nazi Reich the film was believed to have been lost until it reappeared over 20 years later in East Germany in 1958. This poster likely originates from screenings held in November 1933 by an unknown pro-communist organization in Philadelphia at the short lived left-leaning Philkino theater. A US screening of this film dating before the film's disappearance and only just after the very beginnings of Hitler's rise to power makes this poster not only very scarce but one of significant historical value. The poster touting "Kuhle Wampe" as "The Film Hitler Burned" features an image of a man with a hammer and sickle attacking two snakes that form the Nazi swastika and touts the involvement of members of the "Labor Sports Union" in the film. 9.5 x 13 inches letterpress on pale faded pink stock. Very Good condition with a couple of tiny chips at the extremities and moderate creasing. Kinematrade unknown‎
