Faulkner William novel; Stephen Roberts director; Oliver HP. Garrett screenwriter; Miriam Hopkins William Gargan Jack La Rue
The Story of Temple Drake Collection of four original photographs from the 1933 film
Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures 1933. Collection of four vintage studio still photographs from the 1933 film. "Return to Natl-Kline Poster Co" and "26140" stamps on the verso. Based on the highly controversial 1931 novel "Sanctuary" by William Faulkner. Remade in 1961 as "Sanctuary" directed by Tony Richardson and starring Lee Remick and Yves Montand. Wealthy neurotic and reckless Southern belle Temple Drake Miriam Hopkins is abducted raped and forced into prostitution by the violent bootlegger Trigger Jack La Rue. Every bit as controversial as the source material the film's depiction of the assault was graphic and shocking even among films of the era. George Raft then under contract to Paramount was assigned the role of Trigger but found the part so repulsive he went to battle with the studio in a suit that nearly cost him his career. Along with the same year's equally sensational "Baby Face" directed by Alfred E. Green and starring Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent "The Story of Temple Drake" was directly responsible for the stricter enforcement of the Production Code beginning the next year bringing the pre-Code era to a close. An extremely rare film until very recently unavailable for decades outside of 16mm bootlegs with only one known nitrate print in storage at UCLA the film was restored by the Museum of Modern Art and re-premiered at the TCM Classic Film Festival in 2011. A high-definition digital restoration was released by the Criterion Collection in 2019. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus creasing largely in margins and corners some edgewear and two with closed tears one just enters image. Complete collation details available on request. Criterion Collection 1006. Grant US. Paramount Pictures unknown
