All the main naval powers are here represented in victory or defeat-Venice Turkey England Spain France Holland Germany Russia Japan and the United States. Illustrated in color and b/w by some of the finest naval artists the world has known. From Wikipedia: "Oliver Martin Wilson Warner 1903-14 August 1976 was a well-known British naval historian and writer.Warner was born in 1903 and educated at Denstone College and Caius College Cambridge. In 1926 he succeeded Frank Swinnerton as staff reader at the publishing house of Chatto and Windus. In addition to his work as staff reader he also wored on the company's advertising material. As a young man he made contributions to magazines such as The Spectator and Time and Tide some of which were later reproduced in his 1947 book Captains and Kings. In 1939 he published an account of his visit to an "unworldly" relative in Canada entitled Uncle Lawrence. 1 During the Second World War he joined the Admiralty secretariat initially serving in the Commission and Warrant C.W. branchcitation needed before serving on the war artists advisory committee. He later served as secretary to the naval honours and awards committee. After the war he became deputy director of publications of the British Council where he remained until his retirement in 1963. he worked thereafter at Chatto and Windus for another year before concentrating on writing. By the time of his death he had more than twenty books in print. He married twice first to Dorothea Blanchard who died in 1937 by whom he had one daughter. He was married secondly to Elizabeth Strahan with whom he had one son and one daughter. Warner died at his home Old Manor Cottage Haslemere on 14 August 1976. A memorial service was held on 21 October Trafalgar Day at St. Lawrence Jewry-next-Guildhall church. The gilt facsimile signature on the front board is presumably that of a former owner but we have not succeeded in deciphering the signature. Large 4to 12 1/4 x 10 inches pages: xxi:503. Publisher's full maroon morocco blocked in gilt all edges gilt a little rubbed indent in backstrip.The subscriber for this volume was C.B.Fry incorrectly listed as C.P.Fry who has presented the volume to Walter R. Hammond. The calligraphic inscription on the front flyleaf reading "To Walter R. Hammond on his 24th Birthday June 19th 1927 from C.P.F with sincere regards & good wishes" The caligrapher repeating the C.P.F error. Unfortunately a 4 inch diagonal tear into the blank lower margin of this leaf has been repaired by a lunatic with sellotape with the resultant staining. However this tear is 2 1/2 inches away from the inscription. A very nice association copy with two of the great names of British cricket: C.B.Fry 1872-1956 & Walter Reginald "Wally" Hammond 1903-1965. With a newspaper cutting reporting the auction sale of Hammond's trophies & books after his death. This volume is mentioned as being the most expensive of the book lots. Weight 4.275 kg thus extra overses postage will be requested London: London & Counties Press Association, 1912 unknown
