Though Wong received third billing behind Marlene Dietrich and Clive Brook her portrayal of Hui Fei is universally regarded as a masterclass in acting. Hui Fei is a fiercely independent woman navigating a train ride from Peking to Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War which is hijacked by rebel forces. Her performance often overshadowed Dietrich's. One of the finest and best remembered of the 1930s musicals if for no other reason than the introduction by Ross and Hope his first feature role of the classic song ""Thanks for the Memory"" it won the Academy Award. Martha Raye who did her own stunts in a raucously entertaining number was ingeniously cast as W. C. Fields' daughter in his last film for Paramount. Everyone shone in their musical moments in a story which concerned a race between two ocean liners from which the new S.S. Gigantic had a big radio broadcast emitting you see the turbine engine worked on radio waves is the explanation!. Amongst the numbers broadcast and lavishly staged were Kirsten Flagstad performing Wagner in full opera regalia. The radio audience was not able to see the extravagant finale concerning the history of dance but the film audience could. One of the finest classic film noir titles and written by the master of the genre Raymond Chandler. The story involved a war vet who returns home to see his wife with another man. She is murdered and he is the prime suspect. The Blue Dahlia is a nightclub where much of the action takes place. Chandler initially had the returning vet Bendix as the murderer but the patriotic atmosphere of the time would not permit a war vet to be seen in that light so he had to rewrite the story and character. William Bendix as Buzz is at center Alan Ladd as Johnny Morrison to left Hugh Beaumont as George and Tom Powers as Capt. Hendrickson. Very minor corner wear and some with tiny pinholes at corners about fine. </em></p><p>When Buster Crabbe lost out to fellow Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller in playing Tarzan at MGM Paramount came up with this competitive story. It was Buster's first feature film and the studio photographers wasted little time in presenting photography of his physique which bared nearly all and would not be tolerated once the Production Code was enforced.</p><p>This series of images introduced moviegoers to Crabbe. ‎No binding. Very Good. Photo Vintage original 10 x 8"" 25 x 20 cm. single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo USA. Born in New Orleans the stunning and sultry Lamour was crowned Miss New Orleans in 1931 then became a band singer and radio performer. She worked her way up with bit roles in films before her breakthrough role in THE JUNGLE PRINCESS. The film was released at Christmas 1936 and she became an iconic film figure wearing her sarong supposedly designed by uncredited Edith Head. Paramount had a gold mine and promoted Lamour in a host of sarong-type wear throughout 1937 no matter the period or setting of the films she was making including SWING HIGH SWING LOW THRILL OF A LIFETIME and the historical musical HIGH WIDE AND HANDSOME. Dorothy and her baby crocodile appear to have been photographed during production of THE JUNGLE PRINCESS. Still is coded P2156-458. Paramount copyright at bottom. Card is in impeccable condition fine. </em></p><p><em>Tabu</em> was the great German director F. W. Murnau's last film he died shortly before its premiere due to a car accident and one of the final masterpieces of silent film. Murnau traveled to Bora Bora with documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty with whom he worked on some early versions of the script but disputes arose and Flaherty bowed out. When Frankie is sprung out of prison after 14 years he expects his bootlegging partner who has since made good to stick to their 50/50 agreement. Noll Turner has no intention of doing that even though torch singer femme fatale Kay does her best to intervene. Their first film together Douglas and Lancaster would form a company and make six more films. Lancaster appears on this poster with Liz Scott. Set of 12 vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm black-and-white photos one with mimeographed text on verso three with the film's title stamped on verso overall just about fine. Josef von Sternberg's first talking film. Some historians credit his importance in the evolution of gangster films with his UNDERWORLD 1927. This was by any standard the first significant talking gangster film. It tells the story of a criminal facing execution who wants to kill the man in the next cell for being in love with his former girlfriend. Sternberg experimented with asynchronous sound effects which served to augment or supplement the visual effects or as he framed the process "To be correctly and effectively used the sound had to bring to the image a quality other than what the lens included a quality out of the range of the image. Sound had to counterpoint or compensate for the image add to it – not subtract from it." Rather than the external and complementary musical accompaniment of silent films Sternberg's scores arise organically with the mise-en-scène and form a key component of the film. The music off-screen does not recede in deference to the on-screen dialogue but competes with it. Off-screen voices comment on the visual action but are not identified visually until later in the film sequence contributing to an "unrealistic cadence" that characterizes the film's dialogue. Film historian Andrew Sarris describes it as "a startling experiment. his use of sound and music for mood effects and the very unreality of his style seems to justify the unusual density of his sound track." Sternberg also uses sound expressionistically such as the erratic start-stop of a sewing machine or the "sinister" squeaking of a dog's ball toy squeezed by the condemned criminal in the hours before his death. In 2003 Japanese film historian Komatsu Hiroshi unearthed a four-minute fragment of <em>The Case of Lena Smith</em> in Manchuria China reviving interest in the film. ‎Paramount. No binding. Near Fine. Los Angeles: Paramount 1929. Vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. Minor soiling to edges crease at bottom right corner 1929 holograph note on verso. Near fine. Rare is this image of cast with crew so many waiting to be identified with many of the top artists at Paramount Studios. The film is notable for being both the debut of Jeanette MacDonald and the first talkie film made by Ernst Lubitsch. The picture was also released in a French-language version called Parade d'amour. Maurice Chevalier thought he would never be capable of acting as a royal courtier and had to be persuaded by Lubitsch. This huge box-office hit appeared just after the Wall Street crash and did much to save the fortunes of Paramount Studios. The major players of this groundbreaking early sound musical are present in the front row including Lupino Lane Lubitsch MacDonald Chevalier and likely cinematographer Victor Milner at left behind Jeanette. He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He and Lubitsch are mentioned in the handwritten note on verso. Tom Sawyer was the first talking film adapted from Mark Twain. It starred Jackie Coogan and was directed by John Cromwell. The film was the third screen adaptation of the Twain novel following silent versions released in 1907 and 1917. The picture was made on location at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura California. The drama of three castaways all from different levels of society brought together on a deserted schooner in the ocean. Presented here are stars Dorothy Dalton and Jack Holt. Holt would go on through the 1940s as a Western and adventure actor. Dalton was a star of silents but would give up her career for marriage in 1924. Their co-star Mitchell Lewis would go on to play uncredited bits in films through the 1950s most notably as the Winkie Captain in The Wizard of Oz. Superb period design makes this card a standout. excellent condition. Tiny filled-in pinhole near top and bottom right corners FINE. unknown books‎
