"A waterway sixteen hundred miles long from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico nowhere less than twenty feet deep at all stages is discussed in the following series of papers recently submitted to the Western Society of Engineers. Projects and estimates are given for the several sections of the route by men who have spent the better part of their lives in especially qualifying themselves to treat the problems involved in such an undertaking. That such a waterway can actually be produced and at reasonable cost is a question for primary consideration. The Legislative Committee of the Illinois River Valley Association in the line of its duty to the residents of the Illinois Valley and the country at large undertakes a wider circulation of this important series of papers for the benefit of those who have given little direct study to the problems and are concerned in shaping public sentiment. London: The South Western Road Club 1947-80 Original club publications with printed card wrappers. Annual end of season club dinners where prizes were presented with speeches often with guest speakers from other clubs. The publications usually included details of the speakers menu and some club events details. This material came from the archives of Will Townsend who was a leading figure in British club cycle racing head of the Road Time Trials Council in the 1950s and of Westerley Road Club. He had an important role in the post-war reconciliation between time trialists and road racers in Britain. He was often a guest speaker at other cycling club annual dinners as here withThe South Western Road Club. The material here: 1. Annual Dinner 1947 .Cream folded card lettered in blue on 4 sides including prizes lists for club events. 2. Annual Reunion Feb. 1948. Cream folded card lettered in blue. One of the guest speakers was Will Townsend and two items are enclosed loosely: a typescript of his speech and a two page manuscript letter to Will Townsend from Bill Read on club stationery giving a history of the club. 3. Reunion Dinner. 1949. Folded white card lettered in blue. 4. 21st Annual Reunion 1951. White folded card lettered in blue with club colour ribbon threaded at spine; Will Townsend was again guest speaker and loosely enclosed are a TS of his speech his invitation card and another 2 page letter from Bill Read to him. 5. Annual Reunion 1952. White folded card. 6. Annual Reunion. 1953. White folded card. 7. SWRC Newsletter Christmas 1962. Stapled foolscap sheets 15pp. 8. Silver Jubilee Reunion 1956. Cream folded card with decorative printed edges and blue ribbon through spine and printed paper pages. Will Townsend was again a speaker and the TS of his speech is again enclosed loosely. 9. Annual Reunion. 1957. Blue folded card. 10. Annual Reunion Feb. 1975. White folded card with reproduction of Frank Patterson drawing to front; enclosed loosely is a folded typescript stapled of club awards in 1974. 11. Golden Jubilee dinner Feb. 1980. White folded card larger size lettered in black and gold with tiiped-in reproduction of Patterson drawing to inside. Will Townsend was main proposer to the Club and a TS of his speech is again enclosed loosely as well as xeroxed shhets of club records and a thick card souvenir of club presidents in the form of a printed wheel with the club badge to centre. Condition details: Very Good generally. Occasional light browning; the newsletter has some fraying to edges and is folded and the souvenir card from 1980 has also been folded and is browned. Lacks the CD which accompanied the booklet. According to a report presented to the church in 1996 by architect Michael Bester it was emphasised that 'the St Paul's Churchyard is. a most important collection of some of the earliest and most interesting examples of Anglican funerary architecture in South Africa. It is certainly one of the oldest such graveyards still extant.' There is an alphabetical list of names and a detailed section on the transcripts with photographs. An old plan of the graveyard is found at the rear. 1st Edition. Condition: Very good. No dust jacket. Binding: Softcover. Illustrated card wraps with very light edge-wear and rubbing.
