Friedkin William director; Bill Gold poster design; William Peter Blatty screenwriter; Ellen Burstyn Max von Sydow Lee J. Cob
The Exorcist Original poster maquette for the 1973 film
Burbank CA: Warner Brothers 1972. Original maquette demonstrating an early poster design for the 1973 film featuring a vintage silver gelatin photograph of the legendary streetlit scene of Father Merrin's first arrival to Georgetown in the film mounted to the poster. A minimal design without the credits information seen in the completed original "purple style" poster variant and with a proposed but ultimately unrealized release date of Christmas Day shown at the bottom margin. This maquette compares both to the "purple style" poster in its use of said purple text but also to the original black and white "special poster" design both in size and compositional austerity. The "special poster" measured 25 x 19 inches as opposed to the standard 27 x 41 inches for the one sheet and stated nothing but the film's title and the stark photo of Father Merrin. Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty and written for the screen by Blatty. One of the great genre films of the 1970s that accomplished the uncommon feat of being an over-the-top sensation upon its release and gaining subsequent status as a classic with a strangeness and depth supplied by Ellen Burstyn and Max von Sydow that only increases with repeated viewings. Another distinction of was that it walked away with two Oscars including Best Screenplay for Blatty along with eight nominations including Best Picture a feat nearly unheard for a horror film. Set in Washington DC and shot on location in Washington DC notably Georgetown University New York City and Mosul Iraq. 18 x 12.5 inches mounted on a 30 x 20 inch mat. Black with the vintage black and white photo of Father Merrin affixed at the center and a hand painted release date. Title letters are hand cut from purple paper and affixed in place. Good condition with water damage to the bottom three inches of the mat and with soil and loss of glue adhesion to the white mat. Archivally matted and framed in a museum-quality frame with UV glass. National Film Registry. Clover "Men Women and Chainsaws. Warner Brothers unknown

Friedkin William director producer; Walon Green screenwriter; Georges Arnaud novel
Sorcerer Original screenplay for the 1977 film
Universal City CA: Universal Pictures 1976. Early Draft script for the 1977 film. At 200 pages this draft is 36 pages longer than the longest of the three we have encountered meaning almost certainly that it is a First Draft or very close.<br/><br/>The plot of William Friedkin's suspense thriller originated with the same Georges Arnaud novel that inspired Henri-Georges Clouzot's French suspense classic "The Wages of Fear" 1953. Roy Scheider Bruno Cremer Francisco Rabal and Amidou play four men who for various reasons cannot return to their own countries. They end up in a dismal South American town where an American oil company is seeking out courageous drivers willing to haul nitroglycerin over 200 miles of treacherous terrain. The four stateless men have nothing to lose and besides they'll be paid $10000 apiece and be granted legal citizenship if they survive. The suspense is almost unbearable at times even outdistancing the tension level of "The Wages of Fear" in certain scenes in particular a famous set piece wherein one of the trucks must cross a rope bridge in the middle of the Amazon-and in the middle of a monsoon. Nominated for an Academy Award. <br/><br/>Gray titled wrappers. Title page present undated with credits for screenwriter Green and novelist Arnaud. 200 leaves xerographically duplicated. M Original double weight photograph from the 1931 film
Berlin: Nero-Film AG 1931. Vintage oversize double weight photograph from the 1931 film. Based on the true story of psychopathic serial killer Hans Beckert nicknamed the "Vampire of Dusseldorf" here played by Peter Lorre. A brilliant image from this crime thriller classic in which the search is on for Lorre. <br/><br/>Lang's first sound film Lorre's breakthrough role and the film Lang considered to be his masterpiece-an assertion that has found much agreement since. The mood atmosphere and lighting foreshadow film noir and Lang's use of sound though primitive technologically still makes a powerful psychological impact. <br/><br/>So strongly regarded was the film that MGM producer Irving Thalberg assembled his writers and directors for a screening and told them they needed to be making films of this caliber. Banned in Germany in 1934 when the Nazis came into power at which point Lorre and Lang both of partial Jewish ancestry fled the country. The expressionistic art direction visible here the uncredited work of Edgar G. Ulmer would also serve as the basis of Ulmer's later directorial work in Hollywood where he would make some of the most creative and classic noir-style films. De Felitta was present during the investigation with lead researcher and parapsychologist Dr. Barry Taff who served as technical advisor on "The Entity" as well as being represented in the film by the character Gene Kraft. "The Entity" is one of the few possession films that ends with White Science and Black Magic in a draw. Critics of the time dismissed the film but it still became something of a cult classic that evoked "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist." Screenwriter Frank De Felitta was born 1921 in the Bronx. He served as a pilot right out of high school in WWII and returned to New York in 1945 where he began writing scripts. His first produced work was for the radio thriller series "The Whistler" and once established he turned to television writing producing and directing documentaries receiving Emmy nominations in 1963 and 1968. By the early 70's De Felitta was working on film scripts with author Max Ehrlich. His first novel "Oktoberfest" 1973 was a thriller that made him enough money to finance time needed to write the bestseller horror story about reincarnation the hit film "Audrey Rose" 1975 and later its sequel "For Love of Audrey Rose" 1982. He went on to write the film adaptation of the same story in 1977 starring Anthony Hopkins as Audrey's father and Marsha Mason as Ivy's mother directed by Robert Wise. 1st Draft Screenplay: Blue untitled wrappers with holograph pencil notation. Paris: Union Artistic Films distributor; F. P. S. Films production company circa 1927. First edition. Double grande affiche 63 X 94 inches; 1600 x 2385 mm. Designed by G. Elizabeth. Two sheets restored and linen backed. The sheets are barely out of alignment; a couple tears laid down including one with a tiny bit of loss in the upper-left scene; a few old wrinkles flattened out; touch of rubbing; faint discoloration along the folds possibly with some minor touchups a couple instances of minor fold separation; a few faint tiny splashes visible in the lower-right margin. Presents as near fine. Union Artistic Films distributed four films starring Lili Damita produced by F. P. S. Films during the 1927-1928 season according to a two-page advertisement in the September 1927 issue of Cinegraphie. They were: Papillon d'or Der goldene Schmetterling 1926 directed by Michael Curtiz IMDb ID: tt0016930 La nuit nuptiale The Queen Was in the Parlour an English co-production based on a Noël Coward play 1927 directed by Graham Cutts tt0017900 La danseuse de grenade Die berühmte Frau 1927 directed by Robert Wiene tt0437864 and possibly this one under the title On ne joue pas avec l'amour Man spielt nicht mit der Liebe 1927 tt0017116. Man spielt nicht mit der Liebe is the only Lili Damita film we could identify produced by F. P. S. Films to co-star Werner Krauss. Using IMDb's collaborator search the only additional entries are Pabst's Secrets of a Soul Geheimnisse einer Seele produced by Neumann-Filmproduktion which starred Krauss and apparently featured Damita in an uncredited role and a ghost entry for Une femme dans la nuit created using the minimal information available in this poster from the Heritage Auctions listing. We cannot say with certainty that any of the assumptions made in the course of this catalog description are accurate and we still have a difficult time swallowing that Pabst who would be fresh off Joyless Street would not receive mention on the promotional material of any of his projects. All that said given the information available Une femme dans la nuit is either a completely ignored and immediately forgotten prestige project featuring two popular actors or was an alternate title from one of just two lost Pabst films. Either way it's still one hell of a decorative piece. Last year Heritage Auctions also sold a French grande one sheet half this size for this film under the same title with no additional release or production information. Deutsche Kinemathek's Lost Film database ID 986. #10012. Union Artistic Films (distributor); F. P. S. Films (production company), unknown

Gance Abel director screenwriter; Albert Dieudonne Antonin Artaud Gina Manes starring
Napoleon Original program for the 1927 film
France: Cine France 1927. Original French program for the 1927 film with a flyer for the world premiere at the Palais Garnier in Paris laid in. One of the late masterpieces of the silent era following Napoleon's early life through his appointment as Commander in Chief of the Army and invasion of Italy one of six films director Abel Gance planned about the life of the French statesmen and the only one he completed. The film is notable for the many innovative and experimental techniques Gance used uncommon in the silent era including location shooting fast cutting close up hand held and point of view shots multiple camera set ups in-camera movement and visual effects such as superimposition film tinting and split screen or mosaic shots. Most famously the film helped pioneer truly widescreen viewing as Gance created a technique later referred as Polyvision which required three projectors to run film shot from three different cameras simultaneously to achieve a 4:1 aspect ratio for the film's climatic battle sequence although seams between the screens would remain visible. After only showing at a handful of theatres the film which originally ran over four hours was severely cut when it was acquired by MGM with only the middle section of the triptych being retained the other two sections remaining mostly unseen until the film was fully restored in the early 1980s. 10 x 13 inches bound with a string binding. Owner blindstamp to the title page. Wrappers Very Good with a few short closed tears and light chipping now encapsulated in mylar. Interior pages bright and about Fine with light soil.
