‎BART, PETER‎

‎Fade out - the Calamitous Final Days of Mgm‎

‎London, Simon and Schuster. 1990, First Edition. (ISBN: 0671710605). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket which is price clipped. First UK edition. It took Kirk Kerkorian nearly 20 years to wheel and deal to the point wher all that remained of MGM was the faint meow of Leo the Lion. But the descent of that once regal movie powerhouse was occasioned by no small amount of glamour, humour and greed. In the book we are treated to the big picture of a world-class studio over the past 20 years: a time of mergers and junk bond offerings, corporate musical chairs (with Kerkorian the only constant), the selling off of the film library (twice) and the company back lot. Even the historic sets and wardrobes for many of the MGM classics went on the block. Meanwhile MGM produced a succssion of movies: some of them successful, some sleazy, too many of them flops. This is not only a bizarre drama of colourful characters propelled across an Alice-in-Wonderland landscape littered with dashed hopes and bitter betrayals, but also a powerful story of corporate demolition in the 1980's. Fine/Very Good.‎

‎HAY, PETER, WITH NUMEROUS OTHERS‎

‎Mgm: When the Lion Roars [Boxed Collector's Edition, with Filmstrip]‎

‎Atlanta: Turner Publishing, Inc, (c.1991). Collector's Edition. Hardcover First Printing. (no dust jacket; in slipcase, as issued) [book is in brand-new, flawless condition; blue cloth slipcase shows the faintest bit of surface wear, just from normal handling, but still presents as like new]. (B&W and color photographs, artwork) Lavishly-illustrated history of MGM from its beginnings through 1959. This is the "boxed Collector's Edition," so stated on a special bookplate affixed to the ffep, bearing the printed signature of Ted Turner; adjacent to the bookplate is mounted a plastic sleeve, inside which is purported to be "an authentic strip of film taken from one of the studio's two greatest movies -- Gone with the Wind or The Wizard of Oz." (In this particular case it's the latter -- a 13-frame sequence of 35mm film showing the Scarecrow, still mounted on his post, pointing the way for Dorothy (11 frames), followed by a close-up of Judy Garland (2 frames). But I'm just gonna be a purist about this, OK? Although it's unquestionably a strip of film from Wizard, its "authenticity" is a bit ersatz, since it's printed on safety film stock, hence from a print struck at least eleven years, give or take, after the film's original 1939 release, a point further emphasized by the "SAFETY FILM" designation right on the strip itself. But a bigger sin is that it's from an Eastman Color (i.e. not Technicolor) print, and therefore already has a very pinkish cast to it. I'll let you suss out the irony of this on your own.) And now, in the Credit Where Credit's Due Dept, here are the additional contributing writers to this lovely book: Woolsey Ackerman, Robert S. Birchard, David Chierichetti, Hiro Clark, Vic Cox, Lee Davis, Daniel Eagan, John Fricke, Timothy Gray, Howard Mandelbaum, Richard P. May, Michele Rubin, Merrill Shindler, Linda Sunshine, Lena Tabori, and Marc Wanamaker. [PLEASE NOTE that the ISBN which I've associated with this book was taken from a printed label that was affixed to the exterior of the slipcase at the time I acquired the book, but has subsequently come detached, and has been placed inside the back cover of the book. I have NOT used the ISBN that appears on the book itself, because it's the same as that of the regular (dust-jacketed) trade edition. This seemed to me the best way to avoid confusion, and if you've read this far you'll have no doubt about which version of the book you'll be getting.]. Fine .‎

Uncommon to get lobby cards and poster together in reasonable condition. very good Lobby cards and one sheet made to promote the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel. Despite being produced by a major movie studio and starring famous actors Leslie Caron and George Peppard the movie was a financial flop. Allen Ginsberg derided it for its two dimensional characters and shallow portrayal of the beat culture and this can be seen in the subtitles of the lobby cards such as "When the party's over and she's alone the wild Bohemian searches her soul for the answers" and "The new Bohemians took what they liked even if it was another fellow's girl.". 1960 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer unknown‎

‎Norma Shearer: A Life‎

‎New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated by (dj design) Keith Sheridan. (price-clipped) [good sound copy, light foxing/soiling to edges of text block, former owner's name and address on ffep; jacket a little scuffed and surface-worn, but no tears or other blemishes]. (B&W photographs) Biography of "the First Lady of MGM" (or, with a little more edge, "Queen of the Lot"), whose favored status at the studio, often attributed (somewhat unfairly) to the power of her husband Irving Thalberg, culminated when at the rather advanced age of 33 she won the part of Juliet in the 1936 film version of "Romeo and Juliet," released mere days before Irving kicked the bucket. Lambert, one of the great Hollywood biographers, vividly portrays the drama and complexity of Shearer's life, as he chronicles how "she was unfailingly attentive to detail, demanding that her costumes, her makeup, and, above all, her scenes, be perfect," while at the same time navigating her "highly publicized, studio-sculpted" marriage to Thalberg, and maintaining her elegant image as the "dream studio wife." And far from fading away after Thalberg's death, she continued to exercise control over her life and career, pursuing choice roles, fighting with Louis B. Mayer over control of M-G-M stock, struggling with the difficulties of motherhood, etc. (Of course, she did retire from the screen at almost the moment she hit forty, in 1942, but never mind about that.).
