‎Lady and the Monster / The Day the Earth Caught Fire Original screenplays Forrest J. Ackerman's copy‎

‎Universal City CA: Republic Pictures / Pax Films / Universal Pictures 1961. Forrest J. Ackerman's copy of scripts from two key science fiction films bound together including original front wrappers in red buckram with Ackerman's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board. "The Lady and the Monster": Shooting script for the 1944 film. The first of three adaptations of Curt Siodmak's classic 1942 novel in which an honest hard-working scientist preserves a dead man's brain only to be remote-controlled by it. Shot by the legendary John Alton at the very peak of his work in the mid-1940s. Yellow front studio wrapper noted as SHOOTING SCRIPT at the top right dated October 13 1943 a penciled notation of the working title "The Lady and the Monster" just below the printed title noted as production No. 1194 and with credits for associate producer George Sherman and Republic Studios at the bottom. Two-page cast of characters with the actors' names added in ribbon copy type just below the character names. Title page present with credits for director Sherman and novelist Siodmak. 94 leaves mimeograph duplication with blue yellow green and pink revision pages leaves dated variously between 10/18/43 and 11/8/43. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine. "The Day the Earth Caught Fire": An early and apparently abandoned draft by director Val Guest to film his screen story for Pax Films as a five-part British serial. Guest ultimately directed the story as a feature-length movie for Pax one of the most understated and intelligent science fiction films ever made. Light green wrappers both front and rear wrappers present. The front wrapper reads: "A Five Part Serialisation of / THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE / A Val Guest Production." Just below in holograph ink and in what we would assume is Guest's hand is written "Dedicated to Brian Aldiss." We think it likely that the script was gifted to the very connected Ackerman by Guest though the provenance beyond Ackerman's ownership is unknown. 41 pages divided into five parts each beginning with a two-color memo on PAX stationery describing what will happen in the following section. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine. Buckram binding containing the two scripts is Very Good with some light scuffing and soil. Martin 413. Republic Pictures / Pax Films / Universal Pictures unknown‎

Vilgot Sjoman's controversial erotic drama utilizing both dramatic and documentary filmmaking techniques stars Sjoman's then lover actress Lena Nyman as a young theater student examining the social and political mores of 1960s Sweden and her own sexuality. Parallel is the plot of the actors and filmmakers reacting as themselves to the film they are in the process of making. Seized by customs upon entry to the US and banned from numerous US cities for sexually explicit scenes it was found in 1969 not to be obscene by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit opening the door to more frank and explicit subject matter in American film. ‎Kuhle Wampe oder Wem gehort die Welt Who Owns the World Whither Germany Original poster for the 1932 film‎

‎Germany: Kinematrade 1933. Vintage US poster for the 1932 German communist propaganda film "Kuhle Wampe oder Wem gehort die Welt" The subtitle is seen here under the English translation "Whither Germany." Circa 1933 as identified by the name of the Philadelphia theatre on the poster. <br/><br/>The last and arguably most important communist film of the Weimar era "Kuhle Wampe oder" is according to screenwriter Brecht a "Collective Presentation" that tells the tale of a family in early 1930s Berlin. After the son is prolongedly unemployed he commits suicide and the family is forced to relocate to a shantytown known as "Kuhle Wampe" or "Empty Stomach." Created under severely limited material conditions with filming constantly being broken up by the Weimar government's paramilitary SA agency the film attempts to depict archetypes of the times including an intellectual clash on a subway between members of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. <br/><br/>Banned first by the failing Weimar Republic and subsequently by the Nazi Reich the film was believed to have been lost until it reappeared over 20 years later in East Germany in 1958. This poster likely originates from screenings held in November 1933 by an unknown pro-communist organization in Philadelphia at the short lived left-leaning Philkino theater. A US screening of this film dating before the film's disappearance and only just after the very beginnings of Hitler's rise to power makes this poster not only very scarce but one of significant historical value. <br/><br/>The poster touting "Kuhle Wampe" as "The Film Hitler Burned" features an image of a man with a hammer and sickle attacking two snakes that form the Nazi swastika and touts the involvement of members of the "Labor Sports Union" in the film. <br/><br/>9.5 x 13 inches letterpress on pale faded pink stock. Very Good condition with a couple of tiny chips at the extremities and moderate creasing. Kinematrade unknown books‎

‎Smith Martin Cruz novel; Dennis Potter screenwriter; Michael Apted director; Lee Marvin William Hurt Brian Dennehy starring‎

‎Gorky Park Original screenplay actor Lee Marvin's leatherbound presentation copy with associated ephemera‎

‎Los Angeles: Eagle Associates / Orion Pictures 1983. Third Draft script and Final Shooting script for the 1983 film "Gorky Park" based on the 1981 novel by Martin Cruz Smith. Actor Lee Marvin's leather-bound presentation copy from director Michael Apted and producer Howard W. Koch Jr. bound in maroon leather with Marvin's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board and with two notable pieces of associated ephemera: a a Typed Letter Signed from Apted Koch and producer Gene Kirkwood on production stationery for the film reading "Dear Lee / Please accept this gift as a momento sic of the time we all spent together on GORKY PARK" and b an attractive greeting card from Apted and Koch with a note in holograph ink referring to the shooting location for the film which reads "Welcome to Moscow! We're glad you're here! / Best / Howard and Michael." On the rear of the envelope is a holograph pencil notation in Marvin's hand reading "From Howard Koch upon arrival in Finland." And accordingly the shooting location for the film was Finland not Moscow as "Glasnost" had not yet taken effect. In the film a very faithful rendering of Cruz-Smith's Cold War novel Marvin plays a Armand Hammer-style American businessman who is playing hell with Soviet police inspector William Hurt in a mystery that is not so much a "whodunit" as a "whydunit." An underrated and appropriately bleak entry in the Cold War cinema genre by the versatile director Apted. Maroon leather with gilt titles and rule with matching glossy endpapers. Title page present with credits for screenwriter Potter and novelist Cruz-Smith. 133 leaves Xerographically duplicated. Pages and binding about Fine. From the estate of Lee Marvin. Perry considered making the film but it was ultimately directed by Christian Marquand. This draft is credited solely to Southern though Buck Henry was ultimately given full credit for the adaptation from the novel by Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. In her memoir "Trippin' with Terry Southern: What I Think I Remember" Gail Gerber details at some length the tangle of legal problems over the publication of "Candy" in the US and abroad. Publication was poorly controlled resulting in numerous pirated editions and lawsuits involving Maurice Girodias Olympia Press Putnam and small US paperback publishers such as Lancer Greenleaf and Brandon House. She notes "Despite the popularity of the novel Hollywood was always leery about getting involved with properties that have 'clouded title' so it was no surprise that Frank Perry gave up on the idea of directing the film version of 'Candy' much to Terry's disappointment."
