The Big Parade Movie Program
New York: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Production 1925. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Fair. 16 pages. Illustrations color. Cover has some wear soiling. and edge tears. The Big Parade is a 1925 American silent film directed by King Vidor starring John Gilbert Rene Adore Hobart Bosworth Tom O'Brien and Karl Dane. Adapted by Harry Behn from the autobiographical novel Plumes by Laurence Stallings with titles by Joseph W. Farnham the film is about an idle rich boy who joins the US Army's Rainbow Division and is sent to France to fight in World War I becomes a friend of two working class men experiences the horrors of trench warfare and finds love with a French girl. Although other anti-war films chronologically preceded it The Big Parade is nevertheless an early film to have neither glorified the war nor ignored its human costs. It heavily influenced a many subsequent war films especially All Quiet on the Western Front 1930. The Big Parade was selected for preservation in the U. S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally historically or aesthetically significant". The program states it was sold only in theaters. The Big Parade was one of the greatest hits of the 1920s earning gross rentals of $4990000 in the United States and $1141000 overseas on a budget of $382000 during its initial release with MGM recording a profit of $3.4 million its biggest of the silent era. The domestic earnings were MGM's biggest until the release of Gone With the Wind. It played in some larger cities continually for a year or more boosting Gilbert's career and made Rene Adore a major star. The film ultimately grossed $18-$22 million in worldwide rentals and is sometimes proclaimed as the most successful film of the silent era although it is most likely this record falls to The Birth of a Nation. The film won the Photoplay Magazine Medal for best film of the year in 1925. The medal is considered the first significant annual movie award prior to the establishment of the Oscars. The film's tremendous success established Vidor as one of MGM's top directors for the rest of his career. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Production paperback

The Broadway Melody Scene Still
Hollywood: Metro Goldwyn Mayer 1929. Superb original and rare scene still for the second film to win an Oscar for Best Picture and the first all talking picture to do so. The film is the classic tale of two sisters working in vaudeville who fall in love with the same song and dance man. The film starred Bessie Love who was terrific in it and received an Oscar nomination for best actress losing out to the well placed Mary Pickford and Anita Page. The still is of one of the elaborate for its time musical numbers of girl chorus and the two female stars whose faces are faint. Set against an amazning ornate floral backdrop. Small rubber stamp caption on verso and tiny corner chip to left white margin. Beautiful and fine. . Original Still. Paper. Metro Goldwyn Mayer Paperback
