‎JOAN CRAWFORD / TORCH SONG 1953‎

‎Vintage original 10 x 8" 25 x 20 cm. black-and-white double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo USA. Joan Crawford Michael Wilding Gig Young dir: Charles Walters; Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. <br /><br />After a ten-year leave from her alma-matter 1925-43 Joan Crawford returned to MGM to make a Technicolor musical. She was allowed free reign on her hair make-up and costume choices. The studio celebrated her return and newbie contract players such as Pier Angeli were excited to meet her. <br /><br />Here Angeli assists Joan with her coif during a visit. Angeli appears to be taking great care since the style is most likely achieved with hair pieces woven into Crawford's own hair. Sydney Guilaroff the stylist Crawford found in New York City in the 1930s and brought to MGM is credited with her styling. <br /><br />Immaculate photo includes the original typed information blurb on the verso the dated "June 24 1953 Advertising Administration Hollywood" approval stamp and the original penciled still number which is "1631x40" FINE. ‎LIBELED LADY 1936 Insert poster‎

‎No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 36 x 14"" 90 x 35 cm. insert poster USA. Jean Harlow William Powell Myrna Loy Spencer Tracy Walter Connolly Charley Grapewin dir: Jack Conway; MGM. One of the finest screwball comedies of the 1930s. A most popular genre this time given the opulent MGM treatment with all-star cast Cedric Gibbons' art direction and Lawrence Weingarten as producer. When a false news story about a high society woman is hatched the newspaper man his jilted fiancé and his lawyer set out to make the story true before she can sue for libel. George Oppenheimer Howard Emmett Rogers and Maurine Watkins adapted the Wallace Sullivan story which was so popular that MGM resurrected it in a remake some ten years later. Though Harlow and Powell were a couple in real life at the time audiences wanted more and more of the Powell/Loy team and this was the fifth of their 14 films together. Jean Harlow loved the costumes made for her by Dolly Tree and when she died a year after the making of this film she was entombed in the gown Tree made for her role of Gladys Benton. Poster was folded and it has now been paper-backed and cleaned. The folds have been lightly addressed. There was a 4"" 10 cm. crease just above the top third fold from the left edge in and one 2"" 5 cm. tear at the bottom margin at the lower portion of Jean Harlow's shoulder both professionally addressed. Pinholes addressed at corners VERY GOOD. unknown books‎

‎LOLITA 1962 One sheet poster‎

‎No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Vintage original 41 x 27"" 102 x 68 cm. one sheet poster USA. James Mason Shelley Winters Sue Lyon Peter Sellers Lois Maxwell dir: Stanley Kubrick; MGM. One of the most iconic movie posters of all-time. Very controversial was the novel by Vladimir Nabokov who did the adapted screenplay about a 40-something French literature professor and his obsession for the 12-year-old daughter of his landlady. Very controversial to this day is the film. The censors were after the script from day one and Lolita's age had to be raised to 14. In the end Kubrick un-credited actually wrote much of the script as presented on screen. Nevertheless it was Nabokov who received the Academy Award nomination for Best Writing - Screenplay based on material from another medium. This famous image of Sue Lyon as Lolita wearing the heart-shaped sunglasses is a portrait by Bert Stern. The image was used for publicity only; cat-eyed sunglasses were used in the film. Amongs those considered for and offered the role of Humbert were Marlon Brando David Niven Cary Grant and Errol Flynn who passed before production started. Amongs the other Lolita potentials were Joey Heatherton and Haley Mills; in both cases their well-known fathers vetoed the casting! Peter Sellers based his peculiar voice on that of Stanley Kubrick. Poster is folded and appears to be unused. There is only the minutest of edge and fold wear FINE. unknown books‎

‎No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14"" 28 x 35 cm. lobby card USA. Greta Garbo Ramon Novarro Lionel Barrymore Lewis Stone Karen Morley dir: George Fitzmaurice; MGM. One of the finest and most legendary of the Greta Garbo films. Today just the images of Garbo in her role of the infamous German spy who ended up in front of a firing squad for her work are iconic. Even in the less restricted pre-Code days censors demanded cuts in the script and even in the finished film. Stills of Garbo in a see-through gown exist yet the scene is no longer in the film. So popular was the film and Garbo -- particularly in the foreign markets -- that MGM attempted to re-release the film in 1936 but was not given approval; they had to wait three years before the Hays Office would approve the re-release in 1939. In this scene card ""He would never know of her fate"" Mata Hari has a last goodbye with her lover Alexis Navarro before she goes out to face the firing squad. ‎No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14"" 28 x 35 cm. title lobby card USA. Mae Murray John Gilbert Roy D'Arcy Tully Marshall dir: Eric von Stroheim; MGM. A classic silent film and one of the best of the genre. Also one of the most notorious because of its tempestuous production. A prince must woo a wealthy widowed dancer in order to keep her money in the country. Based on the Franz Lehar operetta and trotted out twice more in later years by MGM the problems Stroheim caused in production particularly with star Murray whose temper was equal to his and with executive Irving Thalberg were such that this would be the last film he would direct for MGM. One of the most expensive and decadent films of the silent era and orgy scene had to be severely cut for censorship reasons. Shot in 1924 Joan Crawford and Clark Gable reportedly appeared as extras. The card has a large pin hole at the top left corner which has been reinforced with archival tape on the verso. There are pin holes at the right and bottom left corners as well as a chip to the bottom left corner. There is light spotting and smudging over all the card VERY GOOD. unknown books‎

Willis as associates was the highlight of this film and of this exquisite card featuring Myrna Loy and Warner Baxter. This was the story of a crooked lawyer whose specialty is getting mob members off for their crimes. Loy plays his girlfriend but as this film is not only pre-Code for her it is also pre-Nora Charles also basically a prostitute. Her gowns were by Adrian nonetheless. Included was the new hit song by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields"" Don't Blame Me"". A classic poster of the film noir genre. An unhappily married woman and a drifter plan and carry out the murder of her husband. It is one of the best remembered most atmospheric and sexually tense films even within the restraints of the Production Code of this period genre. It took twelve years to bring the notorious James M. The film and the presentation of this poster were not typical MGM fare of the period but the studio proved themselves as adept at the noir genre as Warner Brothers. The film was in development since 1938 and was to originally star a combination of MGM top female stars of the time including Eleanor Powell Joan Crawford Virginia Bruce and Margaret Sullavan. However by 1940 the script was developed for the new reigning female stars: Judy Garland Lana Turner and Hedy Lamarr. James Stewart was given top billing as well as he had just won the Academy Award for Best Actor of 1940 as this film wrapped. The front of the herald features an artist's depiction of a 1940s-era style Ziegfeld girl -- though the actual period of the Follies was over during the 1920s. The herald opens up to a montage of photo scenes of the stars and the MGM dancers who played the Ziegfeld girls of the film. There are some small chips at the right margin. There are two small pieces of tape on the front left side margin ABOUT FINE. unknown books‎

‎Irving Thalberg: Boy Wonder to Producer Prince Auflage: Illustrated‎

‎University of California Press 09.10.2009. 504 Seiten, 15,2 x 3,6 x 22,9 cm, Gebundene Ausgabe‎

‎Hollywood in the 1920s sparkled with talent, confidence, and opportunity. Enter Irving Thalberg of Brooklyn, who survived childhood illness to run Universal Pictures at twenty; co-found Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer at twenty-four; and make stars of Lon Chaney, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, and Jean Harlow. Known as Hollywood's ?Boy Wonder,? Thalberg created classics such as Ben-Hur, Tarzan the Ape Man, Grand Hotel, Freaks, Mutiny on the Bounty, and The Good Earth, but died tragically at thirty-seven. His place in the pantheon should have been assured, yet his films were not reissued for thirty years, spurring critics to question his legend and diminish his achievements. In this definitive biography, illustrated with rare photographs, Mark A. Vieira sets the record straight, using unpublished production files, financial records, and correspondence to confirm the genius of Thalberg's methods. In addition, this is the first Thalberg biography to utilize both his recorded conversations and the unpublished memoirs of his wife, Norma Shearer. Irving Thalberg is a compelling narrative of power and idealism, revealing for the first time the human being behind the legend.
