Hollywood: RKO Radio Pictures 1947. Final Script for the 1947 film. Based on the 1937 Finnish play "Juurakon Hulda" by Hella Wuolijoki under the pen name Juhani Tervapaa. A feelgood rags-to-riches story in which Loretta Young plays a farm girl who is robbed on her way to the big city and who after working as a maid in the household of a US Representative finds herself elected a US Representative herself as well. While originally intended as a vehicle for actress Ingrid Bergman Young was given the leading role after rumors circulated that Joseph Cotten was having an affair with Bergman. Young won an Academy Award for Best Actress for the part exclaiming "at long last!" as she received it. "The Farmer's Daughter" was nominated for one other Academy Award as well. Jimmy Stewart plays an idealistic soldier who convinces a Broadway star Margaret Sullavan to pretend they're dating in order to impress his other soldier friends. Meanwhile Sullivan's manager Walter Pidgeon has always been in love with her and objects to the pair's closeness even as they decide to get married before Stewart is shipped out to France. Stewart and Sullivan pull off surprisingly believable roles for a plot of such sickly sweetness in this their second on-screen pairing. The third film based on Burnet's "Saturday Evening Post" story the first two being the 1919 George Melford silent film "Pettigrew's Girl" and Richard Wallace's part-talkie "The Shopworn Angel" 1928 starring Gary Cooper. London: The Archers / Eagle-Lion 1946. Original UK Program for the 1946 film released in the US as "Stairway to Heaven." SIGNED by director Michael Powell on page 12 just above the photo next to his biographical sketch. While it is certainly arguable that the greatest Powell-Pressburger film is a 10-way tie for first place "A Matter of Life and Death" is probably the most philosophically ambitious of their masterpieces. David Niven is a British wartime aviator who unwittingly cheats death and must ultimately argue for his continued existence before a celestial court. In between these two events is a wildly imaginative and surreal tale told first in Technicolor on earth then in Dye-Monochrome black-and-white in heaven. This oversize program book evokes the spirit of the film beautifully with clever use of two-color processes mostly pink and blue throughout. Includes biographies and large photos of the principal actors reviews an essay about the techniques used to shoot the film and credits for the cast and crew. The credits and promotion are specific to the UK rather than international or US distribution of the film through Eagle-Lion and General Distributors. This revision contains an appropriately unusual and rather whimsical foreword by Sturges with two earlier titles "Biography of a Bum" and "The Vagrant" cited on the second and fourth leaves respectively. <br/><br/>Sturges had become a very successful Hollywood screenwriter by the late 1930s and with his screenplay for "The Biography of a Bum" wanted so much to direct the film that he offered to do the job for free. With very few exceptions notably Charlie Chaplin the notion of an established studio writer directing a film was nearly unheard of in Hollywood where writers were typically not even allowed on the set. Only the irresistible cheapness of Sturges' offer made it possible for the film to get made. <br/><br/>Over the six year period during which the script remained unproduced the title changed to "The Vagrant" then "Down with McGinty" then finally just prior to production to "The Great McGinty." It was not only a success but won Sturges an Oscar for Best Screenwriter.
